the work started today and news4's molette green is at the van ness station to tell us how long it will there. hello. >> reporter: hi, angie. people got off a bus realizing this west entrance is closed. you have to use the east entrance across the street. there's only one set of moving stairs going up and another one going down. today begins a complex job of replacing these old escalators with more durable, reliable ones. this is welcome news to riders who have had to deal with outages in the system because of the broken escalators. but this is going to take time to install four new entrance escalators that are coming. each one taking 40 weeks from start to finish. the work will take place while the station is closed to passengers. so the other escalators will not be running and that's why part of the reason why it takes so long. heads up to all of the metro riders using this station. it is possible that metro may need to close this station temporarily and with little notice at times to prevent overcrowding. that's the latest from van ness station. back to you. >> molette green for us,

molette green is in silver spring now. telling us about the new policy changes. molette? >> reporter: eun, good morning. yeah, the family at the center of what has become a national debate lives just a couple of blocks down that way from this silver spring park. today, we expect to get clarification, a clear cut position from child protective services about so-called free range parenting. basically allowing your children to walk or play alone. essentially saying it is not considered neglect. it is a parenting choice. now they're saying this is not a new position. this is offering additional clarification. take a look at this statement now from the maryland department of human resources. we see our role as responding when a child is harmed or at risk of significant harm. now, when all of this blew up i had a chance to sit down with the meitiv family. the mom and the 10-year-old son. they strongly believe that children are at more risk, greater risk, by just riding in a car than walking home alone from a playground like this. we're live this morning in silver spring. back t

news4's molette green is in bethesda now where this could have a big impact on your commute. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. absolutely. we're live outside the silver spring library. one of the proposed stops along the purple line. one of the biggest and most closely watched decisions could come today. this has a big impact on two major maryland counties in our region. the governor has been quite critical of the cost at nearly $2.5 billion. and asking his transportation secretary to look for cheaper ways to do this and possibly asking prince george's and montgomery counties to pay even more. but we don't have confirmation that the governor will address the purple line later on today. we know this is a major transportation infrastructure announcement. all eyes have been on this particular long awaited plan to bring light rail connecting bethesda in montgomery county to new carrollton in prince george's county. we are talking jobs and easing traffic, but it does possibly get taxpayers who don't use public transit to actually help pay for this. now we're going to s
