tim williams explains why our region has been hit so hard. >> trees are losing grounds to pavement, inamerican cities and baltimore is among them. >> it indicates a decrease in the tree canopy for baltimore and u.s. cities. >> reporter: the forest service city runs through 2005 and identifies decline in tree cover at a rate of 4 million trees per year. >> there is natural disaster, such as hurricane irene, last august, we lost 1300 trees. we lose trees because of lack of adequate after care with the new tree planting. >> reporter: satellite imagery used to determine 17 of 20 cities studied lost tree cover and 16 saw increases. irene and lee are largely to blame. baltimore lost 2% of the canopy dug the studies 8-year period. twice the average for most cities analyzed. the biggest culprit around downtown, the baltimore grand prix, the new sustainability plan calls for doubling the tree canopy by 2037, meaning 8800 trees planted or given away starting in july. we will turn around any tree lot as we go forward. that's happening right now. tim williams, wjz 13, eye witness news. >> the fore

. >>> and our first warning weather coverage continues with meteorologist tim williams and bob turk, tracking these storms that are now moving our way. tim? >> we're going to take you back to earlier today. and take a look at the time stamp over my head here. this is early this morning when the first batch of these storms started to fire up. dynamic. very warm, moist air coming in from the south. that's the nice, calm air that we have been experiencing. the nice, comfortable temperatures. but it clashes right in the middle, where these storms start to kind of collide, where all of the air masses start to collide. the jet stream is the dividing factor between the cold and the very warm air. and that is exactly what is starting to spin these storms and what creates the tornadic activity. now, as we're watching the evening play out, we're still watching a lot of these storms firing up. right ahead of the front that is going to be pushing all of this in our general direction. what we have here are very deep colors. strong storms. expect it to continue into tonight. much of this energy is

first warning weather coverage continues with meteorologist tim williams and bob turk tracking the system. let's go straight to tim. >> you've heard the dynamic that creates these storms. let's point them out for you. this is the radar. you look at our clock here to take you back to these storms when the storms first started to break out. really around 8:00, 9:00. it's cold air, coming from the rockies. warm, moist air coming from the east side. that's the air we have been enjoying, without any of the severity. and a strong, low-level jet stream between the two that creates a very quick moving river of air that starts to spin with these storms. it creates a bit of a spin with the storms. the tornadoes start to spin out. tornadic activity starts to spin up. and this is what it looks like all day as the storms have been firing up. we take a look at the watches and warnings. as we have been talking about their tornado warnings, and this is the low driving it. all of the warm, moist air moving ahead. we expect it to lose most of the punch. we expect to see rain out of this. but all of this ve

meteorologist tim williams over in the first warning weather center. good afternoon. >> good afternoon, don. all the dense fog advisories were lifted early except for baltimore city, baltimore county, hart fond and anne arundel county lifted as of six minutes ago. they were extended because the fog would not break, so right now all the advisories are lifted, the sun is going to have to do its work and still a foggy start to the afternoon. temperatures in the 60s, 63 is the temperature at bwi marshal, 65 on the shore, 68 oakland. the dew point still high at 59, so there is still a lot of moisture around. even with the fog we are still two degrees -- only a two degree difference between this time today and yesterday. a little bit cooler today than yesterday. we will see a bit of a shift in the winds bringing in unseasonably warm and drier air at least for the time being. that will happen tomorrow, tonight into tomorrow and then we will look at rain moving in our direction. unfortunately, just in time to the weekend. those details in a few moments. >> the

meteorologist tim williams and bob turk are tracking the weather. >> we have been watching these system not unprecedented that we have these types of storms. but this is really pretty early. because. types of temperatures we have been dealing with. this is early this morning. around 8:00, is where we start to see the storms fire up. they have been moving to the northwest, to alabama. to the northwest, up toward kentucky and tennessee. they're continuing to move up. and the next batch, as you've already seen, is starting to fire up this afternoon through the heat of the day. the key here is, we do have this next round. and our live doppler radar shows that the low driving this is starting to move over toward indianapolis. and up toward the great lakes. all of that energy is moving up to the east. and this firing line right around louisville, back toward nashville, is all starting to kick in. these are very, very strong storms. the factors involved in this, well, the low pressure you see here. let's put it all in kind of a fashion here to give you an idea of how this all comes together. t
