tara moriarty has the latest on this story, tara? >> reporter: the past 14 hours has been hectic and we are here at the latest shooting in international boulevard and a half way down the street is where police were. they are just getting ready to leave and it's in front of a home they surrounded at 1:30 this morning. with guns drawn, they are only calling him a person of interest at this point. witnesses say a man shot him in the stomach and we have just been told police are clearing the scene at the moment and they were going to be sifting through some homes and we believe some of these houses may be abandonedden and it looks as if they are taking off. it happened in west oakland and they say they have had it with the violence. >> you are spending more time on this occupied stuff instead of trying to help these kids out here. >> reporter: police say six people were shot all are expected to survive, another man was shot on telegraph also with non-life threatening injuries, and investigators have been quite busy and they are clearing

tara moriarty is out there now, what do you know tara? >> reporter: we spoke to the italian police chief. he said a heater was used to keep a pair of turtles warm. the fire broke outside of a garage located off almond road. the fire quickly spread to the building and the turtles that were kept in a wooden pen were able to escape out to the backyard. it turns out the cord which led from the house to the heating pad malfunctioned and started some hay on fire and spread to the inside barn structure and spread to the outside barn structure. >> reporter: that barn structure is actually the garage we are talking about and it is detached from the home. one firefighter suffered heat exhaustion. he halled equipment along distance and he is expected to be okay. six crews responded and they were able to knock out the fire in a couple of minutes. the estimated damages are about $50,000. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> and reports this morning, ambulance company was threatening to shut down its services if employees do not take a pay c

that is where tara moriarty is. >> reporter: we just spoke to him. he described how he made it out of the burning building alive. he's actually sitting in a truck with his mother as they are talking to firefighters. he told us how his mother woke up because she heard crackling noises. the entire roof was engulfed by the time crews arrived. after he got out of the house with his mom, they ran to the other half of the duplex to make sure their neighbors also got out. >> my mom, she woke up to hearing the cracking of the fire and so she came in and woke me up. >> you went next door to wake them up. >> yeah. we knew that they are our neighbors and we are in a duplex so we share the same building. >> reporter: high winds in excess of 20 miles an hour posed a great challenge for crews. about 45 firefighters tackled the blaze and had to set up an extension thousands of feet downwind. now it took 40 minutes for cruise to get the up -- crews to get the upper hand on the fire. fire investigator is on scene here. he will try to determine what started this fire.

tara moriarty joins us live with all the investigations, good morning tara. i just finished cleaning up the blood that you see right behind me and it was his niece who will be three soon, she was struck by bullets in the knee and twice in the stomach and she just underwent surgery and is expected to survive. police described the shootout as a rolling gun battle. just after 7:00 last night -- 7:00 last night, he walked in and his target, a female customer. he shot her, left and returned to apparently finish the job. that is when the customer's male friend returned fire, the grandmother and two women and the child were shot. >> there was a lot of bullet holes in the glass and chairs annuals there is a lot of bullets and stuff in the walls. >> reporter: investigators recovered dozens of shell- casings, now an innocent -- innocent people were caught in the crossfire. police did arrest the gunman and police are searching for two men gunmen and that initial gunman who walked up was not alone. we will show you a tool that police officers will be using in trying to c

tara moriarty joins us now from the scene. tara. >> reporter: those folks were able to get back inside of their apartment building about four minutes ago. that is the good news. we did just speak to the battalion chief. she told us an extension cord is to blame for the fire. 3:30 this morning the fire broke out of the apartment building. we have pictures you will see only on two of the inside of the womans second story unit where the fire began. luckily that woman smelled smoke, she woke up and walked out. now around 4:30 crews transported her to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and other medical issues. firefighter were able to get the flames under control here. >> it was located in the back of the apartment. when the first crew did arrive there was no initial condition on scene. due to their initiative they were able to locate the fire very quickly. >> reporter: crews were able to evacuate the other people living in the other 15 units. no one was hurt. there is no damage estimate as of now. again, the cause for

ktvu tara moriarty joining us live right now. what is happening there today?rter: you know i just spoke with one of the patrolmen here and he told me that some extra stuff was brought in last night to deep clean the school. to sanitize a lot of the surfaces that students might come into contact with. about 100 students actually were sent home yesterday and about 50 had called in sick. so the decision was made to cancel classes for today. now again if you are take a look behind me you can see the school here. this is saint ignatius prep. if you take a look at the high school's website you will see the reason behind it the stomach flu. the health department recommend the high school be shut down today to properly clean. there is about 1400 students that attend this private school. students say they other kids coughing and throwing up inside trash cans. we are told the bug began about four days ago and quickly spread. gastroenteritis is highly contagious. it's possible many more children could have been exposed. health officials are telling students to stay home

