david samson is still on the job. as recently as a week and a half ago, christie says he strongly and firmly stood behind david samson. this was in the wake of a number of newspaper editorial boards calling on him to resign. he's a very, very close confidant of governor christie's. this is christie saying this even after we and a number of news organizations have reported on these potential conflicts of interest. >> he's also a powerful figure in his own right in new jersey as far as i understand. a former attorney general in new jersey. he has this very connected law firm that's financially done very well particularly under the christie administration as you at wnyc has reported. and the thing that i think hasn't seemed all that understandable for people who are new to this cast of character through this scandal is why governor christie would stand by him even as he was throwing david wildstein and bill baroni and other allies under the bus? >> some reporting we've done suggests there are even some christie advisers

and so i hope that that's what general samson did.he did in most if not all of those instances. so that is an issue for him to deal with directly. i'm sure he will. i have every faith and trust and confidence in david's integrity, as do people on beat sides of the aisle in the state over the last course of 40 years he has been involved in public life. i'm confident he acquitted himself in a way that was appropriate and ethical. if it turns out there were some instances at weren't handled in that way, that's something we'll deal with. i don't think to get to the core of your question -- i think the core of your question -- you can expect that when you ask people from the private sector to come in and do these jobs, in a part-time, noncompensated way, that you can ask them to give up their private sector life, which they use to support themselves and their families. the way to deal with that is have an effective, robust, conflict systemy folks recuse as appropriate, and it should be attended to with even greater care. drew have a follow

did general samson ever talk you about this? >> as i said in the statement, effective immediately. he called me this afternoon. on the first part of the question, i spoke to general samson on january 8 and asked him what he knew about this, if he had any involvement in it, if he authorized it or had any idea of the planning of it or any of the rest. he said absolutely not. that rang true to me the time not only because of david's reputation for honesty over the course of his career, but also because the role of the chairman of the port authority is not a operational role. it is a supportive role. i would not expect him to be involved in a traffic study of the port authority. in terms of his firm's lack of participation in the investigation by the master group, he thought there would be a compromise if there was an interview. that was the information he gave me at the time and i have no reason not to believe that. again, i think that his role was not central in any of these things or has it been alleged that his role was central in any of these things. those were decisions he had to

context to this exchange and we might learn if there was a meeting between the governor and david samsone releasing these documents? are you glad the committee is taking her to court to try to -- >> as a member of the committee, i think it's important that we get the full picture, that we investigate and try to understand what occurred. do i think that there's a likely scenario that we're going to be sitting there at the same time next year still discussing, you know, what could have been in the e-mails, what could have been in bill stepien's e-mails i think is plausible. i think this is a legal issue that is going to continue for kuwait a long period of time. but as committee members, we had to at least go out and attempt to get the information so that we could try to understand why this occurred and how this occurred. >> the spontaneity is there. whenever you send a text message and text or e-mail, a lot of times you don't think through the whole thing. so what goes through the mind comes up. that's why trying to read between the lines i think it's difficult. we need to get that inform
