this is the roanoke airport in virginia.(jr stone) double digit snowfall amounts, treacherous driving conditions and power outages are what's left in the wake of a massive winter storm pummeling parts of the southeast, with hours and inches of snow yet to come. omar jimenez has more. a dire description of winter weather....north carolina is in the cold icy grip of a mammoth winter storm... the state's governor, roy cooper, declaring a state of emergency as snow, sleet and ice have blanketed the tar heel state....and warning residents to stay home -- not to be fooled by the beauty in the snowfall. snow and ice can make the scene outside your window look like a holiday card, but don't be fooled. this storm is treacherous especially if you try to drive in it. the state's highway patrol responding to over 500 collisions and over one- thousand calls for service. north carolina's dot spending hours working to clear snowfall pile-ups and iced- over roads. hazardous conditions at the north carolina airports resulted in thousands of

roanoke, richmond, virginia among the high totals we've seen in the month of december.s, trees coming down as well. we had a quarter million customers even at this hour without power right now across virginia and the carolinas. system on the move with it, still a risk here for some ice again, and some wet weather that's been in place. in fact, when you take a look at the precipitation totals, parts of georgia, parts of alabama on into mississippi, significant rainfall just on the cusp of what would have been significant snowfall. of course, it was exactly 12 months ago that places northern georgia and alabama picked up significant snows. temperatures there sitting now into the middle and upper 30s at this hour, even down on the gulf coast. mobile across the panama city, 10 to 20 degrees below average for this time of year, into the low to mid 40s at this hour. we do expect the trend here to want to warm up a little bit. in fact, the average this time of year in atlanta is 55. aiming for 43 come monday afternoon. raleigh at 38 and 55 is more in line with normal temperatu

it's really going to be from roanoke and richmond south wards that we're going to get accumulating snowble in winston-salem to charlotte and raleigh. when you head to the mountains, that's 12-18 inches of snow. the mountains of north carolina get a little bit of snow in the upstate of south carolina but not a lot. you're going to be a little too warm. may get a little more icing. for today, airports, rain, dallas/ft. worth. we could have major problems there because of heavy rain, thunderstorms and delays. on the roads with the heavy rain and the flooding concerns late today into tomorrow that's why we have major travel issues possible. on saturday, the airport problems spread from memphis to atlanta through new orleans. we'll begin to improve in the areas of houston. that will be in the afternoon. of course, driving mostly in the rain. we don't really see too much snowy travel on the highways. the only problem may be amarillo here heading out on 40 or through the ozarks. sunday a lot of rain in atlanta. charlotte and raleigh major delays. highest impacts are the flooding threat today i

records set in richmond, roanoke, virginia, were among the highest snowfall totals in the month of decemberre seeing in the past 24 hours. of course all of this spells major, major disruptions at the airports. almost 1800 flights canceled. much of which came out of the charlotte airport. a thousand in charlotte. upwards of 3,000 of flights delayed because of the rough weather that's in place. still a quarter million customers without power to the carolinas extending up into virginia at this hour. temperatures running a few degrees above the freezing mark, even around the panhandle of florida there. you cross into florida, 45 degrees what it is currently in panama city. these are some 10, 15, some cases 15 degrees below what is average this time of year. as far as high temps are concerned, a high of 38 degrees. that, of course, is above freezing. that allows anything that did fall to begin to melt and that's the concern because as we go on into the overnight hours of tonight and eventually into tuesday morning, going to begin to see some of those want to refreeze again. high temps running ju
