let's bring in nbc bay area's scott mcgrew. >> unsubstantiated claims of fraud not only hurts democracy in general but hurts the democratic party. trump, one of the few making the claim that there was fraud in california, he's practically alone. no major voice in his party is claiming our election was fraudulent. no evidence of fraud, but there's nothing wrong with making sure. and certainly, california officials will listen to any and all claims. we saw a few hiccups, like confusion near l.a. over who had already voted, but provisional ballots solved that problem. newsom did better in the recall than he did in his own election in 2018. when you look at maps like this, this may not tell the tale. newsom did much better than what this looks like. the light color indicating counties where voters turned against newsom. but keep in mind, land doesn't tell the tale. the people they are in san jose, sacramento and san francisco, and those all went to newsom. if there is solace that the republicans can take away from this, raj and janelle, it's something our political analyst, larry gerston po

i am kris sanchez. >> i am scott mcgrew. marcus and laura both have the day off today. first, this half hour, we are tracking something potentially disturbing. lightning possibly in the bay area. kari, we did not need this. this is going to be a chance for more fire. >> yeah, and this is coming on that one-year anniversary of us dealing with the orange skies we had last year that were triggered by all of the lightning storms that we had in august. taking a look at what is going on for now, the national weather service put up the fire weather watch in yellow, and that includes a big chunk of the bay area and that's because we are seeing thunderstorms moving through and the rain drying up so there could be dry lightning and a risk of that could create locally gusty winds into friday morning, and the fuels, the vegetation is extremely dry. what is happening here, we have a couple systems moving our way, one coming in from the north that will provide energy, and one from the south providing moisture. these two systems on a colli

. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for marcus and laura. this first half hour the storm system whipping up lightening, small fires, bringing rains to some parts as well. >> this is new time lapsed video from what's being called the rock fire burning northwest of cloverdale in mendocino county. it got to about 40 acres overnight before it slowed down and crews did have a hard time reaching the scene because of the rain. >> the light show across the bay area. we have a number of cameras we have been catching the lightning strikes as they come and we are tracking every single one of them. these are camera from san jose and walnut creek and fremont and sfo. i know meteorologist kari hall has been using much more sophisticated equipment to track that same lightning. >> yeah. we powered up storm ranger this morning and i was closely watching the sfo camera because we are seeing lightening strikes in that area in san francisco. as we get a look at this red scan this gives us a high level of detail of the view of where exactly it's raining. let's h

our scott mcgrew has put together this explainer. find it at nbc bay area.com/recall. >>> okay. this is a strange story. a medicine used to treat animals like horses for worms. for some reason some people are using it to try to treat covid. but health experts including the fda and cdc say it absolutely should not be used in this way. it is called ivermectin. yesterday popular podcaster joe rogan announced he had covid and cited that drug as one of many treatments he was taking to combat it. here is the problem. it is not approved treatment for covid and could actually kill you. the fda even tweeted about the dangers of using it just last week writing, you are not a horse. and linking to their page about why you should not be taking this. among the reasons the agency lists it is not meant to treat viral infections. it treats parasites. taking large doses is dangerous and could cause serious harm. you should never take medicine meant for animals even if it was approved for covid which again it is not. dosing for animals are different than doses for humans. despite all these warnin

scott mcgrew? >> good morning. both laws courting a lot of controversy. at today's event, somebody asked what the governor would say to a 13-year-old rape victim if she were forced to carry the baby to term. he said texas would work on arresting all the rapists, presumably before they rape. the election law which the governor signed today blocks many of the new ideas put into place during covid to make voting easier, 24-hour voting, drive-through voting. supporters say it makes voting more secure. but there's no evidence texas saw much election fraud in the past. president biden, meanwhile, is in the northeast meeting with first responders and victims of ida which tore through, drowning some people in their homes. the president warned more storms will come. >> for decades, scientists have warned of extreme weather. it would be more extreme and climate change was here, and we're living through it now. we don't have any more time. >> it is incredibly sobering how many people died in the northeast. thousands of miles from and days after the hurricane's landf

scott mcgrew is joining us now to update us on both of those. and it's got a lot of action in the lonestar state making headlines today. >> reporter: the abortion law is a law. the voting bill will soon become a law once the texas governor signs it. let's start with the abortion law. the law prohibits abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected usually at the six-week mark. no exception is made for rape or incest. the law doesn't call for police or courts to arrest mothers. rather, it allows private citizens, anyone, even someone from a different state to sue the mother, the doctor, anyone who facilitates in any part of that procedure. so that would include taxi drivers, uber drivers, someone who helped pay for the procedure as well. the law says, quote, regardless of whether the person knew or should've known an abortion would be performed. now legal experts do expect the u.s. supreme court to step in at some point, but it has not so far. and so the law is a law, at least for now. president biden weighed in, saying my administration is dee

i am scott mcgrew. stories this morning, president biden later today will layout a strategy to combat emerging covid variants. within the last hour one of the plans includes a call for schools across the nation to set up regular testing with guidance from the cdc. the president will also issue an executive order requiring a new vaccine mandate for all federal workers and millions of federal contractors. today's announcement comes as covid cases among young people surge. a record quarter million children tested positive last week alone. >>> i'm bob redell in lafayette where a crossing guard has been hit and killed in front of stanley middle school here in lafayette. this happened yesterday afternoon around 3:00. this is just as kids were letting out from school. a driver of the suv hit the guard and child, and people had to pull the crossing guard out from under the suv and was pronounced dead at the hospital. the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. >>> let's get a check of your

scott mcgrew, few people seem ready to take them. >> yeah, the government estimates there are about 10 million jobs available right now, kris. but only 235,000 people took new jobs last month. far fewer than economists expected. it appears a lot of people stayed home in august. lack of childcare, fear of covid, maybe those larger unemployment checks were major factors. >> there's no question the delta variant is why today's job report isn't stronger. i know people were looking and i was hoping for a higher number. >> they missed that higher number by quite a bit. now, the extra federal payments the unemployment payments which some economists think are keeping people out of the workforce and nationwide on monday. many states had already discontinued them. so, kris, next month's jobs report looking back on september should be better because by then the extra payments will be gone, pretty much every school system will be back in school.
