for the latest, we go to foreign correspondent matt bradley, who is in tel aviv. matt, what's the latest. >> reporter: yeah, reverend, we are hearing that this is a situation that the israeli prime minster has said this is not over. we haven't heard the end of the story but at the same time, it looks as though both sides have declared victory. it's kind of counterintuitive, reverend. when you think about what happened this morning, this burst of violence, really the worst we've seen over the border between israel and lebanon since october 7th. it actually seems, at least for now, and this could change at any time, it seems to have been kind of a bit of a pressure valve that released a little bit of the pressure because, for the past 10 months, we have been seeing increasing strikes over this border and for the past month, ever since the israelis took credit for killing, assassinating a senior hezbollah commander in a -- there's been increasing speculation that hezbollah was going to retaliate with very deadly force against the israelis and then, only a couple of ho

let's go to matt bradley joining us from beirut. matt, welcome.her over israel's border with lebanon overnight. the expectations are this could get much, much worse. what are you hearing? >> reporter: that's right. it is not just about hezbollah in lebanon where im and israel across the border way down south, it is also about iran, which now is very much aligned directly and we heard the iranian president saying he will be retaliating against israel for their killing, the israelis have denied this, a top official while he was the guest of the iranian state a couple days ago. this is a very volatile situation and one that could seek that just hezbollah, not just hamas in the gaza strip but also the houthis in yemen, iran itself and iranian backed groups all becoming engaged in the wider fight that could envelop the entire region. we are talking about an iranian backed so-called axis of resistance. the united states are indeed moving more and more naval and air assets into the region. here is what they said about this just today. >> the pentagon is

we are going first to matt bradley joining us from tel aviv, israel. matt, welcome. what can you tell us about the extent of the strikes and whether they will increase chances of all-out war between israel and hezbollah. >> reporter: alex , this might decrease the chances of a all- out war. and what we didn't see, i know you are asking about the reach of these attacks. they reached not really much further than they have over the last 10 months because remember, as we have been talking about night after night, there's been a lot of fighting over the border between lebanon and israel. it's been dwarfed, particularly in the media come by the fighting in the gaza strip, but they're still been a ferocious battle that's been lasting for the last several months and over the past month, ever since the assassination of -- at top -- in the southern suburbs of beirut, there's been direct threats by has below that they would be retaliating fiercely against the israelis and as you mentioned, matt, it's really been raising concerns across the region that owned not only would there

joining me now from tel aviv is nbc news international correspondent matt bradley.art with the things going on between israel and has blood. -- hezbollah. hezbollah is not hamas. they have a much more sophisticated arsenal, a much better trained troops. they did something today that does not look like it was designed to be the big band that everyone was expecting. >> that's right. everyone was worried this would be sort of the trigger that would break out in international or regionwide war. that this with the sets the entire middle east ablaze. that is not what happened because we didn't see retaliation from iran. we didn't see any civilian casualties. we heard there were two hezbollah fires spiders that were killed. and the idf says there was one israeli soldier killed in this exchange with that's not the kind of thing that would start a regionwide war and what we are talking about here, the pattern of the fighting that we saw just earlier this morning is not appreciably different or not qualitatively different from what we have been seeing for the past 10 months.

we don't know the details for this rescue operation. >> matt bradley in tel aviv.ou so very much. admiral, let's go into this a little bit. what we know, and again, it is just happening a little over an hour ago where we started to get the information in. let's start with the 52-year-old man rescued in southern gaza in the tunnels. what is your interpretation of what that looked like? >> kudos to the israeli defense forces. these kind of operations are very, very difficult. i conducted a couple of them, in fact, josÉ, in an area you and i both know, in columbia, they held hostages and the risk is to the hostage, himself or herself as well as, at matt mentioned, the collateral damage, civilians in the vicinity. that in and of itself makes any rescue attempt very difficult. now let's add the degree of difficulty, 9.9, which is done inside tunnels and closely-guarded areas, and this is a delicate operation. hats off to the israelis. my thought, by the way, this particular hostage is an arab israeli, and it shows israelis will go after all their citizens wherever they

furthermore we have nbc foreign correspondent matt bradley, who joins me now live from tel aviv. it is good to see you. tell us the latest of what you're hearing on the ground. >> reporter: yeah, this is an x- ray operation. you don't hear much about the islamic state or u.s. operations in iraq, but it goes to show it that there is still life fighting there. this was such a situation in which it looked as though it was in the western part which we have heard from several years ago, another blast from the past from the iraq war. that was a very restless province back then. mostly a sunni province, where there was a lot of al qaeda prevalence and a lot of islamic states. this was an operation that was done in partnership with iraqi forces by u.s. troops. and officials from the united states government had told nbc news that about half a dozen u.s. troops were injured, most of them non-life-threatening. but some of them had what could be called, or what they believe could be traumatic brain injuries. so it is unclear exactly whether or not those are very horrible injuries, whether th

