san francisco, marin county, and san mateo counties could soon pave the way for high school students to return back to class and possibly indoor dining. meantime, andrea nakano reports researchers are seeing an increase in coronavirus variants across the state, and there are signs it could cause severe disease and could spread more quickly. >> reporter: yes, scientists have seen a high number of the california variant, and counties such as here in alameda, across the bridge in san francisco, and santa clara. this mutation has been here since last may, but a local scientists believe it's now responsible for roughly 50% of the cases. dr. chu has been working in his lab to identify how prevalent this variant may be. he's not the only one. ucsf teamed up with bio hub that looked into cases in san francisco's mission district. >> what we discovered in november is that this variant in the community was about 16% of positive cases. then january 11th through the 27th, it was fully 53%. >> reporter: according to ucsf, the california variant is one of four major ones circulating in the state.
