we are expecting a lot of unhappy passengers here at sfo. it is because of construction work on runway 28o. it is at the wrap up until the end of the month. as of sunday night, here are the numbers we got from sfo. st. 358 flights were delayed. 137 have been canceled. the reason why, construction of one of the runways started at 12:01 saturday morning. it will continue until september 27. work crews are reconstructed the base layer of the runway. where it intersects with two other runways. sfo says, it is the busiest section of the runway system at the airport and it is showing signs of fatigue. it needs to be addressed. the website says people are experiencing an average 4 our delay. we spoke with some of those passengers. >> for me, it is frustrating. i do not deal with change well. >> it is horrible. you sit on a plane for an hour. with little information. >> reporter: the delays are impacting international travelers the most. what they miss the connection, have to make overnight accommodations until the next batch of flights heads out in

here's a live look at sfo.cancellations have been piling up because of runway construction. that is about to come to an end. >> the project is set to finish tonight, a week ahead of schedule. jobina fortson is live at the airport with the details. >> reporter: good morning. who doesn't love some good news on a thursday morning? look at the board here. it is still on time all the way up. that's not what it looked like last week. we saw those delays as long as three hours. here's some background information on this. the runway 28l was closed for a repaving and painting project and is reopening today. one week ahead of schedule. construction crews worked 24 hours a day to create a new base layer for the runway. the previous layer dates back to the 1960s. it was showing signs of fatigue cracking. this is largely due to the heavy air traffic on this particular portion of the runway. jasmine and her friend, i talked to them this morning. they were prepared for the worst, but so far so good. they tell me their airline

"today in the bay's" thom jensen joins us live at sfo this morning. how are the cancellations looking so far? i know it's early. did the airlines try to prepare for it? >> reporter: it's only the start of this, and passengers here at sfo can expect in a few words more of the same flightmares over the next almost three weeks as construction on one of the airports' main runways get under way, just started saturday. there were more than 400 delays or cancellations both saturday and sunday here at sfo, and expect the same today. it's frustrating for passengers. in fact, after getting a flight cancellation notice about her flight from sacramento to san francisco, one woman took matters into her own hands and took an uber all the way from 20 miles east of sacramento in roseville to sfo, to make sure that she caught her connecting flight from san francisco home to hawaii. >> i have patients to take care of in hawaii so i took an uber for two and a half hours from roseville to here, and they won't pay me back. they say you're on your own. >> my flight's delay

thom jensen is live at sfo with the map that is a big problem at the airport. thom? >> reporter: it is very ugly, marcus. more than 400 delays or cancellations on day one on saturday. nearly 500 yesterday and today as we take a look at the flight board, more cancellations and an airport spokesperson told us more than 100 delays and 100 cancellations already this morning. if this map holds true, we could look at as many as 1300 flights delayed or canceled in the first three days of the 20-day project. the runway in question is 28-l. sfo is repaving a 1900 foot section that intersected runways 1-r and 1-ll and at least two runways could be closed at the same time and causing major headaches and heartaches for passengers. a woman trying to ged home to medford, oregon from asia, told "today in the bay" she's going to spend eight hours in a delay to try to get a free meal for the inconvenience and a san francisco man told us his flight was canceled due to mechanical problems and now worried the runway closure to prevent him to get to memphis for his mom's funeral tomorrow