nbc's matt bradley is with us from tel aviv. matt, what's the very latest on this?sÉ, the very latest that we just got word from the u.s. state department that they are sanctioning one settler group in the west bank and one settler individual. now, this is not related to the incursions by the israelis into the west bank that as you mentioned have now killed at least nine people and resulted in many injuries, but it does dove tail with that. what we've been talking about for the last couple of months are a lot of settler violence, israelis who have been imposing violence on palestinians who live in the west bank, but that is the latest we're getting from there from washington, but also what's going on in the west bank, this started overnight with air strikes and columns of armored vehicles, bulldozers, tanks moving into the northern part of the west bank, primarily in janine. these were the focal points but there were also other areas that, you know, have seen some incursions by the israelis, including, as i mentioned, armored vehicles, air strikes, hundreds of israe

matt bradley is in beirut, lebanon, for us.hat overnight operation in gaza where they found six hostages? >> reporter: these six hostages, the bodies of those six hostages were found in tunnels beneath the area around khan younis, a city in gaza that has seen several israeli incursions. now we understand that at least five of those six people had been known to have died or had been killed ever since they were captured alive on october 7th. their families knew they had died. now we're hearing from israeli media that there's some possibility that five of those six died because of israeli air strikes. nbc news hasn't been able to verify that quite yet. but this has been repeated in israeli media. >> secretary of state blinken's in doha, wrapped up meetings already this morning in egypt, right, what is he hoping to achieve many this latest round of negotiations with all the parties? >> reporter: that's right, he's about to head to qatar as well, egypt and qatar the two main intermediaries, they're the ones who are speaking to hamas

matt bradley is reporting from beirut.enior iranian officials told reuters only one thing can stop this attack, a ceasefire in gaza. so bring us up to speed on those negotiations. >> chris, that reuters report, there's kind of a glass half full way of looking at it the and the optimistic way of looking at this would say that there is a way out of this, that the iranians could step away trt brink if this negotiated deal goes through and the more pessimistic or realistic way to look at it is these negotiations are unlikely to work and they've been going on since november and they've not succeeded despite the enormous amount of diplomatic energy that the u.s. and other intermediaries have poured into this. hamas has said that they'll not be joining these ney gosch yagzs, and we don't know where they'll be taking place, they will happen in doha or the capital of qatar and there's pessimism. as this continues the u.s. is sending top-level diplomats. amos hockstein is headed to beirut to bring the parties together to continue th

joining me now from tel aviv, international correspondent matt bradley.ow they were able to rescue this man? >> reporter: no, actually, that is something that we don't know. and it is something that we need to hear about. the fact is, if you remember, katy, in some of the previous operations, just a couple of months ago, that three hostages were rescued. there was a very, very violent confrontation, a huge battle that palestinian health authorities said killed 200 people just to rescue those three. now the israelis said it was more like 100 people who were killed but that is still a massive disparity and so far we haven't heard about the circumstances of this man's rescue except for the fact that he was rescued in rafah from the tunnels, from the tunnels that are underneath gaza and it is thought that a lot of the hostages are being kept in that vast tunnel system that runs under the gaza strip. but other than that, we're not hearing a lot of details an the israeli military don't want to release the details for security reasons. >> what about the cease-fi

joining us now in tel aviv nbc news foreign correspondent matt bradley.ation was completed and accomplished. now, the israelis have also been signaling it looks as though they are satisfied it is over and israeli officials i spoke with this morning essentially said they don't think that the israeli security establishment has the appetite or desire to escalate any further to punish hezbollah anymore than they already have. but there's an interesting disparity in information between the two sides. hezbollah has disputed what he israelis described as preemptive strike. hezbollah said they were the one who is fired on israelis and they were the ones who are retaliating for the assassination of a senior hezbollah operative and military leader last month. we are waiting to hear from the iranians. like hezbollah, the iranians, which are the primary backers of hezbollah, vowed to retaliate against ies rayies for the assassination of a senior hamas leader in central tehran. ismail haniyeh. peeve not seen retaliation but it may be coming. the word from israelies si

