. >> i'm sam brock. we will be with you every step of the way now. >> i feel like i have been through a lot of the south bay. taking back roads, taking a lot of different directions to get here this morning. like a lot of people will be doing. >> we had a complete closure. a live shot of 101 just north of the 680/2080 interchange sam was talking about. look at the lights right here. they are traveling north on 101. you're forced off the freeway just before you get to 280/680. a few cars heading southbound. i'll assume they are chp and caltrans. i'll give you any updates on any openings. anything north of the dumbarton bridge, completely fine. we had the closure for niles canyon that we continue to follow. full closure for both directions of 101. it is is a critical portion of the south pay. this is where we see the first slowing of the morning. we will see slowing on the approach coming up in the area. over toward 280 or 87 southbound. use that corner here as your workaround to avoid the stretch of 101.

i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. this rain is coming down hard. >> it looks like it is not going anywhere any time soon. that will be the main problem as we go through the day. waves of heavy rain and brief breaks in between. we're not seeing a lot of that except for the south bay. in san francisco right now, or you're seeing the rain come down quite heavily. we have the stormranger, the red beam on the radar that gives us a very detailed view of what's happening. in the north bay, we see pockets of yellows and dark greens showing very intense rain. as we get a close look at san francisco, you see a steady downpour towards oakland, owe rain da and east where you see the pockets of the heavy rain there as well as discovery bay and hayward. but the rain kind of drops off as you go through fremont. and then just south of parts of the peninsula as you go around palo alto. the rain is taking a break for now. we will continue to monitor all of this. mike is tracking the positions on the roadways. >>> trees across the bay.

i'm sam brock alongside kari hall and mike inouye. as we see, there are major problems in terms of folks and their commute. and their public safety as well. let's talk about these closures. >> a live look as you showed a couple of seconds ago. this is 101. first you notice the roadway completely empty. that has happened at any bay area freeway at any time. this coming up towards 680 and 280. usually this is the spot where we talk you about the first burst of traffic to san hoe is say. do not worry. this is not a fire. this is industrial. this is exhaust coming off. this is the 280/680 coming off the golf course. this stretch of closure here until it reopens your alternate is 280 and 87. they will take you past all the closures. 87 typically is crowded during the morning commute. this is going to ripple down the south bay until this reopens. in addition to this full closure of highway 101, which is very, very unusual for any of that to have any problems, we are looking at farther south through morgan hill. yesterday we covered this as
