welcome to you both. >> good to see you, rosemary. >> so, let's start with liz cheney's loss in the wyoming gop primary. not a surprise outcome, of course, by any stretch of the imagination, given cheney's bold stand against donald trump in a state that's very pro trump. the big question now, of course, did cheney receive enough support to give her the credibility she needs to confront trump, and keep him out of office, as she has vowed to do, and how much he do that? charlie, do you first. >> rosemary, first, we have to be very clear about something. donald trump has invaded a number of primaries throughout the country. not only in wyoming, but in states, swing states like pennsylvania, arizona, georgia, the and the president, he has helped nominate some candidates, many of whom are unelectable or unfit. so, okay, winning a primary is one. think about winning a general election in a swing state is quite another. so, republicans underperform in the general election in the fall. i think donald trump will receive a lot of backlash for this. i think that will help liz cheney's case. because ri

i think there's a long future for liz cheney. rprising, you mentioned earlier, to see a cheney not win a republican primary in wyoming. it's shocking. 30 years in my business, i never thought i would say those words. >> i know. her mom and dad wrote a book about congress from the perspective of he was a republican congress member. they wrote a book about the institution itself. robert gibbs, you campaigned against sarah palin when she was running for vice president. you were on the obama team. what do you make of the prospect of sarah palin being in the u.s. house? >> well, i mean, it's a far cry from what i think we expected when we watched it all unfold in 2008. i think you see in that clip that was shown right there, the real rap on sarah palin is she's not alaska, she's everywhere else. i think we watched from the governorship and then embarking on kind of a reality tv career. i think it's going to work against her. now she's spent a lot of time trying to convince alaskans that she wants to represent them. i think it's going t

tonight after an appeal primary battle to keep her congressional seat in wyoming, congresswoman liz cheney conceded with just 62% of the vote in. she had already lost too much ground tour challenger, a trump backed cheney critic harriet hageman. hageman has more than 63% of the current total vote total. cheney conceded with less than 33%. it is enough another rough night for republicans who have stood out to donald trump, and there's one person in american politics who knows and understands what it's like to be in liz cheney's position. that is congressman adam kinzinger from illinois, former member of the january six committee. i talked to him earlier about how his friend and his colleague was approaching this day. >> congressman king kinzinger thank you so much for being with us tonight. i want to start with i wish we were meeting under better circumstances given where the polls have been trending concerning cheney's fate. i want to ask you as one of the few people who've been going through this with her inside the same party, what has it been like being on the committee with liz cheney.

this woman, liz cheney, is the incumbent. president, she's facing a major challenge from harriet haagerman, a political newcomer and trump—backed candidate. so far, potential candidates, like those in south carolina, washington state and michigan, who've been openly critical of donald trump, have had huge trouble winning republican primary races. our north america correspondent, john sudworth, has been speaking with voters across the state of wyoming. at wyoming's junior rodeo finals... ..some children don't stay on for long. a fitting metaphor, perhaps, for the state's republican congresswoman liz cheney and her hard fall from grace. for the most part the state of wyoming is very big trump supporters. so when she goes against the masses it doesn't work good for us. for hours, donald trump chose not to answer the pleas from congress. liz cheney is one of only two republicans to have joined the committee investigating donald trump's attempts to cling to power. the people of wyoming are going to tell her, "liz, you're fired, ge

liz cheney's had the courage to speak out to, tell the truth, we are dissent audacity to tell the truth, and there's just no place for that in donald trump's gop. a sad result. we certainly hoped that at some point the fever breaks, but the fever is not broken. donald trump still has an iron grip of in the republican party. >> congressman schiff, surely you understand if liz cheney begins to speak with a concession speech, we will go to her. if your committee's business should continue next year into the next congress, you now know that liz cheney will not be a member of that committee. what would that mean to the committee? >> well, her loss will be very considerable. it is our goal to finish our work the session. we intend to have more hearings in the fall, we intend to produce our report and our recommendations into as much as we can to act on those recommendations, but whether the committee continues or doesn't continue in her absence, it's a loss to the institution to have someone who i think is a true conservative, representative what the gop used to care about and believe in. but

figuring out how to run for office. >> there may not be enough republican primary voters to sustain liz cheney but to your point there may be enough interviews to sustain ms. cheney. she will be on a major national network this morning at 7:00 a.m. this is part of the plan is to try to just generate as much attention over time for yourself as you can and see if it eventually turns into something. i'm dubious that it will, but i'm not dubious of the idea that she could -- she is going to continue to be talked about, you know. her coverage will far outkick her vote share in the polling for the next couple of years. >> as you talked about, i mean, her cause is an important one, right? this idea that america son the brink, she likened it to the civil war, some historians do the same thing, this idea that the biggest threat to america is an internal one, this internal conflict that we see now. listen, i think that cause and that sort of language she is not only singular in her party, she's sort of singular on the national stage in terms of saying, listen, americans, this is an urge nt fight and all

listen, i'm a huge liz cheney fan. i wrote a book in 2001 and i predicted she would run for president. i didn't think it would play out this way. i don't know what her plans are. i don't think an independent can be elected president in america. it's just not possible now. i think that her choices to have an impact in the election are varied. ultimately we forget that politics is hugely a game of very small numbers and a few numbers in a few key states can make a difference. trump won by 40 something votes if you look at exact right precincts. i think also liz cheney is out there reminding americans, but particularly reminding the republican party what it is to be an american. to be an american you have to exist in a system in which you believe both sides can have merritt and if the other side wins you are willing to lose. that's the essence of it. and that's the difference between us and what happens in russia. us and what is now happening in hungary where they have sort of a faux free election system. that's what repu