nbc's matt bradley is reporting from tel aviv. what's the latest there, matt? >> reporter: yeah, chris, i mean, you can file this story under the rare occasions in the middle east where the big news is something that didn't happen. there wasn't a mass civilian casualty event. there wasn't a breakout of a regional war that engulfed iran and the united states. this was the kind of thing where everybody had been expecting the worst for a month, and in fact, the united states had sent two aircraft carrier vik groups to the region, girding for this very event, trying to protect american allies here, and this didn't happen, and instead what we saw was something similar to the iranian strike against israel in april. it looked almost like a cursory symbolic attack that was meant in this case as vengeance, retribution. that's what hezbollah called it. a month after israelis assassinated a top hezbollah commander, in a suburb of beirut, they vowed vengeance, and this is when it came. we did see hundreds of hezbollah projectiles, drones and rockets fired at military targe

joining us now, nbc news correspondent matt bradley in beirut, this morning. you know about these latest rounds of negotiations? >> reporter: well, it is a great question. we don't know that much. we know they're going to be continuing and we just heard from the egyptian foreign minister, he said they're going to be continuing in cairo, starting in two days on thursday. so they're going to run thursday and friday after last week when they ran thursday and friday in doha. but, despite a lot of these starry eyed statements we have been hearing from the biden administration, this is still as ever shrouded in pessimism. antony blinken is in the region. they have been pouring diplomatic resources into this. this is the ninth trip to the region in ten months. we heard hamas is not participating in these negotiations. they have said they want to see the israelis and intermediaries go back to a previous proposal that they say everybody had already agreed upon and now we just heard from a senior hamas official speaking to al jazeera saying the united states' comments th

joining me now is matt bradley who's in beirut, and former cia senior intelligence officer and msnbc t matt. how imminent might be this attack be? >> that's the big question and as you mentioned, the white house and the united states is moving military assets into the region, bracing for a war that could affect not just israel and iran, really israeli allies like the united states, here's john kirby commenting on this just today. >> when the supreme leader says that he will avenge, we have to take that seriously. i don't know what they are going to do or when they will do it but we have to make sure that we are ready and we have the capabilities in the region to be able to help israel defend itself and quite frankly, defend our own national securities. we've been consistent about not wanting to see this war escalate, we've been very consistent about proving not just with words but with action, that we will stand up and defend israel. >> so alex, it's not just about iran attacking israel, the that is a major concern considering most recent escalation. it's also iran's so-called axis of

volatile situation in the middle east israel bracing for a retaliatory strike from iran nbc's matt bradley is reporting from beirut. what more do we know about the preparations underway right now? >> reporter: well, chris, we have been hearing from the israeli military they're saying they're on their highest level of alert, just as you said, and there's reports from washington, from israel, that they are girding for war as soon as this evening it's worth noting there have been warnings about this war for the past two weeks it's almost two weeks ago since twin assassinations really sent the entire region on a war footing, and raised hacks as far away from washington that's why we're seeing from the pentagon, all the way to the middle east. they even made the rare acknowledgment that they're sending a submarine. that's something they normally would keep under wraps the uss abraham lincoln is hastening from asia to the middle east. all of these shifts, joining another aircraft carrier all of them stocked with f 35s and f 22s. the stealth aircraft, all of it, waiting for a wider war. maybe not

joining me now from tel aviv is matt bradley. welcome. let's get to the strikes first of all and what has the law -- has block -- hezbollah i thought maybe you thought it tamped it down a little bit ? >> i think it does because what we have seen is a much anticipated hezbollah strike against israel which had been telegraphed for the past few weeks and it was only last month that the israelis had killed a top hezbollah commander in beirut which inflamed hezbollah . it was a few hours after that that the israelis were thought to have killed a top hamas official in iran. by the way hezbollah is backed by iran, hugely backed . they vowed to take retaliation with vengeance against the israelis which brought everybody in the region worrying that diplomats from the united states and israel and all throughout the world are worried that there would be a region wide war that could drag in the united states and on one of those two legs of concerns we do see a little bit of release and the fact that hezbollah has done this attack and the israelis hav

