elizabeth: listening live to governor rick scott. he is in winter park, orlando. he was briefing reporters there for about 20 minutes and he said, basically the storm is here. that's the first thing he said when he approached reporters. at least 25,000 people in florida have lost power and as you know, it hasn't made landfall in the united states yet. and he did make one statement there could be up to 15 feet of impact, storm surge above ground level. the national weather service says anywhere between 8 and 12 and obviously he has sources on the ground so he's basically telling folks they're in an evacuation area. now is the time to go because once the storm does make landfall and approaches closer to those coastal communities. rescue workers will not be able to go in and save you. he did also mention, obviously, they are still looking for volunteers and they're still opening shelters, and they have about 320 shelters open at this moment. there's at least 50,000, if not more in shelters and there are at least 70 opening today. so, if you're in an evacuation area,

. >> to tallahassee and governor rick scott. >> hurricane irma made landfall at 9:10 a.m. as a category 4 storm. the eye of this powerful storm is now 80 miles south of naples and approaching naples/ft. myers area later this afternoon. a vast majority of the state is experiencing extreme winds. it will up pact highly populated communities and leaving destruction in its wake. our east coast, south florida is experiencing increased wind gusts, coastal flooding and dangerous seas. we will feel the impact late don't and early monday. there are areas in south florida and the keys have had up to 12 inches of rain. across the state we can see an additional 8 to 15 inches of rain. the vast majority is under a hurricane warning. millions of floridians are being impacted by this storm. this is a serious threat of -- there is a serious threat of significant storm surge flooding along the entire west coast of florida. and this has increased to 15 feet of impact above ground level in southwest florida. tampa will see is a surge of 5 to 8 feet. the big bend area will see a surge of 4 to

florida governor rick scott asked for the declaration earlier in the day.. in a news conference, he said florida is "working very closing with the federal government to make sure floridians have the resources they need." meanwhile, trump praised the relief efforts so far. florida governor rick scott joins us oun the phone. governor thanks, as usual, for joining us. looking at pictures of long lines of homestead, florida, just outside miami. these lines are people trying to get into a shelter ahead of the storm where do the evacuations stand right now? >> still evacuating this part of the south and we know the storm is coming up. and evacuating other parts of the state. just receiving tampa to go down to fort myers. an area of tampa is leaving now. we have shelters. i shut down all the schools in the entire state to add more shelters. i've asked for volunteers. needing more volunteers, getting more every day. opening many shelters as is necessary and i tell everybody, you cannot wait. you've got to -- if you're in an evacuation zone, get out now. if you're going to leave your home, you need to get going now, because as this gets closer it's going to get harder to get where you want to go. and i care about the whole state. i love them, but we can't put first responders' in harm's way to save you. so take care of your family. we all love our famili
