what about the peninsula? you have 56 in palo alto and dalie city, 53. when that kicks up, each though it's not that strong, it will make 52 in the embarcadero feel like 40 so take the jacket to san francisco. and for the north bay, 58 in mill valley and 58 expected in novato. i want to focus in on the river flooding that we have had. the only river still at flood stage is the russian river at guerneville. we saw jodi hernandez reporting there earlier. the water is still very high. it is currently right at flood stage and 32 feet, but as we head through friday's forecast and saturday, it drops below flood stage and that really is some of the best news we've heard all week long. flooding rains here meant sierra snow and we're doing phenomenally well right now. 152% of normal is the snow water equivalent of 21.8 inches. on the extended forecast, dry weather not only for friday and for saturday, for saturday, sunday and monday, we cloud up next tuesday and then we possibly could get rainfall in here next wednesday and thursday. so far this storm system comi

let's take a look at the peninsula commute. traffic slowing down on the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city that's 880 to 101. that will take you about 15 to 20 minutes now. and also in hayward, we have this crash from earlier southbound 880 before industrial parkway. the crash is cleared but a lot of residual backup here all the way to 238 in san leandro and traffic is moving at just 20 miles per hour on the way to highway 92. that's the san mateo bridge. so i definitely suggest you consider mass transit this morning and for the rest of the week, there are wet roads out there causing dangerous conditions so bart, ace train, muni and caltrain are all on time. i'll send it to you. >> all right, roqui. thank you. >>> later today, the mayor of oakland is expected to officially announce the city's new police chief. she would be the department's first female chief. anne makovec has been looking into her background and joins us with more. >> reporter: this is significant because this would be a woman in charge of a departmen

there's a high wind advisory across the span into the peninsula.into belmont that crash, southbound 101 before ralston avenue a solo car crash and a spinout and it has an interesting series of events here so it's the solo car crash spinout happened sideways in the left lane. chp a lot of responses to this because the lights were out on the car so it was very dark out there. could have been a very dangerous situation and to avoid a second accident fire crews made it there on time to light up the area and protect the vehicles. so chp made it on scene and says the vehicle is damaged, everyone is okay and they are clearing it. if you are heading out into the south bay you're looking good on 101, 280 and 87. that's your traffic. i'll send it to you. >> all right, roqui. thank you. >>> the storm is causing some problems for drivers. right now, a road in san francisco is closed because of a possible rockslide. kpix 5's anne makovec is live near glen canyon park where crews are working right now. anne. >> reporter: yeah. very precarious situation here near

now we have the peninsula drying out nicely but the damage is done. and we have anticipate delays at sfo up to one hour on some arriving flights rain is falling around the marina district back in through bayview district at this time. but again this is a tail end of this system. we have yet another area of low pressure tapping into topical moisture increasing winds out of the south and southeast 20 to 30 that's affecting us through the mid-morning and intensifying through afternoon. mostly cloudy veering out from the kpix studios towards the east. temperatures yesterday at this hour at 32 degrees in santa rosa. 38 in livermore and today replaced with 40s all due to the south and southeast winds. now increasing 15 in oakland increased four miles per hour over the last 15 minutes. 13 at sfo winds are light across the north bay but will be increasing. temperatures a little more mild today into the 50s. and heavy rain gusty winds heading this way and we will track the incoming system together but right now back over to you. >> all right roberta. >>> the w

another wave moving in from the peninsula. as we get a closer look where the showers are now, you may have heard claps of thunder, flashes of lightning. that activity has since calmed down. we look at the heavy rainfall through los altos. evergreen, it is still pouring. you will be out here within the next few minutes. if you're following me on facebook and twitter, let me know how things are where you are. looking at the timeline of what else we're expecting as we go through the day. by 10:30, still spotty showers and possibly a few more thunderstorms in the forecast with some strong winds. 2:30, we're still seeing some rain coming down. and even the evening commute will be wet. until we start to the see a few more breaks in this activity later tonight into tomorrow. inch and a quarter to two inches in the north bay. heavy rain in the sonoma area, petaluma where there is a flash flood warning domestic e. for the south bay, a possibility of anywhere from three to four inches of rain. all of that rainfall and also strong winds

michelle, i'll send it to you. >>> strong winds and high tides are expected around the peninsula. and the wet conditions come just after crews in pacifica cleaned up major storm damage along highway 1. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is live in pacifica with more on their concerns. anne >> reporter: the rain just picked up here along the coast of pacifica. the good news is that highway 1 is reopened this morning. we have several hills and cliffs in the area that are in dangle falling this morning as the ran up continues to fall. that's what we saw happen yesterday with this mud slide along highway 1 near rain nadel mar. mud dirt and rocks on the northbound labors and between cleaning up and shoring up the hillside it took almost 25 hours to get the lanes reopened and there aren't a lot options for getting around highway 1 unfortunately, so traffic backed up along the peninsula coast all day long. crews put a concrete barrier between the section of the hillside and the highway to try to prevent another roadblock but preventing the land from sliding is impossible. the ground is saturat

the wiggest problems were in marin county and along the peninsula. at one point, more than 10,000 customers were without electricity. the crews have been out there trying to get the power back on. the biggest local outages right now are if in gill roy. you can track the rain or the snow up in the sierra anytime. >>> oakland mayor libby chaff has reportedly hired a woman for the new police chief. ann kirkpatrick would become oakland's first ever female chief. the chicago police department hired kirkpatrick last june to spear heed reform efforts. she has been a candidate for police chief in chicago and seattle. oakland has been without a chief since june when the city went through three chiefs in a week and a half. some of it's officers have been embroiled in a sex scandal with an underage prostitute. >>> a news conference is expected today by west valley community college in saratoga about a pedestrian hit last night by a charter bus on the school's campus. it happened about 5:00 p.m. reports say the bus was on the west end were to the campus when a w

