it remains a volatile day, olivia and we have been watching the dow go up and down. have we seen the sell-off balance? >> believe it or not, most people say this could have been worse. we are pretty close to session l lows. dow off nearly 500 points. bottom line, traders didn't see this coming and investors don't know what will happen next and those things together are cre e creating a lot of uncertainty a big flashing sell signal for stocks. overnight the carnage in european and asian markets is far worse, a big hit to oil. the only thing being bought up is gold and the u.s. dollar. nobody actually knows what the economic consequences of this are really going to be competent they're pretty certain it will be bad for britain. one of the things you have to trying to figure out how britain will try to renegotiate these trade deals and how long it will take. a lot of uncertainty and leading to the fact this now makes it a lot less likely that rates will rise any time soon. that means your mortgage rate will stay lower for longer and the only thing that seems traders are

olivia stern joins us live from the stock exchange.livia, have things begun to rebalance or facing a lot of volatility? >> we are off session lows. it's interesting, not a huge amount of volatility, despite the fact there's a huge a. volume and some traders down here have been telling me they think that is a sign that there might be a little bit of confidence out there because the vix is known as the fear index, and if it's not spiking, that suggests there is confidence. the number it is scary. off now 275 points. s&p all five out of 38 points right now. flirting with that psychologically important 2000 level. basically we're back to where we were in march, we've been wiped away the gains for 2016. i'm looking at a dow that is 17,124 in december of 2014 was the first time it broke through 18,000. it's interesting. i think what everybody down here is trying to figure out, andrea, is to what extent the american economy are exposed to the brexit and what you are hearing people begin to say is perhaps some stocks have been oversold if they

let's start with the markets right now, olivia. where are we? >> reporter: we are off by about 430 points, craig, which is a drop of 2.4%. it could have been worse. we started off down as low as 534 points. there is a little bit of relief here, believe it or not, on wall street that this could have been worse because it was carnage overnight. a lot of traders actually up all night watching the market in europe sell off anywhere between 5% and 10%. look what happened to the pound. the pound falling now to its lowest level since 1985. there actually is carnage in the global currency market, so traders have been bracing for this and really nobody did in fact expect to see it coming. the question is what happens now. perhaps markets getting a little bit of heart from comments from janet yellen. in fact we've heard from many central bankers saying that if bringt does vote to leave the european union, they would be willing to provide a little more support to prevent financial instability. but if there is this uncertainty now, janet yellen is a lot mor

olivia sterns monitoring all of it from the floor of the new york stock exchange. number right now but it's been around 500 something down. >> yes. all day, kate, it was sort of holding steady around 500, but in the last hour up to the close it was down as much as 640. we are well off that. the dow still down some 520 points. that's about a 3% drop. that is a pretty big move for the dow overall. that basically means we've wiped away our gains for the entire year. bank stocks the hardest hit. bank stocks such as goldman sachs, jpmorgan having their worst day since 2011. oil taking a big hit today. the only asset classes seeing it big is the u.s. dollar. the british pound plunges. the british pound falling 10% overnight. now trading at $1.34. it was the weakest price since 1985. overall traders just very unsure about what is going to happen next. nobody really knows what the economic impact is going to be of a brexit. traders here in fact now taking bets on which will be the next european country to vote to leave the european union. a lot of uncertainty down here and

olivia, give us a sense of how the u.s.re things stand. >> peter, we are off now by about 237 points right now, but that is about 100 points and we were doing it below a couple hours ago. we were pairing early losses and still extending the declines. interesting you bring up lehman brothers and wiped more equity back then than in 2008. peter costa, peter alexander was making the point that we lost more value in equity globally on friday than we did in september 2008 when lehman went bankrupt. put this sell-off in perspective, is it 2008, august 2012 when the u.s. got downgraded, what does it feel like? >> it doesn't feel like either one of them. i used to work for williams, that is one of my history about me, but no, it doesn't feel like that at all. it just feels that there's a lot of uncertainty as far as the foreign, you know, what's going on in europe. i think that will work out. i think that we are looking at a lot of opportunities to get back in the market. you also look at a market that was fairly pretty highly price
