ktvu tara moriarty joins us now from the crash scene. tara. >> reporter: a tow truck is taking one of those squad cars away. these are vehicles from the contra costa county sheriffs department. they are loading it on that flat bed there. this is because the two cars got stuck in ice plants after a high speed chase. it happened around 3:45 this morning. two contra costa county sheriffs deputies noticed a black lexus without plates. now the driver led them on a chase into berkeley and after 11 minutes of pursuit they ended up here on 80 westbound just past the university avenue exit. the lexus drove into the brush. so there is a little bit of a fire out here. unfortunately the lexus driver got away. right now traffic is sort of crawling 80 westbound. this is typical for this hour. i don't know if this particular accident impacted traffic too much. if you pan over to the left you can see it just starts to pick up here past this accident. so we will continue to stay out here and let you know how traffic improves throughout the morning. live

tara? >> reporter: that's right, he could hear a bunch of children crying and screaming and he said he didn't realize at the time there had been a deadly malling but he and other neighbors are surprised this particular dog attacked because they had seen it on several occasions without a leash and it seemed very friendly. all of this unfolded around 11:00 on elizabeth way, attacked by a pit bull mix, he was rushed to the hospital at stamford and we are told he died because he lost too much blood. he lived on this street in his grandparents' house along with several cousins. firefighters themselves had a rough time with this response given the age of the child and the fact that there were a lot of other children who witnessed the attack and it was emotionally taxing on everyone. they are expected to release more details and there are reports that the dog and another dog inside the home were taken away by animal control. ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> police are investigating a hit-and-run c

ktvu tara moriarty has been following this story. this salvage operation in the berkeley estuary since 4:30. >> reporter: the alameda county dive team came out here and they helped run a cable from the tow truck to the car in the estuary. they just pulled it out of the water there. we took a look at the back of the car. it's a range rover. it has no license plates and it does appear to be a newer car. the back window has been blown out. but it was completely submerged in the education chew area -- estuary. divers helped pull the man to the road. he used the car to drive through the front windows of a gas station. and then he tried to get away. so officers chased him across the bay bridge and used spike strips to blow out his tires. he was only traveling at a low rate of speed at about 30 miles an hour when he exited interstate 80 and got off and he said he drove into the estuary because he was trying to dodge police. >> he claimed out the window and was able to grab on to something and swam to the shore. berkeley fire came out and on
