but according to a new study at uc-berkeley, lane splitting is perfectly safe if it's done right. cbs reporter carter evans hits the busy highways to check it out. >> reporter: in most states motorcycle riders are required to stay in marked lanes like a car but in california riders are allowed to ride between lanes and speed between traffic. motorcyclists say it's safe when done with the same level of caution as regular motorcycle driving and now a new study says they're repeat. according to an analysis by uc- berkeley, if motorcyclists split lanes at speeds only slightly faster than the flow of traffic they are no more likely to have an accident than at any time. but if they drive more than 10 miles an hour faster than traffic the risk greatly increases. what in your eyes is a safe speed to split lanes? >> cars are doing 20, 25, 30 is okay. no higher. because at 30 miles an hour, by the time you hit the brake, you've already passed two cars. >> reporter: so those people splitting lanes at 60 miles an hour when the traffic is at a dead stop -- >> they're asking for it. >> reporter
