it's very different for his wife, michelle obama, michelle had no green screen. her's is a far more familiar black american story rooted in a family that experienced slavery, jim crow, the great migration. as a result, in the early days of campaigning, it was easier for mainstream america, including some conservative black commentators to understand michelle obama using common stereotypes about black women. hence the angry black woman image given to her in this "new yorker" cover after michelle obama found a new-found pride in her country. eventually michelle obama was able to win over a majority of americans with her connection to mothers, military families, even her sense of style. in fact, her 66% favorability rating is now higher than that of her husband, which is currently at about 50%, but the tale of the two michelles, michele bachmann and michelle obama reminds us that we are not yet living in any kind of post-racial america. when michele bachmann says she once lost her faith in america, her criticism is seen as an act of patriotism. she wants to improve

today, michele bachmann is generating a lot of energy and excitement.nk the view was that today was a very important test for her, because she rocketed to the top of the polls very quickly after declaring her candidacy in june. one of the questions that has been hovering over her is whether her excitement would have staying power. this would allow her to say that she was able to quickly generate a lot of excitement in iowa and her campaign will go forward with that energy. in contrast, gov. pawlenty has struggled with the polling and fund-raising. today is a test for him to stay alive. there will be a lot of chatter and the results are close, there will be a lot of chatter if he is near the top of the list about what is next for him. i expect it will be his goal the state cannot get much worse than it has been in the will stay in for logger. if it is a tougher laws, on the questions will be harder for him to answer. host: he has spent so much time campaigning in iowa over the last four or five months, almost living there. he has a lot of expectations in

cnbc's michelle caruso-cabrera joins us from cnbc global headquarters. michelle, what are the monday overseas market openings telling us so far. >> well, lester, 45 minutes ago new zealand opened slightly higher. looks like australia is going to open higher in about 15 minutes. gold is lower. u.s. futures are higher. right now it suggests that at least for now the markets are calmer than they were last week. still, there are a lot of key events coming up next week which could roil the markets. >> and so many concerns about europe. i understand european union officials are going to get together earlier in the week. how might that affect the markets? >> angela merkel, the leader of germany is meeting with the leader of france, nicolas sarkozy in paris. the state of the european union right now, the situation is very grave. there's discussions about whether or not they should kick out greece, the weakest member of the euro. that would be akin to us talking about kicking out one of the states in the u.s. and telling them they couldn't use the dollar anymore.

has he put his focus on michelle bachmann?o the iowan voters, do they seem upset by that at all, or dough think, okay, is he making his points clear? >> it doesn't seem like anyone is upset by that really. i mean, at this point in the campaign they're going to be trading barbs and have to come out and debate, and so the idea that he is losing some of the minnesota nice, i mean, tim pawlenty has always been a nice guy. i don't think that's hurting him at all here. people want to see some fight in him. >> who has the most to lose at the straw poll today? >> oh, tim pawlenty for sure. he was at the state fair yesterday, and a minnesota reporter actually was trailing him, and asked him if he doesn't do well here today and if he doesn't do well in these caucuses, will he run for the senate in 2012 against democrat amy as opposed running for president, and that's not a question that he wanted to be getting yesterday. >> but you talk about tim pawlenty having a lot at stake, but what about folks like herman cain, newt gingrich? i mea

michele bachmann 13%. and ron paul 10%.ut when you throw in rick perry, the texas governor, who is expected to announce tomorrow and sarah palin, who dropped in at the iowa state fair today, as she contemplates a run, the numbers changed to this. romney 21%. perry 13%. palin 8%. bachmann 7%. joining us is pollster scott rasmussen. if you were to right now predict a winner tomorrow in iowa, who would it be? >> in terms of the straw poll, i would say the winner will be michelle backman. where you go from there, who knows? but, right now we don't know who is in the race. we did a poll that includes rick perry but not sarah sarah palin. in that case perry and romney become virtual co-frontrunners. bachmann is a little bit behind. things are just getting sorted out in the republican side of the debate right now. >> juan: do we know who is supporting, for example, da we know how evangelicals are voting, social conservatives are voting, fiscal conservatives? libertarians? do we know anything like that about how it breaks down? >>
