tara moriarty joins us live from concord with exclusive video. tara? >> reporter: well, firefighters at station 6 can feel pretty good about themselves this morning because they pulled two women from a burning house and one of the firefighters who carried the woman out was wearing this helmet. on it, you can see a camera that's attached to it. we have some video to show you that gives you a real sense of what it was like inside the house. it's very dark. it's very smoky but it really shows you how dangerous a firefighter's job can be. >> where you at, ma'am? where are you? >> where is she? >> she's in that bedroom there. >> i got her right here. come with me, ma'am. let's go! >> reporter: the two firefighters were able to pull the two women out. one walked one of the women out. the other firefighter carried the other woman out. >> we could hear the people in the background screaming i've been a firefighter for 13 years now, and this is actually my first live rescue of two people. normally the situations don't dictate that, especially at this time of th

tara moriarty joins us with how the city is remembering those horrible events of october 1991, tara? >> reporter: one of the firefighters who fought the flames that day was out near the oakland airport and later this morning you may remember him from some footage that ktvu channel 2 news aired 22 years ago. >> i have never seen anything like this... >> reporter: he is the firefighter holding the hose there. he will be sharing his thoughts as the fire killed 25 people took down several homes and 15 charred acres. it started as a grass fire october 19th 1991 in berkeley hills. crews thought they completely he can continuation wished it and -- extinguished it. there were a lot of challenges they faced that day including what went wrong, what went right, would we be prepared if it happened again and we will talk to a neighbor who was forced from his home that day. >>> and tonight there will be a special ktvu channel 2 news special on the east bay which starts at 9:00 p.m. followed by our 10:00 news. >>> we live in earthquake country but not everybody is prepared to protect their homes. t

. >>> ktvu's tara mor quartty joins us with details on the new campus threat. >>> well, school officials received a fax here at concord high school, saying that someone was going to show up at 10:00 in the morning and start shooting. an audio warning was sent out to parents last night. we will have extra administrators on campus for additional support. >> reporter: concord police will have extra officers on hand as well as at eldorado middle school and the elementary school. classes will be in session. police want to ensure that nothing happens. they're asking people to be observant and report anything suspicious. last week there was a similar situation where someone sent an anonymous threat to a school official. there was not a credible threat and school went on as planned. >>> live in concord, i'm tara moriarity. >> activists have been camped out near city hall for close to two weeks now, but the city of oakland posted an order on its website last night saying activists must vacate the plaza every night. a long standing rat problem, public urination and vandalism are all cited for reas

tara moriarty has just arrived and joins us live with more on the rescue. tara? >> reporter: we're here live on west street. this is between mlk and market street in oakland. they've just whisked a man off in an ambulance. it appears he was suffering from some smoke inhalation. this is the building over here in question, behind this red vehicle you can see where they have the fire hoses hooked up to the hydrant. if they take some pictures from chopper 2, maybe you will get a better perspective of what's going on. i believe firefighters have cut a hole in the roof there trying to get some of this smoke out there. heavy smoke reported around 6:38 this morning. this appears to be a renovated garage with an entrance to the house, according to the battalion chief i just spoke to. he said it's a maze in there. they have pulled out tons of stuff, tons of clothes. but they are having to grope their way through to search for more victims. neighbors believe there may be more people trapped insighed -- trapped inside. they did an initial sweep. they are doing another one to

tara moriarty is live with more. >> reporter: the cats and other animals at the shelter will get to saythanks to volunteers. actually, not that much will be changing except the eight city employees will be losing their jobs and the animal control staff will be shrinking by half. the shelter workers will be replaced by two part-time employees and volunteers with friends of alameda animal shelter. city officials say the cuts had to be made to trim the city budget. the move will save alameda more than $600,000 a year. steve cooler just adopted a dog today and says he's happy that the shelter is gonna stay open. alameda is a really dog- friendly area. so the city knew it had to keep services here. so when an animal is found stray, the person should have the opportunity to get the animal back locally. you just make a phone call and come get their pet versus going to another city or jurisdiction. volunteers will feed the animals clean cages, walk dogs. medical services will be contracted out by local vets. police will still take part of animal control complaints and vicious animals. when it c

tara do you dell. anne, good morning to you in washington.stance. a lot of the news sparked by the texas pastor calling the mormon religion a cult after introducing rick perry at the event. mitt romney has been here before, four years ago. how big of an issue will religion be for him? >> well, it's too soon to really tell. but it doesn't seem -- certainly hasn't derailed him at this point. it's going to be an issue. they always knew it would be for a certain portion of the republican based christian conservatives. in some ways, it could be considered a welcome distraction, if you like. when you're talking about his religion, you're not talking about potentially his flipflopping on issues or not being conservative enough. you're talking about something that americans are willing to forgive, if you will. it's his religion. he's able to turn this to his advantage. he's talking now about civility and discourse. we saw in 2008 in the general election, americans are not going to be swayed by discussions of religion achs as much as in the past. even
