they need quiet when they're listening for that pinging.nd one of my worries is there are so many ships out there. if you remember with the malaysian air situation, if in some cases, they thought they were hearing the ship they were on and it was nearby ships. >> david, let me stay with you for one second. how confident are you that investigators will find the black boxes fairly quickly? >> absolutely positive they'll find the black boxes, fairly quickly, relative term. but i'm expecting a few days to a week. depending on the weather conditions out there. but they've got the right assets. if they've got the right plan and the right talent, it should be fairly quickly. you don't have underwater mountains to worry about, playing games with the pinging sounds. it's a fairly quick trip to the bottom. so it should go by fairly quickly. >> david, chad, tim, thank you so much. flight 8501 went down in a part of the world where air traffic is on the rise. is the region ready to safely deal with the volume of planes and people? we'll talk about that

is it surprising to you there have been no pings, nothing received? >> no, it really isn't. i wish it was surprising. we learned from 370 and many other accidents that the emergency locator beacons, some go off on the impact, and some go off on exposure to water. but often they don't work and they don't work for a variety of reasons. if the plane is in deep water, they wont be able to pick up the pings from the water locaters. sometimes they're damaged in the crash impact. sometimes they find they just don't go off at all. and for the pingers that on the black boxes, they will need to use side scan sonar, or listening devices after they can locate the area in which to look. so nobody's looked for those yet, but the emergency locaters, they would have heard if they'd gone off. >> well, quick break, but on the other side -- quick break, but i want to talk on the other side, you say they often don't work. is there something that needs to change here going forward with the technology? we'll take a quick break. more of our special coverage when we return. sea captain: there's a n

. >> the pings.urvivors always comes first. but just as important is the search for answers. the why and the how. often those answers are found in the black box. since the '60s, all commercial airplanes have been required to have one on board. now the name is a little misleading because they're actually orange. and when we're talking about a black box we're talking about two different boxes, one being the cockpit voice recorder the other being the data recorder. they weigh anywhere from 20 to 30 pounds. they can survive almost anything. forces 3400 gs. they're waterproof and they can save recorded data for two years, and it's a lot of data. the cockpit voice recorder records the crew's conversation and background noise. by listening to the ambient sounds experts can discover whether a stall took place and the speed the plane was traveling. when these are cross-referenced with conversations, they can help searchers locate the crash site. then there's the data recorder. it records several thousand disc
