. >> reporter: to better understand the stolen guns plague, nbc 10 and more than a dozen nbc stations across the country, teamed up with the non-profit journalism organization the trace. >> i can tell you invaluably the vast majority of these guns that are stolen will wind up being used in a crime. >> reporter: sure enough, we obtained data from more than 1,000 law enforcement agencies in 36 states plus the district of columbia. more than 840,000 gun records in total. and of those, we found more than 23,000 guns stolen across the country that were later connected in other crimes. including at least 1,500 serious violent crimes. across our region, we tallied almost 5,200 firearms seized, recovered or found during the past five years. and that same period, about 1,100 guns were reported lost or stolen. without data from major departments like philadelphia pd which refused our requests, and with no requirement to report a gun stolen in pennsylvania, our local tally is an incomplete sample. and, yet, we still found frightening examples. like a .40 caliber handgun reported lost to philly p