if you are heading into the peninsula here's a live look at the san mateo bridge from 880 to 101, that should be a smooth ride across the way. now to our problem this morning the altamont pass coming out of tracy you're moving at 50 miles per hour and north flynn road at 42 miles per hour. we have had multiple accidents this morning from potholes so westbound 580 before north flynn road there's a pothole there that is causing trouble in the right lanes so if you are head there is stay way from the right lane. otherwise good through livermore to the dublin interchange. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge from 580 in san rafael to the toll plaza that will take you 15 minutes. >>> nearly three dozen people are out of their apartments after a fire in concord. the flames were so intense children were jumping out of windows to escape. this is the scene at the lakeside apartments. one unit caught fire. then it quickly spread to several others. firefighters say they had to rescue two children. >> two females have been transported to a local hospital to get checked out. now it's headed to the delta to the peninsula.gain this initial wave is just a layering, 280 and 101, and moving to the east quickly. that's one characteristic of this storm. it's a fast mover ushered along by strong winds. wind advisory for the bay area. south winds 35 to 45 miles an hour, higher gusts in higher elevations. winter storm warnings in the mountains, snow and gusty winds with snow level at 4500 feet with 6 to 18 inches up at the passes and winds to 60 miles an hour. there will be travel delays. back in the bay area, we have rain heading east in the early going. and then we get a break and then the big thrust coming this afternoon. temperatures in the mid-40s in the early going this morning. futurecast lay it is out. the computer model unreliable little thing that it is is showing that we have about 1:00 in the afternoon the main band begins in the north bay. watch what happens this afternoon. it all begins to ease south so that by the evening commute tonight we have widely scattered but in some plays heavy rain and r

the driver is making it okay. 55 degrees in the peninsula tri-valley 52 degrees. still light showers. 49 in the north bay. 42 in san francisco. as we get a look at the radar and where some of the rain is is still coming down in the north bay, mainly petaluma and farther south, seeing light rain at this point. also pockets of heavy rain will still be possible. a few of those scattered showers moving through the peninsula right now will make the roads wet once again. we keep an eye on our area rivers and creeks. flash flood warnings continue for the san lorenzo river. napa river has crested. it will be below flood stage there. the russian river will be above flood stage throughout the day and not going below until early tomorrow morning. it will be rising up to 37.6 feet. a lot of concerns there. as we go hour by hour, off and on spotty showers. many more breaks. a chance for sun to dry out. it will be enough to create wet roadways into this evening and early tomorrow. so we're not completely done until this system winds down and moves off to the east. that will hap

for the peninsula and the east bay, it's a lot of orange and yellow. you can see up in the key here thissal bring us a half inch to t-75 inch for the peninsula and east bay and we'll see the same for the south bay. santa cruz mountains could range from 1 to 2 inches if the wednesday storm again at this point. we will be watching the russian river in guerneville. it looks like this may not get close to flood stage till the upcoming weekend, probably 27.6 feet. flood stage is 32 feet. we'll be monitoring that extremely closely again for this upcoming weekend for possibly some more river flooding. let's break it down for you again on the extended forecast. we are dry through tomorrow. our next storm arrives on wednesday. half inch to just over 1 inch is possible. we'll get a break on thursday. then our other storm arrives on friday. then by saturday a little break. and then we get our third system of the week arriving by sunday. at least there's some areas of intermittent drying in between the storm systems than could save us from some of those large, lar

you can see san francisco now really getting hit hard, especially along the peninsula sfo, san mateo, all of those areas, we are seeing very heavy rainfall this morning. now here's what you can expect as we head through the morning hours. 6:00 you can see we're still going to have some very heavy rainfall, especially in the fremont area, san jose as well. by 8:00, you can see another wave of this heavy rain coming to us. it's going to be san francisco, san mateo, really most of the peninsula is going to be covered by this rainfall. we're going to get a little bit of a break, though, for folks in fremont and for san jose. but it's going to be pretty consistent, though, throughout most of the morning. by 9:45, you can see more of that heavy rainfall coming to us through san francisco. even parts of the north bay. most of it already heading out towards the brentwood area, getting into the valley. you can see even by noon, we're still going to have the scattered showers with patches of it being very heavy. it's going to be lightened up, though, once we get past the morning commute. but ag

look at 101 going up the peninsula. backed up from san mateo, from san mateo all the way into san francisco. yes, that is a very long way to be stuck in traffic trying to get to the city. 280 also very slow as well. 8:03. let's go back to alex who is near the russian river in sonoma county. thousands of people have been urged to evacuate. alex is in guerneville. alex. >> reporter: sal, good morning to you. and there's the possibility that hundreds of homes could flood here in the guerneville area. the rigs river right now that i'm standing in, right now it is about two feet above flood stage. so about 24 feet or so. it is expected to crest at about 36 feet sometime tomorrow. we're here at johnson's beach this morning. a pretty dramatic scene. as we pan over to the right, you can see someone's suv stuck in the water here as a result of the flooding here from the russian river. now, to put this in perspective, folks have been through this before. this is not something that is unheard of up here. but still precautions are
