william lee is buried at mount vernon. we have no idea where. there was no gravestone mark or no record of position. so it's a shame. we have an african-american burial ground where we have a memorial to the enslaved people who worked at mount vernon. the first one was created in actually 1929, very early at a time when these kinds of stories weren't readily told. and really it was the leadership of one member of the board, one of the vice regents, one of the ladies of the mount vernon ladies association that made that happen. now, that memorial stone was placed in an area that had traditionally been known as a place where formally enslaved people were buried and known as the slave burial ground. so we know a lot of formally enslaved people at mt. vernon were buried there and we were doing archeological work to study and understand that burial ground. we don't actually dig into the tombs. we reveal the tops or show where the shafts are so we're able to document the number of shafts and their orientation as a way to better understand that place. all of our visitors are welcomed to go there and read about it and learn
