fox's laura ingle is following the tragedy on the hudson. . >> reporter: on a sunny saturday afternoon on the west side of manhattan, horror. r d-aiico sillvontal mid-air co the hudson river. an eyewitness capturing these exclusive photos seconds before a small plane and tourist helicopter crashed. >> in one of the later pictures, a propeller is coming apart on the helicopter. >> reporter: the chopper was carrying five italian tourists and a pilot. another three people on board the small piper aircraft including a child. officials do not believe any of the nine survived the crash. >> this has changed from a rescue to recovery mission. that probably was what we could have started out with, the instant it happened. >> reporter: the crash scattering debris over the hudson. some describe the collision as sounding like a quick roll of thunder followed by an eerie silence. >> we saw the plane hit the tail of the helicopter. the copter started spiraling and went straight down. >> a massive rescue search following the collision. it continues as divers hope to recover the wreckage. federal inve

fox 5 news' laura ingle has more. >> reporter: investigators working at the site over the hudson river. they recovered several bodies and wreck from what is believed to be the helicopter. >> there are obligations that pilots have, all of them, to be aware of traffic around them. and so we're going to be looking at that, any radio transmissions or communications. >> reporter: the helicopter was carrying five tourists and a pilot when it collided with a ngle engine plane, carrying three people. the new york mayor issued sympathies to the family. >> our prayers t rayers for the five italian tourists that died, as well as the nine people. >> reporter: these showed the aftermath, another chopper pilot radioing the helicopter pilot before the collision but the warning was too late. both choppers in the hudson, quickly sinking. they're looking for a cause. >> the camera, the photos, all helping to establish a placement, area of the crash. all of that is part of the investigation. >> reporter: thousands were out along the banks of the hudson on the new york and new jersey sides when the situat

watching the recovery efforts for the last several hours is our own laura ingle on the new jersey side in hoboken. laura, set the scene for us, what have you learned and what have you seen. >> reporter: right now we have been watching officials gather at a waterfront restaurant here along the shoreline and i want to show you three different things. we saw the press conference. you see a large group of people. there is at the outside of that waterfront restaurant. governor of new jersey governor announced there will be a 6:15 press conference. there is the possibility that n.t.s.b. will be here for that. we are expecting to get more news at that time, official news. the rest we can do is eyeball it from the shore. jim is going to pan around out to the debris scene that you have been watching live. you can see that the new york police boat, the main boat with the bright orange buoy that marks the scene of the crash. there has been little small rafts going around this area circling with divers all day long. they seem to have slowed down. they have been in and out of water. that activity a

laura ingle is live. it's hot, humid. what happens in our fabulous city today? >> there was a lot of excitement today because many of the city's main thoroughfares were shut down to normal street traffic so that bike riders could really sort of have their way with the streets and it's a way for the city to encourage bike riders to ditch their cars, get out there on their bikes and see all the brand-new bike lanes that have been put in over the last three years. we are talking about 200 additional miles of bike lanes that have been added all over meat. so park avenue was closed, streets around the brooklyn bridge up to central park were closed to encourage people to see exactly what the city has done, remind the residents of new york city that there are safe bike lanes to use and really promote the idea of cheaper transportation, getting cleaner air into the city and it never hurts to get the additional exercise. one of many programs the city has been trying to do to encourage people to get out there. >> not a day goes by when i don't see a bicyclist almost getti

laura ingle has the latest details. >> the murders of 18-year-old and 19-year-old has rocked the virginia tech community. it's already been hit so hard with tragedy. locals describe the park where the couple were murdered as a peaceful serene place that is very popular for students looking for a quick getaway. they were a couple who had been described as honest, church going students who were role models. they believe the two were hanging out when they were shot what appears to be a random act of violence. >> they came here to park and were sitting there probably talking. >> it's shocking, it's disturbing, just to summarize it in one word, it's brutal. quite honestly it's brutal. >> reporter: the bodies were discovered by a man walking his dog in the morning. police continue to search for clues. cops tell us there still have not been any breaks in the case. nearby residents reportedly did not hear any gunshots. we heard there they were shot on wednesday night or thursday morning. no weapon was found at the scene. right now the public is being asked to come forward if they have any informa

laura ingle is in new jersey and joins us live with the latest on the recovery effort. >> we are getting word that the search for the small plane that has been going on all day long and they have found the small aircraft just a little north of where we witnessed the helicopter coming out, at least part of it a short time ago. we had dramatic type tape of when the dievsz found the plane using a large crane off a huge boat. they were able to get that crane into the water, use almost like a fishing line going down. hooking it around the fuselage of the helicopter and bringing it up. just before earlier today we witnessed from the shore at least two bodies being pulled from the water. loaded into a metal wire basket and brought aboard the main search boat. we are waiting for this press conference. n.t.s.b. is held us off all day long to give us official confirmation of the bodies. we know they are gathering facts talking with other investigators. they are all gathering and expected to give us an update within the hour. >> we understand the victims' family members have been called to the medi

