today we have a lot of cloud cover just feeling off from the sierra nevada.ost of it is on the north bay, a little bit on the east bay heading to san francisco and south. but it's more low clouds and fog. 63, hayward, mountain view. livermore is 59. 56 napa. 56 san rafael. so temperatures and you can see why, that cloud cover drifting back from east to west -- to west right to us. and then you can see underneath that, there's more low clouds towards the south bay. sun, cloud, possible showers. maybe like we had on friday night. partly cloudy, a thunderstorm threat is there today. more of the same on thursday. and then that low in the gulf of mexico inches closer, bumps it out of here and we'll go into a decent threat. 80s now in lake county, not knows 90s or 100s. same for ukiah. 74 novato. napa 76. walnut creek, 78. antioch, 84 but again a lot of -- a lot of cloud cover will start to drift in. low 80s for the santa clara valley. 60s, 70s along the coast. maybe some 70s towards santa cruz. redwood city, 76. we do have a kim been -- combination of more of the

so a lot of the activity in the sierra nevada. but overall we are looking at the dry northerly winds to the north of us. the moisture really to the south of us. so that's why the best chance of some thunderstorms will be here from monterey county. the possibility still does exist for dry lightning w the moisture, if we see any thunderstorms we should be some rain associated that as well. right now live doppler 7 hd shows a lost activity by fresno and as we take a look along the coast here. so if you are headed south, you will notice that this morning things are pretty active here, right on through the afternoon. through the weekend we are looking at santa barbara, l. a., possibility of the storms not only along the coast, but the higher elevations, and that includes the foothills closer to home. it's all due to this area of low pressure drift to go the south and west and setting up shop here. not moving at all right on through the weekend. in fact maybe even through monday and tuesday it stays put. with that counter clockwise flow

the high pressure in control, we have monsoonal moisture popping up over the sierra nevada bringing somehowers and some thunderstorms up there but the ridge is going to strengthen a little bit for today and more so into the next couple of days and some of the numbers inland could flirt with 100 degrees, by late tomorrow, and into wednesday. and so as we look toward our future cast today, patchy fog to begin with as we head throughout the day today and it begins to break up quite a bit and pull back to the coastline where it will sit there the better part of today and most of the bay and the valleys looking great with plenty of sunshine there. and temperatures are going to heat up as high as 89 degrees in morgan hill today and 79 in sunnyvale. and about 74 and sunny in san mateo. and 72 degrees in hayward. and east bay numbers, as high as 90 degrees in brentwood. and 88 in pittsburg. and 88 degrees in pleasant hill. about 90 degrees in pleasanton. then as we look toward our friends in the north, 80 degrees in snow sonoma. 65 degrees in san francisco. and 70 as you make your way to san lea

that's why the sierra nevada mountains saw more than 50 feet of snow, spring rains flooded the midwestxas was kept bone dry-- its worst drought in half a century. these waves pounding the west coast this week are not caused by la nina, but increasingly scientists do believe that another la nina system is developing out in the pacific ocean and that could cause more unpredictable weather. this week, the united nations doubled its probability of another la nina from 25% to 50%. it's not clear if climate change is having an impact on la nina events. they generally occur every three to five years, not back to back. >> temperatures at the equator are starting to drop, and that is really the footprint of la nina. all the smart money is on a double bounce for la nina. >> reporter: that could mean more hurricanes. the jet stream's winds normally break up hurricanes, but when la nina kicks the jet stream north, hurricanes can barrel into the gulf or, like irene, slide right up the east coast. if there's any good news, experts say this la nina should be weaker than the last-- a shorter but still
