new details tonight on the arrest made in a decades old cold case in sunnyvale. a detective who worked on the case says he managed to obtain the dna of the suspect, 59 year old richard jeffrey martinez, without him knowing. martinez was arrested for sexually assaulting a seven year old girl in 1996. the detective says he used genetic genealogy to narrow the pool of suspects and needed martinez's dna to make the match. we had to do what we call a surreptitious dna collection. it's we're collecting dna from a place publicly where he's not knowing that i'm law enforcement and that i'm doing that. martinez was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault and four counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a child. martinez is suspected in at least two other sexual assault cases after the break, a new beginning for some inmates at the san francisco county jail. also, a new documentary is highlighting a bay area church and its 170 year legacy. what to expect from this week's premiere ♪ (upbeat music) ♪ ( ♪ ) ( ♪ ) ( ♪ ) ( ♪ ) ( ♪ ) ( ♪ ) visit your local volvo reta

as you ride over to cupertino and sunnyvale, 732. let's go back to the headlines.ow been four months since the mayor of oakland fired police chief loren armstrong. but don't expect to see a replace anytime soon. the oakland police commission hasn't even started the search for a new police chief because there are disagreements over the way to do story. you've been on it for as while. so explain what's happening. well, dave, first, some background on the oakland police commission. in case people aren't familiar with it, it has seven members. they're all volunteers, regular people in the community. they're not politicians. but this group has a lot of power. they have the power to fire the oakland police chief and they have done that in the past. but they're also in charge of starting the process to hire a new permanent police chief, something they apparently haven't done yet. it's now been four months since oakland's mayor fired lauren armstrong, and the city still does not have a permanent replacement for him . the mayor says the police commission can't seem to agree
