. >> i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. it is early, 4:30 right now. first, let's talk about changing temperatures today. >> it's going to be so much colder. it's going to come in with some gusty winds. we're going to see high winds and waves, as well as those temperatures dropping. now, we're also going to see cold temperatures continue for tomorrow with even a chance of showers and snow on some of our bay area hills. and then for the rest of the week we have off and on rain and very chilly temperatures. but it is a mild start for some. in san rafael it's 51 degrees, but you compare that to the 37 we have in gilroy. so in spots where the wind is starting to pick up, those temperatures are already warmer and today we're headed for the upper 50s and low 60s and that's about a 10 degree drop in some spots compared to yesterday. we'll have more on this in the forecast in just a few minutes. vianey, how is it looking? >> i haven't had to uds my car heater for a while. but it looks like i will this week. it's already very busy on the san mateo bridge. i hav

. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get a look at the roads. certainly busy this morning already. >> a couple big ones. >> we wanted to start with the forecast. another cold start to the morning. >> it is cold around the bay area, a frost advisory in effect until 9:00 for all of these areas shaded this blue. we'll continue to see temperatures dipping another few degrees and we've seen more of these cold mornings as we are right now at 31 degrees in dublin. so we have made it below freezing there. it is 37 right now in napa, 31 in santa rosa and mountain view at 33 degrees. as we zoom into the south bay, we can see high temperatures are headed for the low 60s. this will be one of the warmer days of the week before we get ready for more clouds and eventually some rain. >>> and, mike, you're starting with a traffic alert in oakland. >> yeah, there's slowing on the approach north on 880 heading up toward the 980 split. 980 is where folks are being diverted because for the next 30 minutes chp will have to work on opening lanes. there was an earlier

. >> i'm marcus washington. of course we're talking about the weather and we've got to talk about the roads. that rain, how is it -- >> it's starting to move back into the north bay. it's starting earlier there and will make its way across the rest of the bay area throughout the next several hours. it is an early start for people heading out in parts of marin and sonoma counties, as stormranger tracks what's right now light showers moving in. we are also going to see some heavier rain through the late morning hours. pretty much a steady rain across marin, up to petaluma. and then we'll see this once again pushing across much of the rest of the bay area over the next few hours. this is another storm system coming in with cold temperatures, and we're also going to see off and on rain, especially throughout the morning, and there's still that chance that we could see, as you go up in higher elevations around the bay area, it changing over to snow. most of us seeing rain in the valleys and breezy winds and there wil

i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. such a busy monday morning.e breaking stories in just a moment. let's start out with a look at the forecast. over the weekend it felt like a touch of bring. >> it was nice. it was nice and warm. that actually continues into today as well. a chilly start as you get ready to head out the door, with some upper 30s in the south county, as well as the tri-valley, as well as 36 degrees right now in santa rosa, 46 in san rafael. as we go into today, our temperatures make it back into what we had yesterday and the day before, upper 60s, and even reaching 71 degrees in santa rosa. in oakland, look for a high of 68 degrees and 68 in fremont. and livermore reaching 68 degrees. then tomorrow it drops about 10 degrees across the bay area. that coming along with some high winds. that's going to make it feel a lot colder. and then even colder on wednesday, as we only reach into 50 degrees for the middle of the week. we'll talk more about this blast of cold air coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. >>> 6:00 right now,

i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. we will get a look at the forecast this morning, but mike is following breaking news. big problems out there. >> contra costa, 680 is a nightmare. this is the worst part of my job when i report somebody was killed on the roadway. it happened just before 4:30 this morning. still closed is most of 680. this is a caltrans camera showing you right around monument. you look at the traffic. they did reopen two lanes early on in the incident but the coroner is still not on scene and the coroner must arrive to complete the investigation, and then they can get permission to clear the lanes. the better news is that kirker pass road is a good alternate. the bay bridge toll plaza just had metering lights turned on. >>> we have freeze warnings in effect for the areas in purple and parts of the north bay, and also a freeze watch for other areas. we have already seen temperatures much colder than the past few mornings, and even well below freezing for santa rosa right now. 29 in fairfield. it's 32 i

i'm marcus washington.uspect in the half moon bay shooting rampage scheduled back in court. >> reporter: the suspect in the half moon bay shooting last month will be back in court here at superior court in redwood city for a hearing on a motion. this hearing to take place later this morning. chunli zhao is the man accused of shooting and killing seven people at two mushroom farms last month in half moon bay and injuring an eighth person. next thursday he is scheduled to enter a plea to several charges, including murder. zhao admitted in a jailhouse interview that he committed those fating shootings and drove to the sheriff's substation to surrender. >> reporter: i'm kris sanchez in sunset district where investigators are trying to figure outer which happened first, a deadly fire or explosion that killed one woman. one firefighter also injured. we know five homes are uninhabitable, one is destroyed and two more are red tagged. >>> we're starting out clear across the bay area with chilly temperatures and it l

i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we're going to check the commute, but the temperatures, we need them to pick up. it's a cold start. >> another cold start. we've had a lot of mornings starting out in the mid to upper 30s and it does continue. take a look at some of these numbers. in santa rosa we are freezing, 32 degrees. that's the coldest spot on this map with the temperature now at 34 in fairfield, 43 in hayward. we're seeing temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s down into the south bay as well. as you're getting ready for work in fremont, you do need the layers for the start of the day, but the afternoon is going to shape up to be nice. low 60s for early in the afternoon. we are watching a crash, mike. what's the update? >> highway 4 is slow coming into concord. there's a little update, first there was one crash, now there are two separate locations. for chicago highway, the split to 242 and highway 4, so both spots are showing a distraction and slowing coming into the area. they need a number of tow trucks.

