good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. san jose police say this couple was just minding their own business walking down the street when they were confronted by a group of suspected gang members. the man tried to help the woman. he ended up being attacked. both the man and woman ended up being taken to the hospital. as you said, this came the very same weekend when san jose police rolled out their new gang suppression program. the couple was on lido street yesterday afternoon in broad daylight and an argument started with these suspected gang members. police say they took the woman's purse and when the man tried to help her, they attacked him and he suffered a head injury in all this. the attackers took off running. this weekend san jose police started rolling out a three-phase plan for increased patrols in june and july and then a gang suppression unit that will start in august. >> i think any time you increase or improve visibility, you're going to always see some deter rens to crime. i think how that's realized is still

good morning to you, jon and marla. three armed men who broke in certainly got more than they bargained for overnight when they got into this home right up elmira. one of them ended up getting shot with his own gun. four people were inside at theñ time including two children who were woken up by all this. fortunately the children were not hurt. the residents at this home on elmira street tell police these three men broke into their home around 2:30 this morning. a man, a woman in their 20s or 30s wereg+yy inside. those kids right nearby as this gunfire broke out. the woman was shot, the man was shot. again, that suspect shot, too. when police arrived they had to sort it all out. here is how the tables turned on the guys who broke in. >> we believe that one of the victims in the house somehow got ahold of the gun and shot the suspect. >> his gun? >> his gun, his own gun. >> reporter: now, i just got off the phone with san francisco police. again, they tell me that the woman suffered life-threatening injuries, the man su

>> reporter: good morning to you, marla. i can tell you that investigators still keep coming to this home on elmira here in the bayview. hard to see. it's way up the street there. flashes are going off on the right-hand side. that's where this home invasion happened around 2:30 this morning. what san francisco police are telling us is that there were four people inside the home, a man, a woman and two children when three men, adult black men broke into the home. a man and a woman were shot inside. the woman has life threatening injuries. the man expected to be okay. there were also two children inside at the time. they were unharmed. initially reports came in that three people we shot inside. that third person shot is believed to be one of the home invasion suspects. he was taken to the hospital along with the other two adults. the children taken as well, more as protective custody. they are at the hospital just sort of procedurally. investigators not exactly sure why this happened, they do think for some reason this home he

good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. this was an awful crime that grabbed national attention. for the first time, we are going to be hearing from the victim who was just 16 years old at the time about what happened that night in 2009. this trial is very different, specially for here in contra county. two different juries are going to be hearing two different opening statements on different days. what that means is that whether 22-year-old jose montano and 20-year-old marcelles peter go on trial, they will be hearing different stories in the beginning. both juries will hear much of the same testimony about what happened that night. prosecutors say the girl, who was drunk and going in and out of consciousness, was beaten and raped by a group of men and teenagers. while at least 20 people watched this attack go on for quite some time in a courtyard of richmond high school after a school dance. the defendants are accused of the same crime but at certain times, evidence will only be admission i belie admissible to one of them

i'm marla tellez. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. happening right now, crews finally starting to get the upper hand on a wildfire burning down in southern california. they have doubled that containment now to 40%. this is happening overnight as cool, moist air finally moving into that area. flames scorched about 46 square miles in the los angeles -- actually angeles national forest, roughly the size of the city of san francisco to give you perspective there. crews have been able to keep it from spreading to the northeastern front. a total of six homes have been destroyed, 15 others have been damaged. santa clara county fire sent 20 firefighters down to southern california trying to help get a handle on these flames. that fire right now just feeding off of the old, dry brush there, some of which hasn't burned in decades. >>> fire crews in the bay area using southern california fire to remind us to clear the brush away from our homes. that way you protect yourself and also your neighbors. nbc bay area kristi smith live in berkeley with

let's check in with marla tellez to find out more. good morning, marla. >> reporter: good morning. in about 4 1/2 hours we'll know if the rumor mill is cranking out the truth about the potential announcement that facebook is set to announce a new video sharing service. as you just mentioned, all the tech experts including our own scott mcgrew says it would be offered through instagram which scott mentioned facebook bought last year for $1 billion. instagram not doing bad at all these days with more than 100 million users. if you don't know, instagram is a photo sharing app that allows users the option of posting their photos to facebook. the thought is instagram will allow users to create short videos and if you so choose, post those to your facebook page. here is the thing, though, you can already post videos to facebook, just not instagram videos. what does this mean for your page? simply put, facebook walls will likely be covered with more videos. it is as simple as that. the thought is facebook is trying to catch up to twitter and its vine service which allows folks to post six

marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> 5:34.estigators trying to figure out what spashed this brushfire in antioch overnight. flames shot up into the air, tore through dry grass. the fire broke out before 11:00 last night near wilbur avenue and minaker drive. crews took an hour to knock down the flames. in all, 15 acres burned. >> we didn't have as much wind as we normally have. weather was cooler made for an easier firefight. it was in a dune area so we had terrain issues sandy soil and significant amount of vegetation. it did burn quite hot. >> no reports of injuries. and it appears no buildings were damaged. >>> happened to be in the south bay you may notice smoke in the area near millpitas. all part of a firefighting exercise. crews including the santa clara county fire department taking part in a live fire exercise at ed levin county park. happening today and tomorrow. the exercise is a culmination of a four-day event. crews will practice using fire as a defensive tool in fighting much larger more dangerous wildfires. >> la

"today in the bay's" marla tellez is live at san jose state. now with new details. >> reporter: good morning. i just hang up the phone with san jose state campus police. they say all the information they are giving out has been sent out to students here in this alert text message that was sent out as soon as this incident was reported last night. it says it happened just before 10:00, 9:50 at duncan hall. after flashing himself, the suspect just took off. all police are saying is this person is a hispanic man in his 20s wearing a white t-shirt and jeans with a teal hat. teal makes many of us think of the san jose sharks. officials cannot confirm if he was, in fact, wearing a san jose sharks hat. officials say they believe this is an isolated incident. they want to remind everyone school is out. so most students are gone right now on summer break. there's about 30,000 students here on campus when school is in attendance. it's unknown if the female who reported the incident is a student. she very well could be an employee because according to san

"today in the bay's" marla tellez just got off the phone with a b.a.r.t.esman and joins us from that b.a.r.t. station. what's b.a.r.t. saying about it? >> reporter: that spokesman tells me that now that 72-hour notice has been given, this means b.a.r.t. is more to an agreement with unions. two unions represent b.a.r.t. workers. he says the next meeting between the two sides is planned for 11:00 this morning to see if they cannot reach a solution today. we will have to wait and see. at issue is salary, pensionof a health care benefits. b.a.r.t. workers want a 23% salary increase over three years and their health care and pension benefits protected. they say they're willing to give a 4% increase over the contract period. b.a.r.t. is asking them to contribute to their pension and pay more for health care benefits. b.a.r.t. workers krefrnltly pay $92 a month for health care. b.a.r.t. employs about 3,000 workers and just to think of the hold over the bay area commute, if they walk off the job come monday morning, some 400,000 people who rely on b.a.r.t. every w
