leigh ann, let me start with you as we try to figure out collectively, and i know we've been going back and forth with this among ourselves all day trying to report out what happens next in the senate. mcconnell put out that timeline -- or at least, i'm sorry, we have come to expect that if, in fact, we go along with the timeline that mitch mcconnell has set that the trial could actually start an hour after joe biden is sworn in, but it is up to democrats to a certain extent as to whether it happens that way. what are you hearing? >> reporter: it is, kasie. so it's not up to the majority leader, which is going to be mcconnell for another week or so, or the minority leader, schumer, who is going to also take over the majority at some point next week. that's another factor that we don't quite know yet either. depends on when the two georgia senators, democrats, are seated, giving schumer the majority. but it's not up to them individually. they have to come to an agreement on what this trial would look like, how long it could last, when it's going to start, and we are told by the schumer o

leigh ann caldwell is posted up on capitol hill. kelly o'donnell is at the ellipse next to the white house. historic win for reverend warnock. everybody looking at the race between david perdue and jon ossoff. it's going to control which party controls the senate given kamala harris' role that will be the tie-breaking vote as vice president-elect. we've been waiting for critical votes to come in. where does that stand? >> still waiting on the vote. the setup for this looks pretty clear-cut. jon ossoff, the democrat, has a lead of 17,000 votes. what we're waiting on is some counties in georgia still have mail-in ballots, vote-by-mail ballots to be reported out. for instance, right here in the atlanta and immediate atlanta area there are about 30,000 of them across these full counties, about 30,000 we think mail ballots that they have to tabulate and report out. but mail ballots in the atlanta metro area in particular, a very democratic area, vote-by-mail bol lots tend to be democratic. i think it's very reasonable to expect ossoff wi

leigh ann caldwell on capitol hill. thanks to both of you. >>> let's turn to jason crow of colorado. congressman, in addition to being a congressman, former army ranger. he served as an impeachment manager at president trump's first senate trial in january. january 2020, of course, which seems like six years ago. congressman, you know the pressure and the preparation that goes into being an impeachment manager. this is a totally different ball game. president days from leaving office. this was the most bipartisan effort for impeachment ever. how does that change the environment for the managers this time around? >> we need to keep this short. we need to stick to the facts. probably the biggest difference is we have to provide context. i think we have to talk about the events leading up to in the months and years that led to last wednesday. once the 6th didn't come out of nowhere. there was a context surrounding it. it has been building for a while. the most important task the managers are to provide that context. what d

i'm bringing in leigh ann caldwell on capitol hill, what is the plan for the next 48 hours, what is this impeachment hearing going to look like? >> well, stephanie, this is the day that the house of representatives officially goes on the record on where they stand regarding the president and his role in the january 6 insurrection. today their going to vote -- tonight i should say they're going to vote on the 25th amendment resolution which calls on vice president mike pence to invoke the 25th amendment and then tomorrow, regardless of what pence does, they're going to bring up an article of impeachment, one article of incitement for insurrection. that is the charge against the president. now, the coast -- there's 213 democratic co-sponsors already on that article of impeachment. the author of that co-sponsor tells me that they already have a majority of the house who is willing to vote for it. so it is expected to pass. the question is, is how many republicans are going to vote for it? my sources say that there definitely are going to be -- they don't know if there's going to be a half a

leigh ann, good morning to you. we have -- it was already going to be quite a week before we heard the president explicitly on tape asking the georgia secretary of state to overturn this election. and the reality is, there are a bunch of republicans in congress who are willing to, basically, back up that assertion and challenge these electoral college results. i want to remind all of our viewers that part of why we're dividing people into house and senate is just because you need one from each chamber to force this on-the-record vote here. that's why what josh hawley did was so incredibly significant, why what these other senators may do is significant. but what i am struck by is just how this divide has exploded in the republican party to the point where you literally have people like ben sasse and mitt romney saying to their own colleagues, this is antidemocratic, unconstitutional, and not where we -- it's bad for the country, is the phrase that ben sasse used. what's your reporting say right now about what's goin

let's check in with leigh ann caldwell on capitol hill. if you could reset a bit. we know we are 30 minutes away from the vote on this rule which if it somehow went another way would somehow table the actual vote on impeachment. we don't expect that. walk us through what we should expect over the next approximately four hours. >> reporter: sure, chuck. so, yeah, there's about 30 to 50 minutes left of debate on this rule. they will vote on this rule and it is expected to proceed, for them to accept the rule is a more layman's way to say it, i guess. after that then they are going to start the official debate on this article of impeachment. it's only going to be a couple hours of debate so it's not going to be very long. you know, what we're trying to figure out now is what the senate is going to do should the house pass this article of impeachment which we fully expect it to. i just heard from senate democratic leader hoyer who told me that they plan to send these -- this article of impeachment to the senate immediately. there was some discussion earlier in the week

and leigh ann caldwell is joining us from capitol hill. so let's get a look at what is happening right now. >> reporter: right now the 117th congress has officially started. what is happening in the senate, they are doing the normal process where 32 members who were just reelected or won their re-elections will be sworn in throughout the day. but most of the action today is ee over in the house where all of the members will be sworn in. and house speaker nancy pelosi will have the slimmest majority that speak has se she has seen and she also has to win today her vote for speaker where she will need a majority of members present and voting voting for her. look at this slim majority she has. 222 members to 211 republicans. so that means that there are over a dozen democrats who have been voting by plproxy since ma. and also those quarantining for covid will be voting for speaker pelosi in what will be a very, very close election for her. but she says that she is confident. she just put out a note to her members today saying that she is confi

joining me now to explain all of this, capitol hill correspondent leigh ann caldwell, and phil rucker, and kristen welker. where do we stand on this senate trial, 17 republicans, any shot they're going to get them? >> there's one thing mcconnell has been extremely clear on, a senate process trial will not start before january 19th. but let's look at the calendar here, that's next tuesday, wednesday the 20th is inauguration day, nothing is going to happen in the senate as far as an impeachment trial on that day. let's move to the 21st, around the 21st, give or take or day or two the new majority leader is going to be chuck schumer, the democratic leader so the process is largely going to fall under his hands and it's going to be up to him and what happens. but mcconnell still matters here and the reason is is because it needs two-thirds of senators to convict the president. and so if all democrats support it still needs 17 senators, and if, like you said, if mcconnell comes out as for conviction, then he could bring a lot with him. but that's the one thing he has not been clear on whic
