it's moving east toward the resort town of palm springs. in just a past few hours, the fire has grown to 22 square miles and is burning an estimated 1,000 acres an hour. the latest update puts the blaze at just 20% contained. local officials have ordered nearly 2,000 people out of the area. 26 homes have already been destroyed. at least one man has suffered serious burns. and five firefighters have also been injured with heat exhaustion. they'll be off the job for at least 24 hours. >>> the multistate manhunt for james lee dimaggio has taken yet another dramatic turn. authorities now believe the man suspected of kidnapping 16-year-old hannah anderson and her 8-year-old brother ethan may be armed with homemade explosives. the two children have been missing since sunday when their mother's body was discovered in a burned log cabin-style home. police found a second body in the charred house that has yet to be identified. however, they do believe it may be ethan's. in a statement thursday, police asked the public not to approach dimaggio's blui

can tell you, scorched through about nine square miles so far, the town of banning, 20 miles west of palmprings. the latest on the so-called silver fire. >> reporter: we are reporting to you from the southwestern end of california, 18 miles west of palm springs. this is the silver fire and it has quickly charred some 6,000 acres, injuring two firefighters and a resident. 15 structures have been destroyed. the fire started as only a few hundred acres, but quickly grew to thousands within the matter of a few hours. firefighters knew at that point that they had a demon on their hands. homeowners watched everything that they had burned, some even tried to use garden hoses to fight the flames, giving those who watched a level of the desperation here. with night fall, firefighters tried to level the playing field with some help from mother nature in the form of cooler temperatures. the hope here is that progress made overnight will continue throughout the day today. now, there have been some new evacuation orders, a mandatory order is now in place for portions of the state, as well as neighbori

a fast moving wildfire in southern california moves closer to palm springs. have an update on containment. and. how oakland streets may be somewhat safer tonight. we'll tell you why. more news is next. firefighters are making progress on a major wildfire in southern california. the silver fire in riverside county has burned almost thirty thousand square miles and destroyed twenty-six homes. seven firefighters have been injured in the blaze, and many more people have been ordered to evacuate in the area of banning near interstate ten. the fire is now about forty- five percent contained, according to riverside county fire officials. however they worry that warmer weather and strong santa anna winds could fuel the fire as it makes its way east toward palm springs. on friday, governor jerry brown declared a state of emergency in riverside county, making it possible for residents affected by the fire to receive federal aid. evacuation orders have been temporarily lifted in poppet flats, cabazon, mt. edna, and snow creek. >> jacqueline: gradual breaks of sunshine,