laura ingle has the latest on the health clinic influx. , laura, it sounds like people might not be able to get everything they need. is that what you found? >> well, what we're finding here, jamie, is that the record unemployment numbers translates to a growing population without health insurance. officials estimate that up to 8 million patients will head to a free clinic this year, a large group of them will be people who had a job a year ago and never thought they would be in a position to need this type of free service. now, the medical centers are privately run and receive little federal state funding if any. they're run solely by volunteers, but as millions turn to the free clinics, there's a new problem. funding has dropped dramatically, approximately 2 20%. >> free clinics rely on community support. we are the communities answers to the health care needs. so, we received very little state or frl funding. we rely on grants, foundations supports and obviously, community donations. >> now, not everyone can use these centers though. in

laura ingle has been following this story. she went over to the new jersey side in hoboken which is closest to where the collision took place. you are on the phone right now. i understand you have fo new information. >> we do. we are witnessing as you are seeing all the different rescue craft in the hudson river. we have been watching this for several hours. you see the blue boats and red bolts with the fire department and the gray boats are the new jersey state police. we've been watching these motorized rafts go back and forth with scuba divers between boats and the shore. in just the last few seconds, we saw one of these rafts pull up to another raft holding what can only be described as a rescue basket, a stretcher. we are seeing it go into the water. they are working and back in the boat now. i'm not sure what that means. we can assume it's possible bli the remains of the one of the victims or something of significance as far as evidence is concerned and the wreckage of one of these two craft. you heard live here on fox m

laura ingle is live in our new york bureau right now. here is a question that many people are asking, how do these free clinics first of all work and how can things like physical exams, x-rays and even prescription medicine be free? >> a whole lot of questions. these medical centers are privately run. they do not receive funding. most don't from any federal or state funds. they are run by volunteers and we're talking about doctors, nurses, physician assistants, all donate their time and energy. we are talking about medical exams, x-rays, chronic illness checks, and prescription drugs, all things that can really add up. so these clinics by and large really have to rely on community support. overall, funding right now is down 20% across america, while there has been an increase in patient load by up to 50%. it's a big gap that really needs a lot of attention. >> these services are valuable. can anyone go in and use the services? >> wouldn't it be great if everyone could get free medical care? no, there are stipulations and qualifications t

laura ingle has more.e newsroom. >> only a third of the vaccine they had been expecting since october is likely to arrive by then and the potential for new wave of infections is expected as the school season approaches. there has been debate in the federal government on how to proceed in the campaign to get americans to be vaccinated for the h1n1 virus. the vaccine now may not be effective for everyone. then the money issue, cost involve with massive campaign to get half of americans vaccinated in months could go through the roof. close to $2 billion has been spent so far to buy up to 195 million doses of vaccine. one of the main fears in this is the h1n1 virus which first popped up in u.s., mexico and april might change and spread, which would make the vaccination useless. >> the virus may mutate and the vaccine they are making for delivery in april may not even work against the mutated swine flu. the main thing to remember is that it's a relatively benign infection for most people. >> okay. there is also

we have laura ingle on her way there and we will be talking to jon scott, a pilot.ilot we talked to earlier talked about the fact that in this airspace, it can get very crowded. i have been watching the pictures on a number of different sources and i'm seeing a lot of news helicopters and such flying around, and that passageway with buildings on both sides is not all that wide. are you getting the sense -- as we're looking right now, you can see there is a helicopter, i believe, or it might be a small plane. >> there are at least three helicopters in the area right now, not including plane traffic further out west that i think is going to newark. i'm a half block from the river. i think you gave an accurate assessment. there is small plane traffic going up the hudson and three metropolitan airports, la guardia, kennedy and liberty international. there is a lot of traffic. there is a lot of small air traffic. then again, there are a lot of sightseeing helicopters. >> we're watching another one go by. i'm curious whether or not these are police helicopters that are br

laura ingle is live with that story. >> this will be the first semester that colleges and universitye veterans funding from the new bill, the post 9-11 g.i. bill went into effect this month and they're waiting with open arms for soldiers to make a flood transition. we took our cameras to rutgers university to check out the special things that college campuses are strengthening services providing to the vets. there are orientations, websites and mentoring programs in many schools. the new post 9/11 g.i. bill will pay for tuition and fees for men and women who served the country. and while the former g.i. bill covered expenses for vets, the new bill significantly increases the amount of money that vets will have access to, along with covering the cost of textbooks and monthly housing allowances and in many cases vets will be able to go to college for free. >> for me it takes a tremendous financial burden off me, for many veterans it provides them with a college education they wouldn't be able to get without the bill. so it's changing a lot of lives, absolutely. and you're giving one so
