jessica orozco, a post-doc researcher at uc davis school of plant sciences, was curious. her team was already studying the impacts of heat and drought on nut orchards in the central valley. but as massive fires charred more than 4 million acres in california in 2020, she saw an opportunity to look deeper. we realized we had this long term data set where we could actually see the impact of the smoke. with data extracted from 467 walnut, almond and pistachio orchards in the valley, orozco's team looked at how smoke from the fires impacted those crops. we saw decreases in almond yields, so we were really surprised by how prolonged the effect was. the newly published study showed the smoke and ash blocked the light. trees require for photosynthesis that kept the trees from developing vital carbohydrates needed to generate blossoms following dormancy. the declines in yield were between 20 to 60%, depending on farms. the team discovered the impacts to the trees continued long after the smoke was gone. they can maybe grow slower, which will affect later on the performance of the