i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. busy morning. we'll check the monday morning commute, but what about the forecast? >> we've got a lot of changes, too. we had such a nice and warm weekend. well, in a couple of days we're going back to winter. it's going to start to pick up today and become windy and some of those gusts, especially near the coastline, could reach 50 miles per hour. and our temperatures will drop as we return to winter starting tomorrow especially, and the week ahead we'll have freezing mornings and cool and sunny days. we're very close to freezing in some spots in the inland valleys. we're at 36 degrees in dublin, 35 in santa rosa, and it's 45 in napa where the winds are starting to increase just a little bit more. our high temperature heads for 66 degrees, 64 in san jose, as well as 64 in livermore and dublin. >>> mike, you've been watching the road and the backup at the bay bridge. >> i can see how many headlights are backed up because there's fog and that may cause folks to be a little slower down the curve and

. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get you started with a look at the commute in just a bit. but first we've got to talk about that cold weather. you said to bundle up and we bundled up. >>> you do have to be prepared and that's all we're trying to do here, deliver a little bit of bad news for you this morning. it is very cold and we're also seeing freezing temperatures in some of our inland valleys where we have the purple shading, temperatures are lower, you don't have as much wind. temperatures are dropping. right now it's 38 degrees in morgan hill, it's 37 in fremont, 38 in mountain view. we are at 28 degrees in santa rosa. yesterday it was quite breezy, today not as windy and our temperatures are coming up a few degrees but it's still going to be a cold day even for mid-february. we're going to talk about a slight warming trend in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. >>> mike, you've been watching several trouble spots around the bay. >> we're talking about the wednesday commute, so as you say,

. >> i am marcus washington. we will look at the commute in a minute, but first let's look at the forecast for you. >> we are seeing temperatures in parts of the north bay as part of the tri-valley dipping into the mid-30s. it's cold there, and san francisco starting out the morning at 48 degrees. we do need the layers through the start of the day, but look at this afternoon. this will be the warmest day of the week as we head for 68 degrees in fremont. 69 in san josÉ. low 70s for morgan hill and san martin. for the north bay, mid to upper 60s. we will talk about big changes for the weekend. that's coming up. so far it looks like a smooth commute. >>> focusing on the bay bridge, from the east bay across i-80, no delays. no problems with the toll plaza. getting to that area, also a nice drive through alameda county and the maze. we do have a disabled vehicle west highway 4 around the 242 interchange. it should be in the center divide, and there's debris so watch for that. we do have northbound 680 with the overnig

i'm marcus washington.ate weather alert and it's been quite the morning weather-wise here in the bay area. real quick, a new tweet from chp, drivers are being told to avoid patterson pass road in east livermore due to the weather conditions. right now there's a hard closure in both directions. and a similar problem right now for drivers on highway 17. let's go to nbc bay area's kris sanchez right now. what's the latest with the closure? >> reporter: i just talked to chp officer out here, we have hard closures not only on highway 17, but also highway 9, highway 35, he says, about 20 trees are down, about 20 vehicles are stuck on the roadway. i want to show you this brand new video we got of a driver who was stuck on bear creek road since about 4:00 this morning. the only way she was able to get out is because someone was able to use some boards to kind of get her out. and that is in a toyota four-runner, meant for these conditions. if you don't have to drive, the chp says stay off the roads. >>> so sloppy ou

i'm marcus washington.ing at an unprecedented rate, but first the hunt for a man who fired a gun inside a san francisco synagogue. >> reporter: i'm kris sanchez. san francisco police and the fbi are searching for the gunman who fired shots inside a synagogue. we have new images of the man they say shot the gun in the richmond district. this is surveillance video as it happened about 7:20 wednesday night as russian jews were gathered to play. the rabbi says he feels they were targeted because the gunman said something about the israeli intelligence agency. san francisco police say the bullets were blanks, but what the gunman did was still a crime and they're investigating whether he's the same person that brandished a gun at a nearby theatre. >> i'm scott mcgrew. we got the monthly jobs report this morning and it was blockbuster. more than a half million jobs were added in the month of january and that's about three times what economists were expecting. unemployment rate falls to 3.4%, the lowest in 60 years

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from the scene. i know you've been out there since right after this broke. what is the latest, bob? >> reporter: you can see behind me, two investigators actually just went inside the home with redwood city fire department. they're trying to figure out what caused this fire. you can see the insulation from the attic that was pulled out. the elderly man who lived here is in the hospital being treated for life-threatening burns and possible smoke inhalation. he lived here with four other people at this house, which is actually an eldercare home. it's located on cypress street, a neighborhood not far from highway 84 and the el camino real. this fire started around 3:00. the fire department had to call for a second alarm, for extra help. the two caregivers and two other elderly people did get out okay, but when th
