the police in ottawa say the gunman was not under surveillance before this attack. rts to the contrary were erroneous. so, he was not under surveillance. he bought a car on tuesday, according to police, committed the crime on wednesday, got out there at the war memorial, shot the guy -- shot the reservist, then ran to the east block of parliament, then took a car to the center block of parliament, and then all the rest is detailed by police. he was, according to our producers in the booth -- he was in touch with another person on the canadian terror watch list. he is known to have extremist beliefs so he was in touch with someone else on the watch list. but they have no reason to believe the attack of monday, which ran over and killed one soldier and hurt another, and the attack of wednesday, which killed this reservist soldier, who was standing guard at the war memorial no reasons to believe those are connected. no evidence to show they're connected. lots of new information on this attack coming out today. extraordinary speed with the information coming out of the r

i can tell you the police were certainly acting like they thought there was another shooter. the downtown area of ottawa the four blocks south was shut. police were running up and down those streets telling people, get back, stay away from the buildings, and this is hours after the initial shooting, saying get back. they were looking up at the roofs as though they thought there was a gunman on the roof. so they certainly were acting as though they thought there was someone else. they were searching buildings. but as yet the police have not confirmed whether there were other shooters. earlier in the day they were talking about two, possibly three shooters. it's not clear whether that is the case now. >> it's very unusual to hear of reports like this coming from canada. has there been an unusually tense reaction among people on the streets in ottawa especially? >> well, this is very unusual in ottawa, and, yes, there's been a tense reaction. i think people are, you know, afraid, tense, concerned. ottawa is a quiet town. it's a city of less than a million people. it's the capital, but it's a quiet capital.

. >> at one point, again, constable, with the ottawa police department on the line with us live, earlier there were reports and we saw video there were checkpoints leaving the area trying to make sure there were no other suspects. checkpoints along the river that separate the two provinces. is that still the case? is. >> i believe to a lesser degree it is still the case because we're not letting anyone in or out of the immediate perimeter or crime scene area. >> is there any information on the suspect who is now deceased that you can share with us? >> no. the investigators are going to look into his background and try to figure out if and why he was doing this. >> i heard witnesses describe this man who's been shot and killed as a short white guy. that's all i heard. can you confirm that or tell us any more about him? >> no. i don't have any information on him. i don't even have a description of the suspect. >> then there's this car that is outside parliament hill or somewhere on parliament hill which one mp described driving past this morning on the way to work. said it was very strange

after the shootings and ever widening lockdown of downtown ottawa ensued, police fanned out across ottawa, and there was a manhunt on the presumption there might be more than one shooter amid a situation that ottawa police describe as fluid and ongoing. part of the context for the canadian reaction was the fact that canada had elevated its terror threat level just last week. and two days ago, a radical jihadist, also a convert, ran over two soldiers at a suburban mall in montreal, killing one of them. it's been declared a terrorist attack this afternoon, president obama called prime minister harper to voice america's solidarity with canada and later had this to say. >> it emphasizes the degree to which we have to remain vigilant when it comes to dealing with these kinds of acts of senseless violence or terrorism. and i pledged, as always, to make sure that our national security teams are coordinating very closely given not only as canada one of our closest allies in the world, but they're our neighbors and our friends, and obviously there's a lot of interaction between canadians and the u
