the other in new york stock exchange. at united is doing today to make it up to customers, but first let's check in with landon dowdy at cnbc and the impact on the market. good morning. >> hey, eun, good morning to you. well, the new york stock exchange says an internal technical glich and not a cyber attack likely caused wednesday's trading halt that lasted nearly four hours. it's the longest outage in recent memory and technical glitches aren't that uncommon. most famously, there was the flash crash in 2010 that sent the dow plunging 600 points in ten minutes. trading is up, stocks went on the nyse went on uninterrupted as they routed through the nasdaq. the nyse handled all the stock trades ten years, but it's now 25% as it competes with other dozens of exchanges. the impacts of yesterday's trading halt is limited but it could make it harder for exchanges to argue against greater oversight from regulators. anyway, the world will be watching at the opening bell today. >> for sure. thank you. >>> and united said it's waiv

this was a technical issue at the new york stock exchange. whether a flood of orders came through or what caused the outage, we will find out later on. we do have an equity market that is complex, and unnecessarily complex. some people argue the fragmentation of stock exchanges and dark pools was a good thing. that is false. competition is a good thing, but excessive fragmentation creates unnecessary arbitrage opportunities. maybe you don't need one stock exchange, but you don't need 11. if you look at the numbers today, volume migrated to four other exchangers, and for different exchanges did not pick up volume. i would suggest that any exchange it has 3% market share or left does not deserve to be a protected asset. >> what joe is alluding to our systematic changes. there's a reason the new york stock exchange has engaged in this massive technological upgrade, to chase after the revenues provided by high-frequency trading. they gone through in almost changes in the hardware, software, and the physical infrastructure, to try to bring high-fre
