of those, 111 had played for the nfl.were found to have signs of neurodegenerative disease, cte short for chronic traumatic encephalopathy. symptoms, memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, aggression, depression, anxiety, impulse control and sometimes suicidal behavior. joining me now is chris nowinski, a harvard football player. doctor, i should say this was not a random sample, there was some selection bias here, because these were donated by concerned family members. but still, a pretty stunning finding. >> there's no question about it. i mean, this is the largest case series ever of football players' brains. and even if it's biased, the idea that family members who might have thought their loved one had cte, were accredit 99% of the time. it's striking to me as a former football player. and if you look at not only the nfl brains but the ones that played in college and high school, what we're seeing is a dose dons relationship not unlike smoking and lung cancer that each of those thousands of hits that players take

many of them from the nfl. others from other, whether it was college or high school. 90% of all the people they studied suffered from cte. and again, i'm going to give that you number for the pro players from the nfl of the 11, 110 had the cte, the chronic traumatic end except off think, debilitating brain disease causing speech problems and memory loss and dementia. the effect were also seen in some of the former high school players, so right now we know what the cte can only be diagnosed after death. >> not only the concussions but leads to the suicides, you know, other component every brain damage. so, of comes, you think about that if the future. football used to be america's sport. so now, it is like par rent scared to bring their children out, because of the concussion issue. >> and right now there are so many kids playing over the sumner camps, they're get egg ready to start the football season coming up in probably a week or so. last time the first time, last year, that the nfl publicly acknowledged a c

the study looked at players of all levels from high school up to the nfl. but the numbers of cte in the nfl players were shocking. what was your reaction to the finding? >> honestly, my reaction was we have a lot to learn about cte. certainly, this study is the largest cte case study, our case theory that has been published, and the number of cases like you mentioned is surprising, and more than i would have expected. what we also have to remember is that this study was completed with the convenience sample. meaning that the individuals from this study donated their brains due to experiencing symptoms, likely. which may or may not be related to cte. and unfortunately, that means that estimates of prevailence cannbe results of this study. and unfortunately, may lead to the risk for cte, and also estimates of presay lens being heightened. >> doctor, what else did you notice, even though it was skewed toward those who have pte already. >> the other thing that stood out to me was the number of participants that had signs of dementia. in the mild cte pathology g
