again salute mazie hirono and tammy duckworth, our leaders in the senate, where the legislation passed almost unanimously. a clear sign of the congress' unity on this priority. i, too, represent -- blessed to represent a district that is blessed with a large aapi population. i have seen as has some of our other colleagues firsthand the hate crimes exacted against them intensified since last year. over 6600 incidences of anti-aapi discrimination and violence from march of last year to march of this year. all 50 states have been reported. businesses vandalized. seniors attacked. families living in fear. and hundreds more occur unreported in the shadows. this is what we know. these attacks are even more shameful in light of the heroism of our aapi community during the pandemic against which two million -- against this pandemic, two million asian americans and pacific islanders are fighting on the frontlines on health care, as health care providers, first responders, our police and fire, and other essential workers. as a californian, again i have seen firsthand the pain in my community as

mazie hirono talking about the border, henry cuellar, democrat border member of congress, they know thatnot okay with this. >> now, nicole, again, it was about 20 employees over at base camp left out of 60. in that case, those are 20 people who decided that their opinions were why base camp existed and they wanted to, i don't know, maybe burn it up from the inside out. you know, there's places those people can get jobs like, as an example, yes, the npr, perhaps the government. this is not what businesses need to be doing. do you think businesses need to worry about that, and do you think the base camp a approach was right? >> you know, i actually really do. and i can tell you that a lot of businesses are trying to e integrate some of this wokenessing into things that they're requiring for their employees. there are a lot of hospital systems that are requiring a ton of continuing medical education or continuing education on certain issues that really don't seem to have anything to do with medicine, but they're trying to fall in line with some of these popular opinions right now. and, you

joining us now, member of the senate judiciary committee, senator mazie hirono. senator hirono, appreciate you being with us. what does it say this commission bill, this january 6th commission bill, seems to be basically dead on arrival in the senate? >> it's just as you say. it's their pursuit of herd immunity for what happened on january 6th. they are closing their eyes, ears, everything, to what happened. they are afraid to get to the bottom of it because they might actually be subpoenaed to testify on what they knew, what they did, what they -- you know, all -- all of that. so, they just don't want to get to the truth, because they're afraid of it. >> kevin mccarthy was, personally, lobbying your senate-republican colleagues to oppose the commission, the morning after the former president released a statement calling on mccarthy and mcconnell to defeat the bill. i mean, think that's a coincidence? >> not at all. they are, still, totally afraid of former-president trump. it's just amazing. so they have handed over all this power, to trump, to continue to hold

what ppened in the senate, negotiations in that 50/50 body between two senators, mazie hirono of hawaii and susan collins of maine, they ended up coming up with an agreement where democrats dropped some covid-specific language, the bill was broadened to include all hate crimes and then itas able to pass through the senate and now the house. all of that said, there are other reasons this is significant. one of them is there have been very few notable hate crimes bill in recent times. this is the first one really in a decade to make it through congress. also, very few bills at all re making it through congress. by my count, just about ten this entire year have passed both chambers, these are bills that are not just rec eke nice ago holiday or something like that. so it's significant it pass odd an bipartisan means and significant in the asian-american community following the six women in slant and asian-americansassaulted and harassed. he's grace who co-authored the original bill. >> for too long asian minister have been seen as invisible and silent, we are often viewed as foreigners and

i was proud of our colleague, senator mazie hirono, a leader in the asian american community, who posted on social media, i've said it before and i'll say it again -- an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. we must all condemn the recent surge of anti-semitic attacks in our country. episcopal of us needs to stand -- each of us needs to stand up, speak out and confront this hatred. at my last in-person o.s.c. meeting before the covid-19, i hosted an event with my european colleagues entitled lessons from the past, leadership for the future, where we spoke about the lessons from the haul -- holocaust, including early warning signs, some of which have been rising to the surface again. these include the rise of populist leaders, demonizing of minorities, propagandizing of hate and the neglect of refugee protection which ultimately became the factors that resulted in genocide. this month i chaired a helsinki commission hearing on preventing atrocities and the u.s. holocaust memorial center naomi culver. this project provides an innovative risk assessment tool using methods to spotli
