oakland mayor shengtao, who is facing a recall vote in just four days, gathered today with other community leaders to announce a sharp drop in homicides. the group spoke to reporters this morning in front of saint columba church on san pablo avenue. the church marks each homicide in the city with a cross. there are noticeably fewer crosses this year than in years past. new figures show homicides are down 32% compared to the same time last year. oakland police say they're working with a number of agencies, such as the chp and the sheriff's office, to bring the numbers down. >> we do have some work to go forward, but we do have to leverage our outside partners. opd can't do it on our own, and we understand that. but i think as a community coming together and working with the county and neighboring jurisdictions, that will actually help us continue to continue going forward and seeing those numbers continue to go down. >> oakland police say there have been 71 homicides so far this year, compared to 113 at the same time in 2023. robberies are also down by 24%, and burglaries have dropped 55%.
