they would have been basically guarding the navy ports, navy yards, basically cops. it was defeated. how was it defeated? it was defeated because the american public rose up. one of the marines fathers was head of the naval affairs committee and basically brought it to america's attention. and they said, no, we want marines. a lot of it was based on china and guantanamo bay. you can start to see people are getting irritated with these marines. once the army, especially, so they survive. and then comes 1914 and vera cruz. and the marines have almost gone out of business this time by the navy. and they said marines, we challenge you to make a landing, put up heavy naval weapons and participate in the 1914 naval exercises. and if you can't do it, your funding is gone. so luckily, john, the greatest naval commander of all, takes command of it. he takes that unit down there to calebra and succeeds in planting the guns and bringing in some aviation into the fleet exercises. so it's another time the marines could have gone away but an uprising in mexico brought the marines

a thai navy s.e.a.l. and that underscored how challenging this will be and it could take hours and the parents won't know for a long time, all of the parents, whether their sons will come out safely from the back of that mountain behind me. >> david, this is such an international effort at this point. but the decision on who comes out first actually comes down to those boys, correct? >> reporter: it does. imagine the human drama unfolding in that cave system. the governor telling us it will be up to the boys and to a consulting doctor who is assessing their health, who will decide to go first. who will be the first one. and that first boy that they pull through is so important because then they get to test the entire theory how they will get the kids out, through this zero visibility tunnel under the earth in the water through possibly some glow sticks they mark some sense of where they are going with the specialist divers. imagine that decision. there will be several boys i'm sure ready to do it but some

they take it up to the secretary of the navy. it takes a presidential declaration by president wilson to get the regiment to france. regiment gets to go on board the transport and the army says we can't transport you, we are full. the navy says we will take you on our ships. the fifth marines get there with the first division. they are again be first to fight. the marine corps is looking at an entire division to go in. an entire division. included heavy artillery, the whole bit. he started putting them along the supply and guarding things. the things that marines do. he said they are too different from us. they have different regulations and so forth. again, back to wilson. wilson says send over the sixth marines. another declaration. it takes the president twice to send marines to france. the marines got their nose under the tent and want to keep being -- sending marines over. what does he keep doing with them? he says i will use these gentlemen in their best duty, which is to guard things, but no combat. and then, wilson goes t

that is the story of the navy, the american navy in world war i. wilsonh 1917, president had a real threat on his hands. german u-boats were sinking american shipping at an alarming rate. even before we entered world war i. there was a decision made to bring naval guards onboard merchant ships, to arm them with typically five inch guns and give the merchant ship a crew of about 15 naval personnel. they are naval guards during one of those was james delaney. james delaney was a tough irishman from boston, massachusetts. his body was inked with the ships he served on, serving since 18. his life was the navy, and he was given command of a naval gun cam on the uss -- the ss pana, merchant ship. their journey in the summer was mid-summer andl they were making their way back to the united states, and all of a sudden a torpedo nearly hit the ship. it was then quickly followed by artillery fire. the men manned their guns and began to respond. ewed by anwas cr expert, lieutenant captain dickman who had sunk 40 ships, na. no his prey was the campa they manne

the oss maritime unit is the navy seals. i wrote a book called the first seals which chronicles their extraordinary story where a medical student from the university of pennsylvania who tinkers in the summer with old gas masks and bicycle pumps develops a rebreather for the united states. the navy seals are born in a pool at a hotel a few blocks away from here which was a large indoor pool. they test the rebreather. a dentist from hollywood, hmg woolly, who is a screenwriter for paramount but also a commando and liaison officer with the british government. they come together to develop the first seals. it is extraordinary. taylor survives a german concentration camp after he parachutes behind the lines. the story of the oss is a story hidden in the national archives. i spent 20 years digging through literally cubic miles of records, some that had never been seen since the war to reveal these extraordinary stories. >> can you talk about the tradition of the silent guard? was that done simultaneously when the soldier was reste
