and then a number in the industry recognized that unconventional development that had started in the barnettside of fort worth and dallas could maybe be applied here. and it turned out that that was exactly right. and we are in, you know, a renaissance in the permian basin today. erik: no oil company has more land in the permian basin than chevron. yet chevron missed the first wave of fracking success. the independent producers were faster and more aggressive. >> the shale revolution came on so fast. let's be clear -- so far, the majors do not -- have not played well. but i think we have to think about how the large, integrated oil companies work in the time horizon in which they think, vis a vis or compared to smaller independent companies. and it comes down to long-term versus short-term. the major integrated oil companies are superb at managing for the long-term. they think about things in 25 to 50 year time segments. erik: now chevron is finally catching up. it's building a new headquarters in midland after outgrowing the one that has been there for decades. and it is developing almost 2

>> investigators say the driver did not follow protocol when the train rolled away from the tracks. byron barnett is live in boston with all the details. byron? reporter: according to a source disciplinary hearing, this driver of the runaway train got a 30 day suspension and recommendation for discharge. 7 news has learned that david vasquez, the operator of the red line train has been suspended without pay pending his termination. according to a source of the boston carman's cumin, vasquez can appeal but has not decided if he will. vasquez, a veteran 52-year-old "t" employee was supposed to be at the controls of a red line train leaving the braintree station last week. but when he got off the train to correct a signal problem, recalls say the train took off without him. dozens of passengers were on board the train which traveled through several stations until other "t" workers stopped the train by cutting power to the third rail. investigators say he used the train microphone cord to tie "t" officials also say vasquez did not set the hand brake before he got off the train. governor baker reactin

if you look at the barnett shale, haynesville shale, this has been under development in the last 20 yearsof these are the smaller more mid-cap companies that have created an industry relative to the exxons and the chevron's. they have allowed this to occur under their feet. erik: there cost of producing is the issue i would suggest. vincent: in the early stage of a lifecycle, your costs are high. you have this scale. that is key for the smaller and more mid-cap producers. it's the decline in that cost curve over time that helps. erik: this has to create value for the investor. if we look at a chart comparing the price of oil, against an index. we can see that over 10 years, they have not created any value. leveraged. be they are returning no better than the price of oil. the only one that's consistently outperforming is exxon mobil. they are doing something right at everybody else is doing something wrong. ancent: you probably see similar trajectory with all commodities. it's a cyclical bet. it may look very different. putael: industries don't themselves out of business. to the big compan
