here is the other thing it gave oz. oz essentially got a one hour free pass. to look at this analytically, i think he underperformed for the opportunity that he had. >> he was wrong on a lot of facts. >> he created his own problems. fetterman never could put him in a corner, never could make him sort of corner him on language for obvious reasons. but it was oz that brought up local political leaders with abortion rights that essentially handed to fetterman an opportunity to at least neutralize or at least attempt to neutralize some of the bad debate narrative. let's all take a step back here. if a race is decided by 50,000 votes or less, then it all mattered. other than that, debates usually only matter in presidential races. i do think that let's not overrate this. it doesn't mean it's not a zero impact. let's also probably take a step back and realize -- >> it will depend on turnout, on party structure as well as the millions and millions of dollars now that republicans are pouring in here. >> this is -- either they see an opportunity or there's nowhere else

oz. many said they're worried to have those conversations with those friends because they are known fetterman supporters, they know people will come to them and ask them for their thoughts, they did have compassion for fetterman and they spoke highly of some points he made but overwhelmingly there is concern among fetterman's performance among many of his most hardened supporters. >> fetterman again tried to address this straight up and told voters i'm not going to be perfect. i'll mess up some words. one other question if you were concerned about the performance and you just say, okay, is he getting better every day so therefore be in the senate months from now? one way to answer that would be more transparent about your medical records. that did come up in the debate and fetterman has released a letter from his doctor but his doctors have not talked to reporters even to experienced medical reporters. he said he thinks that should be enough. >> i believe if my doctor believes that i'm fi

oz going on that debate stage tonight, what do you need to do? >> he's been focusing on the issues that our polls show pennsylvania voters care about which is crime, economy, inflation, those issues they've been looking at that he's been talking about. the other thing i'm interested by, he has been unpopular in some of these numbers but you've seen republicans coming around him and closing around him in the last few days. you saw senate republicans and their fund them use to help candidates fundraise moving funds out of new hampshire, putting it in pennsylvania. that's interesting to see them surrounding him and seeing these core voters of his really close in, republicans, around him to help him in this. that's what i will be watching to see how he handles that. the way he talks about that and the way he talks about what matters most to these voters could be what he determines if they win two weeks from now. >> the net favorability issue, do you think that might make him cautious in trying to poke fetterman on health issues? >> if i were him, i'm

we know oz wanted more debates.e're going to see them here in just about 30 minutes for the first time and only time together during this campaign. >> jessica, thank you very much. now i want to go to founder and director of the university of virginia's center for politics. he is the longtime trusted election forecaster behind the newsletter "sabado's crystal ball." i always enjoy speaking to you, and this debate is amazing at how important it may be. you have this race in pennsylvania as a leads demin favor of fetterman. but i know you're watching closely tonight to decide whether it stays there or moves back to a tossup race. how much does the debate tonight impact your calculation? >> very, very rarely does a debate matter as much as this one's going to matter in the pennsylvania senate race. and it's going to matter because, for a combination of reasons. john fetterman's health and ability to serve in the senate has become the central issue of the campaign. maybe it shouldn't have. but it is, it's there. and the

mehmet oz, his first and only debate just got underway in harrisburg. if you hours ago, the independent challenger efforts turned pulled out of the race through his support behind lieutenant governor fetterman, quoting from his tweet, announcing the decision that i am pulling around 3%, which places democracy at risk. it's not clear what pennsylvania voters will make of that notion, but it certainly one thing that you have to consider, along with what they see from the two main candidates tonight, in a race that could decide the control of the senate and perhaps congress for the next two years. what is true as well as the voters nationwide have more factors to weigh than in most midterms. not just the economy, or all of the other domestic and foreign challenges at the moment, but things never seen before, like armed civilians in camouflage, and tactical gear, looking at polling places in arizona. candidates saying that they will on the consider the outcome legitimate if they win. we will have new reporting a little bit later on the alleged voter intimid

oz closed the gap but fetterman is still ahead.se of the momentum two weeks before election day? >> i think democrats are still sticking by fetterman's side. i haven't talked to many democrats that have at least openly concerns about the stroke recovery. but, of course, you know, they know it's there. they know it is looming over the issue. talking to republicans, i you this that's where the momentum for oz is obviously coming from that, the center, and they're warming up to him. earlier in the campaign, he was, you know, in a heated presume airy. i think he sort of bridged those gaps that may have been there from the primary going forward. he's managed to walk the line of maga and moderate. and sort of coalescing the republicans around him. and so i think that he's having a moment. he found things that work talking about crime and inflation. if he sticks to that, he's going to continue narrowing the gap. i expect it to be close. >> republican voters tend to come home in the final weeks of a cam pawn. we're seeing that with oz. the

he won his primary much more easily than oz did. mastriano is a much more extreme figure from the far right. an election denier. a leading election denier who was at the capitol on january 6, although he says he did not go into the building. he says that he would ban abortion with no exceptions whsoever. he's tried to kind of walk that back, but in other tes he's reinforced it. and that does appear to be his posion. and he has really done no outreach to voters who are outside of his original base of support. he pretty much speaks only to very far-right media. his events are, until very recently, largely closed, and so he's only speaking to people who already support him. so there is even a significant segment of republicans, more moderate republicans and swing voters that are just not coming around to mastriano. and importantly, we talk about tv spending, he has not run a single ad on television and that's hard to win in a state that's as large as pennsylvania without being on television. shapiro has spent over $20 million on televi

oz. >> first of all, mika under the weather, actually means she's going to probably only run seven miles this morning instead of nine. so her devgs of under the weather is a little bit different than ours. you know, it's very interesting last night i wrote something that was very obvious. dr. oz is very slick, a slick guy who doesn't happen to fit pennsylvania. he made statements i know cause great concerns to people in pennsylvania. especially where, in the words of charlie pierce, he wanted the parks and recreation people to make decisions on the local level for abortions. i don't know how that's going to play in scranton. probably not well. and then you had, of course, fetterman, who's struggling. he's struggling with the effects of his stroke. he suffered in may. you know, i said, it's very obvious he is impaired. his ability to communicate sim paired. and -- and the question is, you -- you now -- pennsylvania voters have a couple choices, and i'm curious, jake sherman what you think.

sure, there were some answers that were poor on the part of oz, i thought oz looked slick, but fetterman was terrible and you just have to say that. the issue now and you and bianna addressed this, this is my pennsylvania mail-in ballot. i have not yet mailed it in. but half of those voting by mail in the commonwealth already have voted. today is the 26th of october, it's so damn late and maybe the cake has already been baked. the one thing we all ought to be able to agree on, there should have been several debates, it's the most significant race in the country. the idea that there was one debate, candidly it was hard for some people to find it and others were shut out because of an issue with verizon fios. so for a whole host of reasons imola meanting the fact that this was it and it was only 60 minutes long. so i wish there had been more. so many people are voting based on what they want in terms of control of the senate or control of the house and overlooking their own local candidates. example, it's reported that another herschel walker accuser is about to come forward. a lot of repu
