smartest idea but you know, we already question ourselves. >> cnn senior crime correspondent shimon prokupecz obviously done a lot of reporting on other officers and their mistakes that day, and we should be clear that arredondo was not the only person perceived to be in charge. >> no. there was an acting chief of police for the local police department, there was a lieutenant from the texas rangers who is now in the process of being fired. there was the sheriff, who should have been running this operation as well and there were other senior level people who were on scene that should have known things, that should have taken charge. another thing that has been so striking to me watching all of these videos and watching what arredondo is saying is that no one went into that hallway, none of the other police leaders there on that scene went to talk to him, to find out what was going on. he is standing in that hallway for quite a long time, not one of them goes in there to find out what is going on. he is the closest person in the leadership role to the gunman at that point. and he himself, arred

shimon prokupecz, thank you very much for that update. breaking news coming into cnn. we'll continue the conversation now. joining me, retired lapd sergeant, cheryl dorsey and attorney and legal affairs comment commentator riva martin. we just learned they have deactivated the s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. unit that some of the officers were a part of. let me get your reaction to that. shimon prokupecz was just telling us a few moments ago he had been asking for days whether or not the officers were a part of that unit. the police department did not want to get into that. they were saying everything was under investigation. of course we found out later they were part of the unit and now the unit has been disbanded. what are your thoughts? >> so let me say this, because chief davis is in cya mode, right? she understands and she deserves at the pleasure of a mayor, and we know that there have been others who have come forward and complained about these officers and she's allowed it. there was smoke and she failed to recognize it until it was a full-blown fire. and now we know that th

shimon prokupecz joining us live.more do we know about this announcement. >> reporter: this is something that we've been anticipating and it is to hear from the district attorney here in memphis who is making all of the decisions on the state level as to whether or not any of these officers will face charges. and that video, the video that we've all been talking about, for the family members that have described and seeing and how horrific the final hours were of this beating that he suffered. so, we are waiting on word exactly on what this press availability will be, whether or not any of the officers are going to be charged, whether or not charges have been filed. interestingly enough, i've been talking to some the defense attorneys and they tell me they're waiting for word on what the status of their clients are going to be today. and then we're here the courthouse because we're wondering if there is any activity here at the courthouse. the thing is obviously is will they file these charges, are charges going to be

shimon prokupecz, sara sidner, than so both of you there in memphis. and here with us now, retired los angeles police sergeant cheryl dorsey, also the author of the book "black-and-blue: the creation of a social advocate." always great to have you on. thanks for being with us today. as someone who once supervised other officers and has been in that position, what stand out to you in these videos? >> well, the fact that no one intervened and no one stepped in and said, okay, that's enough. i mean, you don't punish people -- and i know that happens, it's an unspoken, unwritten rule at the end of a foot pursuit, officers put in work. they get in a zone. they get involved in what i like to refer to as a wolf pack mentality. and everybody who arrives on scene, even when the person is in cutchs and custody, wants to get in a lick and a kick and a hit. and so all of that is going to be problematic. i'll tell you what else is problematic for me. there's been a lot of talk about transparency, and while i appreciate what chief davis has done initially, there wer

shimon prokupecz, cnn, memphis, tennessee. >> thank you so much.'s get some legal perspective now from criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor bernarda. first, i want to get your reaction to the news yesterday that the memphis police department disbanded this s.c.o.r.p.i.a.n. specialized policing unit. >> in terms of disbanding the s.c.o.r.p.i.a.n. unit, i have great pause with it because what happens commonly is that it just -- it becomes another unit with a different name, with different players, different law enforcement officers. so the question would be, is this something that is going to be permanent? the change has to be systemic change. it's not just about disbanding the unit. the issue is the culture within law enforcement. >> so two more officers are under investigation now. i should say sheriffs deputies, because of their appearance on some of the video that was released on friday night. after it was released, the sheriffs county deputy's office essentially put them on leave. they are now investigating their involvement. the fami

cnn's shimon prokupecz is in memphis tonight. he joins us now. listen, what are you hearing about the next up in this investigation? >> right. so, the next steps are two things here, anderson. it's this release of this video, the body camera footage showing this brutal beating of tyre nichols. and also charges -- whether or not the district attorney is going to file charges against those officers. both of these decisions can come at any point now. there's some indications that it could happen before the end of the week. certainly, communities here are bracing for that. but those are the two big neck steps here, it's the district attorney, whether or not they are going to file charges, and then the release of the body camera footage. >> shimon, have authorities laid out a clear timeline of events? there seem to be key details of what happened at night that are still missing. >> well, certainly there are, anderson. there are a lot of questions over what happened here. and exactly how everything occurred, from the first encounter with tyre nichols,

shimon prokupecz in memphis for us.nks for that update. >>> president biden is speaking out about the video, saying he is outraged and deeply pained by the brutal violence he saw against tyre nichols. cnn white house correspondent arlette saenz is joining us. tell us more about what president biden had to say. >> reporter: he released a statement about 30 minutes after the video was released showing the beating by nichols by police officers in memphis. the president echoed the outrage many are feeling in the country after watching that video. the president said in his statement, quote, it is yet another painful reminder of the profound fear and trauma, the pain and the exhaustion that black and brown americans experience every single day. now, in the president's statement he also urged that any protests that ensue following the release of this video, that they stay peaceful, a call that has also been made by the family of tyre nichols. the president also says he believes there needs to be a full and swift investigation

cnn's crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz is following all these late-breaking developmentsmon, tell us what we're learning about these employees and why they were let go. >> right, wolf. this just happening in the last few moments. the memphis fire department and city hall officials announcing that they have concluded their investigation of the response there by the emts, and have terminated, fired three personnel, two emts, and a lieutenant they say have been terminated from the memphis fire department. they say that their actions or inactions on the scene that night do not meet the expectations of the memphis fire department and are not reflective of the outstanding service, the men and women of the memphis fire department provide daily in our community. now, of course, we have seen -- all have seen this video where the emts are on scene for quite some time. they appear to just be standing around, like many of the officers after the horrific beating. it is some 20 minutes, wolf, 20 minutes before eventually a stretcher arrives and tyre is taken to the hospital. i just wan

shimon prokupecz is live in memphis this morning with more. shimon, good morning.reliminary results of an autopsy were released. what are we learning now? >> reporter: the autopsy was done at the request of the family. the family did their own independent autopsy. and what they found, according to their attorney ben crumb, was that tyre nichols died from severe bleeding as a result of a beating. don, i want to take you out here to the scene. this is where it all started. this is the intersection that police say that tyre nichols was first stopped by police. and then he ran. there was a pursuit. along this road here. all the way -- just about under a mile near where his mother lives and that is where ultimately he would die. where investigators say police caught up to him and then something happened. and according to the family which has viewed body camera footage, they say he was beaten in that location, ultimately was taken to the hospital where he died. most of what we know about what happened here is not coming from the police. they have refused to release any i
