the contractor did not issue a response. >> scott mcgrew has been keeping his eye on washington. >> andtt, a big day today for neil gorsuch. >> yeah, our next associate chief justice of the united states. gorsuch will be sworn in twice, sam. once in a private ceremony at the supreme court, and then again publicly at the white house rose garden. gorsuch, of course, approved by the u.s. senate after senate republicans changed the rules, chose the so-called nuclear option to push that nomination through. this brings the supreme court back up to its regular strength, and it is a relief for justice elena kagan, who up until today, has been the most junior member of the court. as least experienced, she's in charge of the court's cafeteria. if the judges don't like their lunch, they tell her. she told a law class, one of her accomplishments was the introduction of soft serve ice cream. now this is all neil gorsuch's problem. secretary of state rex tillerson on the move. he's in italy headed to russia later this week. all this comes, of course, as the russians are accused of botching their job

scott mcgrew has been examining the president's first 100 days in office. today, we're on day 74. >> and scott, today is a big one for the president's pick for the supreme court. >> certainly is. the senate committee in charge will almost certainly vote and pass the nomination forward to the full senate. now, what happens after that remains to be seen. neil gorsuch has enough votes to pass, but not enough votes to prevent a filibuster. when the minority party right now the democrats, stop all the business in the senate. that's a filibuster, a tool used by both sides. there is a way around that. the senate republicans who are in charge can change the rules. get rid of the filibuster and put gorsuch in the supreme court. but once you change the rules, you change them for everybody and there's no going back. virtually, democrats will be able to take advantage of the easier pass, and republicans could regret it. that's why they call it the nuclear option. >> and so in the middle of all these other things -- >> the latest asking if hillary clinton ever apologized

scott mcgrew, the embattled united airlines ceo taking a second crack at saying sorry. >> second crack. good morning. i have no doubt oscar munoz is going to be in business school textbooks. a textbook example of what not to be in a crisis, but he is trying to make it better. this comes as the world reacts to the violent removal of a kentucky man from a united flielt out of chicago. this video has been watched millions of times. he issued a second statement yesterday saying, i deeply apologize to the customer forcibly removed and to all the customers aboard. no one should ever be mistreated this way. that is the big change from the ceo first apology when he said the customer had been, quote, reaccommodated. that was not video of somebody being reaccommodated. united has also withdrawn an earlier claim the flight was overbooked. the airline said it wanted the seats for an outbound crew. >> shares of their holdings fell a little more than 1% yesterday. if you dive down into the num r numbers in the reports, it was partly because of predictions united was making about future sales ahead o

scott mcgrew watching for the latest from washington. good morning. >> good morning. laura, on a day we thought we would keep a closer eye on russia, we pivot to north korea. moments ago, the president tweeting, north korea is looking for trouble. if china decides to help, that would be great. if not, we will solve the problem without them. usa. now, what he means by solving it ourselves is deliberately vague. the north korean problem is very different from the syrian problem. north korea has nuclear weapons. seoul, a city of 10 mlg million people, is 35 mile from the dmz. this can't be solved by cruise missiles. russia, so angry about the cruise missile attack on syria, vladimir putin will not meet with our secretary of state, rex tillerson. remember, tillerson and putin know each other very well. this is the first time a russian president has not met with a visiting secretary of state on his first visit. tillerson arrives in moscow in a little more than an hour. there's also confusion over who is setting american policy on syria. we talked about this yesterday. sean

scott mcgrew takes a look at the trump presidency every morning, and the white house at odds with theavy this morning. >> it is. a pucukeural situation. the white house and secretary of defense told us last week that the president had directed "uss carl vinson" and the rest of its battle group towards north korea. a real show of american firepower. this raised fears by north korea and china that the u.s. might launch a pre-emptive strike against northa. president trump said we're sending an armada to the sea of japan. the vinson task force left singapore, the white house said, headed for korea. in fact, the navy said it was actually headed south, which is the wrong direction if you're trying to get to korea, taking parts in a prescheduled training exercise with australia. where it gets sticky is the white house is pointing fingers at the navy saying the navy misinformed the white house. the vinson is now headed, we're told, towards north korea. you know what a rorschach test is? you look at an ink blot. this is a plit rorschach test. it depends on what you see, what side of the politi

scott mcgrew, you say the numbers are even worse than it looks? >> yeah. 98,000 jobs added in the month of march. now that's a bad number by itself, far below estimates, but it gets even worse when you consider it's not even enough to cover the number of 18-year-olds who entered the official job force last month. in that sense it's actually a negative number. so we're looking at these numbers and looking at the numbers from the bureau of labor statistics trying to figure out why in the world estimates were so badly off. we were expecting something much better. now, unemployment is at 4.5%. that's super interesting because it's the lowest it's been in years, dropping a full .2 of a percent. we certainly do expect that's what the white house is going to concentrate on because the actual jobs number is awful. that's what white houses do, all white houses. they find a number that reflerkreflects the best news. mr. trump used to call the numbers fake and he didn't last month when the numbers were really, really good. we'll see what he does this month.

. >> and scott mcgrew, time is running out to get the wall into the budget. >> it is.at's our budget, sam. we'll pay for the wall, not mexico. that wall, which could cost as much as $25 billion, has become a real sticking point in the budget. republicans say we don't have the money. democrat say we don't need it. and predictions say if the wall is in the budget, it won't pass. and the government will have to shut down. there have been several hints from the white house, both in public and in private, the president trump is willing to compromise. time is tight. the deadline to either approve a budget or at least some kind of temporary fix, is friday. president trump's first 100 days come to a close on saturday. president trump will deliver the keynote speech today at the day of rem ceremony marking the holocaust. presidents routinely make that speech. the trump administration has had notable trouble addressing issues surrounding the holocaust. >> the two candidates for french president attended the memorial for the french police officer who was shot on thursday. the isl

. >> scott mcgrew has been examining the president's first 100 days and we're getting close.day is day 95. >> and the first 100 days could end with a government shutdown. >> good morning, about the worst way you could wrap up 100 days, right? it's president trump's desire for that wall on our southern border that could cause the shutdown. trump insists the wall should be part of thet, a budget we pay for, of course, not mexico. and it's going to cost billions. almost nobody in washington thinks this is a good idea. the democrats don't want the wall. the republicans don't want to spend the money. the president, of course, promised over and over and over that the mexican government would pay for that wall. it was one of his main campaign promises. arguably, his biggest campaign promise. all of a sudden, though, we're paying the wall. that sets up this calendar here. on friday, the government shuts down over an argument over a border wall, and then saturday, president trump reaches 100 days. trump's own chief of staff has signaled a compromise might be okay. >> and there's enoug
