the s&p is this close to an all-time high. o give us their thoughts on the market, jeremy hill from tf market advisers is with me here at the new york stock exchange and jeff cox of cnbc.com is with maria at the schwab impact conference in washington. jeremy, we sort of continue to move higher. jobs numbers helped, the interest rate cuts helped. anything that's a headwind right now you see for this market? >> well, i think what's interesting right now, is i think we're at what engineers call an angle of repose, which is where an object or a rock starts falling down a hill. what i mean by is that is i think we're transitioning, at least in the equity markets, away from this beta market, more into a fundamental market analysis, and also i think with the credit markets we'll see the same thing. i think managers got burned a little bit the first time we talked about taper and they're scared of duration risks and they're going to transition into more of a traditional, normalized credit risk. >> you know, i guess you said earlier, je

we're seeing the s&p 500 up 5%. if you look at december going forward, nine of the last 13 decembers have been positive. the average gain 1%. we're seeing, you know, strong profit growth, over 5.6% for the third quarter. the s&p 500, over 6.7% expectations for the fourth quarter. so it will, all in all, what we're seeing, you know, signs of continual growth of earnings, growth in multiple expansion. but, you know, all within a reasonable bound. we're looking to a good year on close. >> you know, patricia, you make the point that we're in the fifth year of an economic recovery. i mean, by all measurements, that's the long and the tooth recovery. how much longer do you think that can last? >> we have a month to go. i think it can last through the end of the year, but i'm worried as we get into next -- as we get into next year. a lot of bad things happen in the fifth year. you might remember the crash of '87. that was a fifth year. we got a fifth year when we got through 1999, but then stepped off the cliff into 2000. i

we are there. 1800 on the s&p 500 we are there. ons are that this will be -- this five-week period from thanksgiving all the way to christmas, it's one of the strongest times of the whole year. on average we're up 4% or so in that particular period. we were up 10% between may and beginning of november. you would have missed out a huge amount if you pulled out. some of those seasonal indicators from the s&p 500 don't work as well. put that up and we'll see what is going on. meantime, discussions are about signs of the bubble. you know the signs of the bubble. this is looking for various signs of other things here. investor sentiment has been bullish. market is at record levels. we heard this all weekend. there's a reason why the markets could pull back. the problem is, the russell 2000 suddenly dropped in the middle of the month and started to dramatically underperform the s&p 500. this is a one-month chart. everyone is like, uh-huh, that's the sign that's going to tell us and the market pulls back. but it didn't. it dropped a couple
