. >>> right now shortcut through menlo park has been cut off. hundreds of drivers have been using the willows neighborhood to avoid nearby construction and get to the bayshore freeway faster. kpix5's len ramirez with how the city is now cracking down. len? >> reporter: well, there is a maximum enforcement effort going on right now here at willow road and durham and some of the side streets feeding onto it. the freeway is up with block that way and a lot of -- 1 block that way and a lot of folks have been cutting through the side streets to try and save a few minutes, but the problem is it jams up the back neighborhood. so those folks have again up in arms because they can't get into their homes. so the police department is having a maximum enforcement effort. in fact, this car right here, looks like they're setting up for a turn now which would be an illegal turn if she goes ahead and makes that right turn. so the cops are out here writing ticket after ticket. dispute numerous warning signs drivers still use side streets to cut onto willow road

. >> reporter: good morning, the geologists here at the survey here in menlo park tells us it's sort of business as usual. reminder that we do live in earthquake country. the question beasked is does this fortelling of a larger event? the usgs says there's only about a 5% chance that it would be followed bay larger quake. now 49.4 that hit around 2:40 is considered to be light in strength. the reason so many people felt it is because the epicenter was deep located eight miles below the clairemont hotel in berkeley which allowed the energy to radiate across a much greater distance. now the usgs believes that the amount of shaking might have actually been a bit low for an earthquake of this magnitude. fortunately, no reports of damage, just items that fell off shelves at stores like this safeway in san leandro. it is not unusual, and there's been three or four quakes of this size on the fault. the fault is always creeping slowly. most sections slip by with no problems whatsoever. >> but there are patches where the creep is inhibited, either the rocks are rough or they're tightly clampe

kpix 5's jessica flores is live at usgs in menlo park this morning. what are officials saying about this 4.4 earthquake? >> reporter: so far, it's quiet here. but we expect an expert to come here and tell us all about the earthquake, the hayward fault line and what this means for future earthquakes and what this means for the bay area. we haven't heard about damage at this point but let's show you video of what it looked like. it was shaking for about five seconds, initially reported as 4.5 and then downgraded to 4.4. that's a rude wake-up call for folks across the bay area jolted out of bed including myself. so if you if you were up at 2:39 a.m., you probably felt the earthquake for five seconds. it rattled berkeley all the way down to -- people could feel it in san jose. people felt it in san francisco and even to concord. i live in oakland where i felt it. so it was widespread across the bay area. but the epicenter was in berkeley. later this morning we expect to hear from seismologists' usgs about the nature of the earthquake, how deep was and wha

matt keller live for us at usgs headquarters in menlo park. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. we are at the home of the experts at the usgs survey. we put a call in to them and are waiting to hear their perspective what happened this morning. check out this perspective, the abc 7 seismograph. you can see at 2:39 when it peaked, when that quake hit, the u.s. geological survey the quake was two miles from berkeley and a preliminary depth of eight miles. no damage or injuries were recorded. i want to show you something i found on the usgs website, a community internet intensity map shows you where they're getting reports from people all across the bay area. you can see where the epicenter is at berkeley and down into san jose some reports of people who felt it there. i live in san jose. i was getting ready this morning, and i did not feel it. that was one of the things. but my photographer, ian, lives in santa cruz and, guess what, he felt it. what did it feel like? >> i felt it. it shook me pretty good. the whole
