let's go live to cnn's randi kaye. she just spoke with the district attorney there and he's the one who you asked about, joyce mitchell's husband's role in this whole thing. what did he tell you? >> reporter: we spoke with andrew wiley, the district attorney here and we spoke about lyle mitchell. he did confirm that joyce mitchell's husband is being looked at for his role in this escape plan. i asked him directly if he's involved and he said they are getting information through interviews and from other sources that he not only could have been involved but possibly also had knowledge of it as well. they have information about his role. they said -- he said that they have information about what part in this he may have played. and also brooke he works at the prison. not only does lyle mitchell work maintenance at the prison but he works maintenance here in the block where joyce mitchell works and where she apparently got to know very well both of these fugitives, david sweat and richard matt. david sweat was moved out o

randi kaye, cnn, new york. >> how exactly did these two men manage to escape? how have they managed to avoid capture for this many days? joining me now is former federal inmate larry levine, the found other of wall street prison consultants. thank you for being with us. this is clearly a brazen prison escape. you were in prison for ten years. figuring out an escape plan, is that something often talked about? >> every inmate, everybody in custody wants to go home. that's the goal. everybody has an out date. these guys, they really didn't have an out date. they knew they were never going home. it's still a dream. you can see inmates that are walking along the fence line, that are timing the guards driving around in the truck. so it is on everybody's mind. how the hell can i get out of here? >> and, you know, police are looking at this prison worker, joyce mitchell. how easy is it to develop a special relationship with a prison worker? >> well, you are working with people sometimes for years on end. and the staff becomes complacent. you get in to, you know, friend

our randi kaye in milton vermont. you got to vermont couple hours age the investigators were there before you. have they picked up any sign or trail of the killers? >> reporter: no sign yet, john. officials are stressing they believe they could have planned to come here. but there is no official sighting of the two escapees in vermont yet. i can tell you what a different story here in this state. compared to dannemora, in new york state where the prison is. for days going back and forth through check points. had to take a state from upstate new york to cross into vermont. they didn't ask for id to get on the ferry nor did they ask when we got off the ferry. didn't have to go through check points to get here to the lakeside setup. so i know officials are saying they're securing the border. tonight, john we haven't seen evidence of that. i can tell you they're in hot pursuit of the two guys. we saw it today from the air firsthand. >> reporter: from the air, what authorities are up against is clear. so many places for th

here's cnn's randi kaye. >> reporter: this is the man investigators are now looking at, lyle mitchell, the husband of joyce mitchell. she's the prison employee now charged for her role in the escape plan. lyle mitchell works at the prison, too. >> he's working at the facility. he was in the maintenance department in the tailor shop area. >> reporter: the very same tailor block where his wife worked and where both fugitives once worked. it's where they all got to know each other. what's still unclear is what lyle mitchell's role may have been in helping convicted killers richard matt and david sweat escape. >> we have information that's coming through, through interviews, just through our investigation, that he possibly could have been involved, or at least had knowledge of what was happening. >> reporter: any idea what his role might have been? >> we have information on what part of his role would be, and you know, i hate to keep saying this to everyone, but this is an investigation that not only is focusing on, obviously, taking matt and sweat back into custody, but we're pursuing ot

the latest on all of it from our randi kaye, who joins us. let's begin with the search area. shifting again. do they think these guys are still in the area of the prison? >> reporter: they do, anderson, and they're certainly hoping so. they've already searched 16 square miles, about 10,000 acres. the area is shifting, and that really is based on the 1,400 leads that they have now. the information that they're getting from those leads is telling them to shift to a different area. but still here nearby the prison, they're shifting the roadblocks, they're shifting the k9 units. the lead investigator told us they don't have any hard evidence that these guys have left town, that they're not in this area. they don't have any reports of a stolen car that they may have taken to get out of town. they're working off the evidence that they have, which tells them that they are still right here. and one last thing, richard matt, one of the escapees, his m.o., his style when he has escaped prison before is to lay low until the time is right to make a run for it. >> do investigators think t

finally, prosecutors pointed to an interview that merritt did with cnn's own randi kaye before he wasn that interview he said he is "definitely the last person that joseph mcstay saw on this earth." also a bad fact. time to bring in my lawyer, cnn legal analyst danny cevallos and hln legal analyst joey jackson. so those are the prosecutor's facts but we haven't heard from anybody on the defense side of things yet. can you stomach a defense when you hear little children aged three and four had their skulls smashed, danny? >> you have to. that's our job. our job is to take a horrible set of facts and challenge the prosecution to prove each and element of their case beyond a reasonable doubt. and the reason that we're hearing so much about the prosecution ice case right now is that we're really only at the preliminary hearing stage. that's when the prosecution has to make out their case, not beyond a reasonable doubt but to the lesser standard of probable cause. which means that the prosecution's challenge is to show as much of their hand strategically but just enough to have the case he

here is randi kaye. >> reporter: they are names are jake and lucy.h the mcadam family, who adopted both of them. but now both of these dogs, family pets, are staring down a possible death sentence, accused of killing a neighborhood cat. >> had your dogs ever harmed or killed an animal before? >> no. >> had they ever been aggressive before? >> no. they've bit anything. >> the pike's peak ranger society says it has no choice, the dogs are considered dangerous under colorado law. so the district attorney has filed criminal misdemeanor charges against caitlin mcadam and is threatening to euthanize the dogs. this is all because someone thinks they saw mcadam's dogs kill that cat back in january. caitlin and her husband had no idea anything was wrong until animal control showed up at their house to seize the family's dogs. she says her dogs didn't kill the cat. >> they thought we could go to the humane society, prove that and get them back. >> she could not have been more wrong. caitlin was later told there would have to be a probable cause hearing to dete
