>> meteorologists tim williams and marty bass has your first warning weather forecast. let's begin with tim. >> good afternoon, every one. we are looking at rain moving across the region, we always say there is going to be a transition, the key is here you are not shoveling rain off your car. we are looking at rain moving across the region and it is going to be with us through the afternoon and evening. some of the heavier bands west of washington. lighter bands around the beltway will impact your travel around most of the ar but most of this rain is light. there are breaks around finksburg and west of the city so there are breaks through the afternoon but some of these bands are steady. you don't see a lot of reds, yellows and brighter colors right in our immediate area, so they are not very intense storms in this. but they are going to move on through. now, this is one system we watch. it moves out by tomorrow. then we have our eye on something as marty and i have talked about many times, just in time for president's day, marty, take it away -- >> -- doesn't it? and li

meteorologist tim williams and bob turk are tracking live doppler radar. and the conditions we can expect around the state. let's start inside with bob. >> all right. cloudy skies now. temperatures well above freezing here. we don't expect anything really major until tomorrow, when temperatures will begin to fall, particularly in the afternoon or tomorrow evening, when you're going out. now, there is precip showing up on radar. most of it, for the most part, is in the form of snow, across ohio valley, indiana. south of us, saw some light rain. and we'll see -- some of that light rain. and temperatures get back in the 30s. we'll probably see a mixture of rain and snow. however, it will eventually get colder as this front out to the west isn't going to start moving across the region by 1:00 tomorrow afternoon, it's just going through the baltimore region. and then temperatures fall. and that's when we can see some accumulations of snow across the region. now, temperature-wise now. it's still very mild here. the only really cold spot out there in oakland. 32,

meteorologist tim williams and bob turk are updating the forecast. >>> when you should -- what you should know. it's like across the united states. well above normal temps. let's take a look at temperatures now. we have dropped to 60 degrees. 50 degrees in oakland. 64 in pax river. still 65, in washington. and this afternoon, we came close to the record. got up to briefly, 70 degrees at the airport. 50, the low this morning. our average low is 25. the average high is 42. the record, in 2002. i don't remember -- know if you remember it. record low, 7, back in 1965. tim is in the outback with a comparison between this january and last january. tim? >> well, what a difference a year makes. and even last january, we were only marginally in the very cold air for a short time. let's talk about it with the cold temperatures and snow. everyone is wondering, where did winter go, or where has it been for the last two or three months. last year, we got to an average for january. we're talking january now, of 37.8 degrees for the entire month. this january, our a

meteorologist tim williams and bob turk are tracking this stretch of unbelievable weather. we're going to start inside with bob. >> it has been an amazing stretch there. forget what the groundhog says. we'll have to wait to see what happens this coming six weeks or so. it's winter, no matter the kind of weather we have. it's still winter. take a look at radar. one little sprinkle down here across the northern neck of virginia. we had rain across southern areas of our region. but that's way off. way down to 50 degrees, still well above normal this time of year. temperatures around this state, out ranging from 37 in oakland. yes, it's a little chilly. 43 in hagerstown. and 51 over in washington. so how have temperatures been in the last week or so? and how does it compare with what's normal? tim has a look at those numbers. >> reporter: well, we have been talking about these temperatures being so far above normal. and for such a long stretch at a time. let's give you perspective on this. right now, the average high is around 42 degrees. it's fluctuated maybe a degree or two.

let's take a live look outside and go to tim williams, who is tracking first warning doppler radar for us. >> definitely the latest in a round of very brief winter experiences we've had over the last few weeks. and we have another one that is going to move into the region. in a pretty short time now, and stay with us for at least the first part of the weekend. what you're seeing is the leading edge of the system that is going to start bringing moisture from the southwest. that eventually will start to bring area wide. look to the top left of your screen, and you're going to see a front that will bring in the cold air. those two combined will bring us a bit of a taste of winter. and it's going to happen pretty much overnight. right now, our watches and advisories go in effect for most of the state. that's the lighter color there, at midnight tonight. stay with us through tomorrow night, at 7:00 p.m. the dark blue out in the far western part of the state, allegheny county and garrett county, that is a winter storm warning that goes into effect at 9:00 p.m. what we're expecting out of all

meteorologist tim williams is tracking first warning live doppler radar. hi, tim. >> hello, mary. gamp, everyone. important to note that today and tomorrow are going to be temperatures well above the average. we'll be in the 50s on both days. while you see high pressure in control in our forecast forecast. we are watching this system just developing down around the gulf states. that will pick up and head in our direction. so much so, the national weather service has issued a winter storm watch in effect for parts of the west virginia panhandle right around virginia. that is in effect on sunday a.m. through sunday late. but as you see, nothing in effect for maryland just yet. right now, we're looking at temperatures in the 50s. 38 in oakland is the coldest temperatures in the higher elevations. 53 on the shore. and with that high pressure in control, we are still going to be looking at mild air moving into the region on saturday. so our stage is really set for a nice weekend. but that blast is going to make things a little tricky on sunday. we'll talk about how it impacts your week