tara moriarty is at the site where hundreds of bones have already been found. tara. >> reporter: in three hours teams are supposed to resume digging here and if you take a look behind me it's really dark out here. we're in a very rural location. there is the sheriffs deputies car right here. we're about a mile from the search location where over the weekend teams found more bones, teeth, and a woman's ring. we were allowed into the dig site. it's a 30 feet deep hole where the well had been. investigators believe the remains of 20 victims could be found here and two other dig sites nearby in calveras county linked to death row inmate shermantine and herzog. herzog hanged himself after shermantine provided maps of detailed locations. >> it's like a woman's shoe. a sandal. >> there is a pair of looks like small womens shoes. tennis shoes. clearly from a person. it's gruesome. it's a horrible scene. >> reporter: more than 300 bones have been recovered in all. yesterday investigators unearthed a womans ring engraved with initials. saturday they found a skull. sherman

tara moriarty joins us with more, tara? >> reporter: evidence technicians wrapped up their investigation and store owners are getting ready to board up all of their storefronts. they are sweeping and cleaning up the glass inside tina's nail salon and you can see where the bullet holes are in the front. three people were struck by bullets last night. two men walked into the store last night and targeted a female worker. after shots rang out, they reportedly returned to polish off the job that is when he pulled out his own gun and fired back. it turned into a rolling gun battle and the violence started at springs road. several businesses nearby were ridelled with bullet holes including domino's pizza and two parked cars across the street. witnesses say they were shaken up. >> i got on the floor and i protected my baby. >> reporter: now the three-year- old daughter of one of the workers received a gunshot wound and she was taken to the medical center in oakland. the grandmother was also shot twice in the arm as well as one oth

ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty sat the search site with more on when the search will resume andalready been found. tara. >> reporter: over the weekend excavators pulled 300 bones from an old abandoned well. if you look off in the distance there is a flashing light down there and that is where crews are. this was all laid out in a map provided by a convicted serial killer. teams are supposed to resume their digging and sifting here at 8:00 if the weather permits. yesterday investigators sifted through the dirt of a 35-foot deep hole where the well had once been looking for any signs of the possible 20 victims that may have been left there or two other dig sites linked to death row inmate wesley shermantine and loren herzog. herzog hung himself last month. they uniterred a human skull, teeth, and ring with initials on it. >> we believe the jewelry will help. we believe there is some initials. it has been buried for several years so we will see how well it cleans up and see if we can determine the possibility of who the owner is and maybe also put it out to the media to help us ide

ktvu's tara moriarty is in vallejo right now. so what are investigators saying this morning, tara?n incredibly chaotic scene at tina's nail salon. evidence of that is right in the glass here. you can see that there's a bullet hole. the door has been boarded up. next door at the hair salon if we walk over this way, the violence went on across the domino's pizza and across the street. the violence erupted last night at 7:00. investigators say the man walked in with a gun. his intended target, a female customer getting her nails done. he shot at her, left, then returned to polish off the job. that's when her male friend push pull the out -- pulled out his own gun. >> there were a couple of dozen shell casings recovered. some in the parking lot directly behind me in the nail salon. there were others located down the street and across the street. >> so this was a rolling gun battle? >> yes. it appears to be a rolling gun battle. >> reporter: the 2-year-old was airlifted to oakland. her uncle said she was shot in the knee and twice in the stomach. she's in critical but stable condition.

tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> 7:32.lice in oakland are investigating a series of shootings in a violent weekend and there was a fatal shooting early this weekend. it happened at 83rd and international boulevard around 1:30 a.m. police now have detained a person of interest but it's still not clear what led up to that kill. >>> oakland police are also still looking for suspects in a drive-by shooting in broad daylight. six people were wounded on adeline. investigators placed nearly 50 evidence markers outside of the home where the shooting took place. many neighbors are becoming increasingly frustrated with the violence right outside of their home. >> i'm tired of all of this shooting stuff going on. they are spending more time on the occupy stuff instead of trying to help the kids. >> police say five young men and one young woman were wounded in the shooting. all six victims are expected to survive. in all, there were ten shootings in one 24-hour period in oakland. >>> and police in santa rosa are investigating a homici

tara moriarty join us live from san francisco. with details. tara?watched the sheriff walk in a couple of minutes ago and his wife is also expected to be here. here's what's going to happen today. both of them are going to undergo what is called an orientation where they learn about the effects of domestic violence upon children. they will be with two other sets of parents also on the calendar. then they will be meeting with a mediator. they will come up with some sort of visitation regarding their son. then the judge will either giver it the ok or not. if the -- the process should take two to three hours, we're told. last friday, mirakarimi was seeking an emergency request to visit his son but the family court judge shot it down. that's why he's back here today. in the criminal case the judge issued a stay-away order after the sheriff was arrested last month. which basically means he cannot see his wife or son. he's pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of domestic violence stemming from a new year's eve incident. meanwhile, prosecutors yesterda
