so cnn's randi kaye has been following this all for us, and she is outside of that courtroom. we have heard so far this morning from murdaugh's son? >> the defense is doing exactly what they wanted to do. this is why they put buster murdaugh on the stand. he is the only surviving son of alex murdaugh, and he has been on the stand for about an hour. they have been talking about hunting and guns. they went turkey hunting and hog hunting, and there were two weapons used in the killings, and so the defense was quick to point out that one of paul murdaugh's weapons have been missing and one of the weapons have gone missing, and a ballistic ekxpert testified tha one of the shell casings would have come from a family weapon, and that is why it is important for one of paul's guns to have gone missing and raised doubt there. listen to this. >> how about paul, how was he about securing guns? >> not good. >> what do you mean? >> paul left guns on the property more than anybody else. sometimes he would use my gun and leave it and i would have to track it down. >> did paul carry guns in his

cnn's randi kaye is covering the trial for us in south carolina. porter: well, wolf, they're trying to help the jury connect the dots on the firearms and the finances of alex murdaugh. first of all, for the firearms expert who testified late this afternoon, he discovered shell casings all over the property, not only at the murder scene but all over the murdaugh property. and he then matched those casings to casings from weapons that he says were often used at the murdaugh home that would have come from the murdaugh home. now he does say it's inconclusin, they didn't know if they collected the murder weapons because they didn't seize as many guns from the murdaugh home. but he did say that these casings would have come from weapons that had been used on the property before because there were so many of them and they were so widely spread out. on the issue of the finances, the prosecution is trying to show that alex murdaugh killed his wife and son because he was trying to distract from these alleged financial schemes that he was involved in. he was a

cnn's randi kaye is outside the courthouse in south carolina. can you break this down for us?hat a day here in court already. we've just been watching this video, the third interview that alex murdaugh did with lead s.l.e.d. agent david owewon. this was done in august of 2021, just a few months after the murders. during this interview which is quite tense and contentious at times, alex murdaugh is crying at times. he does get to ask his own questions about the investigation as well. there was a key moment when the investigator asked him about why he was wearing different clothing late at night after he called 911 after the murders than he had been wearing earlier in the night on a snapchat video sent by his son, paul. watch this. >> when i met you that night, you were in shorts and a t-shirt. at what point in the evening did you change clothes? >> i'm not sure. >> before dinner or after dinner. >> no, it would have been -- what time of day was that? i would have thought i had already changed. >> that would have been 7:30, 8:00. >> i guess i changed when i got back to the house

cnn's randi kaye is live from outside the courthouse in south carolina. utely, victor. it's been fascinating to listen to him. a lot of details. we're talking about investigators analyzing data, and one of the takeaways is when he left his house at 9:06 p.m., it's believed the victims were dead by then. as he was driving to go to his mother's house, as he said, he slowed down, according to the gps data on his car, and he slowed down at the very spot investigators say they found maggie murdaugh's phone in the woods. so this data suggests that perhaps he slowed down to dispose of that phone. also, at some point during the night, he's driving around much faster than he is at other times during the day, about 81 miles per hour was his top speed. there were also questions about the time he spent at his mother's house that night. he's been a real sticking point between the defense and the prosecution. here's what the data showed. >> the data points for the suburban, it looks like it went toward -- a little bit in to the grass closer to the woodline over here. th

cnn's randi kaye is outside the courthouse. randi, good to see you again.ough what's happened so far today. >> reporter: they were talking quite a bit more about this snapchat video that was shared in court with the jury. this is a video that was taken from paul murdaugh's cell phone. now, this video was uploaded at 7:39 on june 7, 2021. that is the night of the murders. it was sent at 7:56 p.m. now, the video shows, as you will see, it's a video of a tree that's falling down on the property. alex murdaugh is standing in the video. paul murdaugh shot the video. but what's significant is what alex murdaugh is wearing in that video. he's wearing long pants and a long blue shirt. i'll tell you why that's significant in just a moment. but take a listen to a representative from snapchat who testified today about the authenticity of it first. >> what is on the contents of that cd? >> it's a video of a subject near a tree. and it's a short video with some audio. >> did you determine in reviewing the records whether that account sent out that particular video? >> y

cnn's randi kaye joins us from outside the courtroom. tell us about this timeline.alex murdaugh to the window when they believe his wife and son were killed? >> reporter: very close, jim and kristen. so that's why the defense really has its challenges set up for them this week as we prepare for buster murdaugh to take the stand. first of all n that timeline we know that maggie and paul murdaugh's phones, their cell phones, locked for good, ceased all activity at 8:49 p.m. that's a problem for the defense because eight witnesses have testified that alex murdaugh was at the murder scene around the time of the murders at 8:44 p.m. there was a video extracted from paul murdaugh's cellphone that was recorded at 8:44. he has denied to investigators that he was ever there earlier in the night, not until he found his wife and son dead, but eight people now say they hear his voice on that cellphone recording. we know also from the timeline he left the house at 9:06 p.m., said he went to his mother's home for about an hour, but the caregiver has told the jury that he was only
