we were lucky enough to get funding from the national endowment for humanities, and in the course of doing that, a number of scholars came to new bedford to speak about this subject and it became clear that there were a lot of stories about people escaping from the far south of the water that weren't showing up as a focus in the historical figure in the subject, and we thought it would be a good subject for a book and having run this workshop for years i took it upon myself in 2015, 2016, i took it upon myself to collect this into a volume. one of the early inspirations, of course, was jeff bolster's book, "black jacks," and he writes about how being a mariner -- first of all, almost 20% of the american sea borne workforce were people of color, and so jeff bolster's book points out that important fact, and he also ties it into the underground railroad and he said, look, this was an opportunity for people to escape from the south, and he didn't follow-up on it, his focus was on documenting the number and importance of people of color and maritime trades of professions. one of the thin