matt bradley has more. >>> tonight, israeli troops opening a fresh new front with a sprawling raid intowest bank, one of the largest assaults on palestinian territory in over 20 years. it started overnight with israeli airstrikes. we felt like something came down on us from the sky and there was an explosion, so this father in of three, who was injured in the strike. he lost two of his sons. israeli armored vehicles and bulldozers claude under roads. around 2:00 a.m. they rated the refugee camp with a large number of soldiers on foot, said this paramedic. israel soldiers declared the west bank a full-fledged war and called for evacuating palestinians, which could mayor israel's operations in gaza, hundreds of troops pushed into the west bank. palestinian health authorities said at least 10 people have been killed. fighting in the west bank is not new. for years, palestinians in the west bank have suffered regular, sometimes deadly harassment from israelis settlers, violence human rights groups say has been ignored and in some cases encouraged by israel's government. more than 660 palest

joining me from tel aviv is nbc news correspondent matt bradley.e expect the military operation in the west bank to last? >> reporter: that's unclear. we have been told this is the first phase of this operation and that it could last several days, at least that's what the media is reporting. this has been going on on the smaller scale in these same cities for several months. it's been going on for several years, and before october 7th, the united nations had said that was the deadliest year, 2023, for palestinians in recorded history. so we have been seeing there was at least 660 palestinians killed 37 there's been quite a few killed at the hands of settlers. so when we talk about this latest round of fighting, it's not just confined to what we have seen in the last 24 hours. this is an ongoing operation. we can expect it to last for a few more days. but this is just the fist phase. >> israel is accusing iran of funding militants in the west bank and helping to arm them. do we expect iran to respond to that charge? >> iran has responded. we heard a

nbc news international correspondent matt bradley joins me from babe ruth, lebanon. you have about cease-fire negotiations especially with all the starts and stops that we have seen? -- >> we've heard from hamas. >> reporter: they are not going to be sending a delegation to those august 15 talks. we don't know where those talks are going to be occurring, either cairo or in qatar. but they really being presented by intermediaries. the -- is kind of a last ditch effort to get those negotiations over the line to bring a measure of peace to the gaza strip -- to free those remaining hostages being held in the gaza strip. the fact that hamas says they will be participating is a major blow, but hamas has said they want to see that all of the sides just adhere to previous deals that have been proposed here they said that the israelis have put up obstacles ahead during president biden. there's still some hope for this deal and the first interview since he first back down from the presidency. he spoke with cbs news and had this to say about those negotiations. >> on foreign po

. >> now from tel aviv is matt bradley and nbc news investigative reporter, dan delouis.ow is it looking and how have this weekend's attacks placed pressure on any cease fire? >> reporter: the prospects of a cease fire are about as grim as they were since last november with the last successful cease fire that released about half of the hostages and brought peace for about a week to the gaza strip. we've heard from hamas, the israelis that it doesn't look good. the main sticking point is something that was added more recently by netanyahu, israel's prime minister. he said he wants to see a more permanent troop presence on the philadelphia corridor. another name for the border between egypt's sinai peninsula and the gaza strip. it was only a couple of months ago the israelis took that over during their operation to take over rafah. now, it's looking as though that's a major sticking point and something that netanyahu had added on even after the biden administration said that the deal they presented and put in front of the security council at the united nations that was vote

with us now is matt bradley in tel aviv. and former israeli consul general.jamin netanyahu said yesterday's attacks are not the end of the story, so what could potentially be coing next? >> yeah, the whole region is still kind of on a war footing, waiting to see what happens. the big other shoe to drop here is iran. you remember hezbollah, who are the ones that launched the attacks yesterday and it was israel who launched in a preemptive strike, they vowed to attack the reuate for the assassination of the official just outside of beirut a month ago. hours after that assassination, there was another one in tehran, the capital of iran, of a top hamas official. iran has also vowed to retaliate, but they haven't yet. the entire region is waiting for, but there's still these negotiations that are ongoing in cairo. i spoke with a top israeli official yesterday and was told that israelis believe that iran is waiting to see how these negotiations go before they decide whether or not and how they are going to be retaliating. so that's still something that's kind of ou

joining me now is matt bradley in beirut. it is good to see you.ate against israel soon, possibly within the week. what is the latest with the attacks look like and what they are preparing for? >> that is right. they have their own grievances. as blah had one of their own assassinated in beirut where i am now. iran endured the assassination of a hamas leader that they blamed on the israelis. there are a lot of worries that this will break out into a regionwide war and that this is going to come not from iranian proxy groups throughout the region, the so called axis of resistance, the patchwork of sponsored militant groups that are inimical to israel throughout all of the middle east, but that it could come from iran itself and from all of these groups. the analyst and the government officials in lebanon that i've been speaking to say that is a real worry though no one knows exactly what is going on in tehran and in the headquarters of hezbollah and whether they will respond in any predictable way. you and i spoke about this a couple months ago back
