starting to soar throughout the bay area, a dead fish cleanup today appears to be a sign of things to come. it's connected to an algae bloom that experts say could get even worse. nbc bay area's pete suratos joins us live along the san francisco bay with this story. pete, what are you learning? >> yeah, well, we're learning this algae bloom is really affecting the entire san francisco bay, like you see behind me here. the experts are telling us it's a combination of factors. and we saw the impact of this algae bloom firsthand at oakland's lake merritt. for several hours today at lake merritt, you can see crews removing piles of dead fish. a surreal scene for locals, trying to figure out what's going on. >> it looks biblical. it's pretty awful. >> it's concerning because it's a huge living lake. and everything seems to be at a stand still. >> mostly what we're thinking is that there is a -- just a perfect storm of conditions right now that's causing this particular algae to just bloom and flourish. >> the executive director of san francisco's bayary keeper, a nonprofit devoted to protecting the bay. she says the perfect storm of too many nutrients in the water combi

this is nbc bay area news. tonight we want to get you up on some of the headlines that we're taking a close look at tonight. a teacher, a cheer coach in contra costa county arrested for sexual misconduct with minors. tonight the school district says he worked -- the work that he worked at is adding a second background check to its hiring process. 41-year-old nicholas moses by taught biology at the middle school in danville. he is now charged with sending pornographic images to two teenagers. he also worked as a cheer coach for nor cal elite. the company fired him after his arrest in the san ramon unified school district has placed him on leave. the district said they did their typical background check through the state, but the checks didn't catch two prior arrests because he wasn't convicted on either charge. >> that's happening to other people's children, and it is pretty disgusting. >> the principal runs a great school. and i think it's so unfortunate that that's missed, you know. >> the school district is n

i'll let you know if we get close to this, and t twohe >>> tonight, a nbc bay area exclusive. another death investigation involving an elderly resident at an atria assisted living facility. a man died after heingested something. >> he was 94 years old. although he didn't elaborate, the son tells me he thinks what happened to his father was similar to what happened at atria park of san mateo. although quiet outside atria park walnut creek, an intrnl investigation is under way after a 94-year-old resident ingested a substance last week. they were alerted to the case after another case over the weekend. the senior living facility staff say staff accidently gave the 93-year-old woman cleaning fluid to drink because they thought it was fruit juice. two others drank it and were hospitalized. facility officials issued a statement saying on august 23rd, just four days before the san mateo incident, a resident appeared to suffer a negative reaction to something they ingested. they go on to say it is unclear whether the resident ingested anything harmful. we were informed he passed away