meteorologist tim williams is here. tim, we are seeing some of the spring flowers. >> yeah. they're confused. everyone is confuse the ed. mother -- confused. mother nature is confused. we watch another portion of it moving through late tonight. but ahead of that front, we have had unseasonably mild temperatures with the warm front leading the way. temperatures have gone way up today. and we have another batch of rain moving into the region that we may see a bit of tonight. but let's take a look at the temperatures around the area. with the good bit of warm air we had. we have been up over 67 degrees in the last hour. we're now down, down to 67 degrees, on the first day of february. 51 in oakland. 59 in cumberland. 65 in elkton. we are warmer here than we are in ocean city. so i guess if you really want to take a dip, come up to the inner harbor. that might be your best bet. we'll talk about your unseasonably mild temperature. and talk about times past. >> looking forward to it, tim. thank you. >>> tax increases and same-sex marriage are the focus of governor martin o'malley'

meteorologist tim williams and bob turk are updating the first warning forecast, into next week. let's go first outside to tim. hello, tim. >> reporter: well, definitely a little bit of mist already out here now. temperatures are starting to drop. but right now, still a little too mild. we'll go down tonight to around 30 degrees. and tomorrow, temperatures will start to drop. we'll have a little rain-snow mix after about sunrise. and turning into intermittent snow showers throughout the day. we've talked about the accumulation. of course you can keep posted on those on wjz.com. tomorrow night is the key. temperatures drop and the winds really pick up. for the next five days, woo we send it in to bob. >>> i think tomorrow night is really going to feel like winter in some areas. particularly west of us, where it will get much colder. it will be windy. could be a snow squam. could give us a quick accumulation in some areas. and could freeze up quickly after dark. 43 down to 18 tomorrow night. with the winds, it will feel more like 10 degrees will 32, that's all the high we're expecti

let's go right to meteorologist tim williams, tracking first warning live doppler radar. tim? >> good afternoon, mary. good afternoon, everyone. what we're losing with this system as it progresses east is the severity of it all. much of it lost over the mountains. we have a tornado warning as far -- or as close, as we should say, to the west ohio valley. temperatures in the 40s. we're at 49 degrees. and we have a good bit of rain moving in the east. we have .95 inches reported at bwi marshall since this system started dumping rain on us. just right after midnight or so, across parts of the area. what you're seeing here is the warm air out ahead of this front. the front is the distinguishing line between the warm and the cold air. and then there are several different areas of low pressure that are kind of spinning all of that air and bringing it auth. -- altogether. and this is the system that has brought the severe weather toward parts of the midwest, parts of the ohio valley and parts of kentucky and even missouri. and of course, up at the top there, those are blizzard-like c

here is meteorologist tim williams with the updated numbers from first warning weather. tim? >> reporter: well, mary, good afternoon. good afternoon, everyone. yesterday we got up to a daytime high of about 49 degrees. the daytime highs now, the average, is 44 for this day. so we are at 44 now. just coming down, actually from about 45 last hour. so we have been a little above that temperature at points through the day, as mary mentioned. 30 in oakland. 35 in ocean city. and 43 in elkton. if it feels a little warmer than yesterday, of course, without all of the precipitation, the real difference is the sun. we are about 8 degrees warmer than we were this time yesterday, across the entire area, we are pretty much substantially above where we were this time yesterday. the sun really makes a difference. and we do not have a lot of wind to deal with as well. but we are going to see a bit of a change. it's going to get pretty cold here over the next few days. and we'll have complete details coming up. >> let's check in on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. hi, kr

meteorologist tim williams and bob turk have a look at our temperatures and the final snowfall totals from our latest brush with winter. bob? >> let's take a look at temperatures this afternoon. very normal day, believe it or not. yes. temperatures right now, 43. normal high today is around 44, 45. 32 now in oakland. 46 in washington. 42 in ocean city. 43 right now is really 7 degrees warmer than it was yesterday at this time. 10 degrees warmer in washington. so yesterday afternoon, with the clouds and the rain and snow in the region. temperatures are generally in the 30s. speaking of the rain and snow, tim has a look at some of the snowfall numbers such as they are occurring across the region yesterday. tim? >> well, not very impressive, with the snowfall. we did have a mixture, of course, of snow and rain. but the snowfall totals were highest towards the north and west of the area, of the metro area. and some of the higher amounts did approach about 2 1/2, maybe to 3 inches in some -- or some isolated pockets. limeborough in western maryland got 2.2 inches. parkton up at the norther

right now, let's check in with meteorologist tim williams.e's tracking live doppler radar in the first warning weather center. hi, tim. >> well, you know, it is definitely is starting to move across the area. this is starting to dwusm moisture around -- dump moisture around in different forms. we started to see the clouds leading in to the system, right around the early part of the afternoon. and now, what you're seeing there is ral temperature dictating what we had, from the city, bottom of the beltway to the south and east. we have rain and wintry mix snow, with snow and sleet around parts of the area. around the 95 corridor. really from elkton to hagerstown. and a lot of snow, primarily across the mason-dixon line. the winter weather advisory we had was in effect until 8:00 p.m. from the top tier of the state. and we have now eliminated, of course, baltimore city. because the temperatures are just going to be so warm around the metro area that it's not going to be a problem on the roads. we could see some refreezing overnight, with black i
