and just the day before, passengers on this united flight faced similar turbulence. >> there was a guy in front of me actually who lifted up and hit the ceiling of the plane. >> reporter: the faa says the back-to-back scenarios are a coincidence. but two uk researchers think climate change will bring bumpier flights. they predict twice as many flights will hit turbulence by 2050 and it will be 10 to 40 times stronger than it is now. if that's true, pilots have their work cut out. >> like a roadway, right? you're on a nice day on a boat, right, and then all of a sudden a wave turns your world upside- down. >> reporter: this flight instructor says pilots rely on each other for warnings. he showed us how pilots handle the sudden shuddering. >> throttle back. >> reporter: slow down and keep the wings level. but it's not that easy. >> take into account the passengers in the back. you don't want to make -- sometimes there's nothing you can do. >> reporter: that flight instructor expects more passengers to use their seatbelts in flight. for now, until this story fades and we all have another

flight. cnn's rene marsh is on the story. >> reporter: in a split second, without warning, united airlines flightwith more than 100 people on board was violently tossed in mid air. >> there was a lot of screaming and a lot of hollering and things like that going on. >> reporter: the incident, so jarring, passengers say one woman hit the ceiling so hard, it cracked the panel above her head. severe turbulence rattleden on board the flight from denver to billings, montana, forcing the captain to declare a medical emergency. on cnn's "new day" another passenger described what it was like on board. >> in a split second, we were tilting to the far right, and plunging. it was just instantaneous, everything that everybody had in their hands were flying through the air. people were screaming. there was a lady behind me that was yelling "my baby, my baby," so i can just assume she had an infant in her arms and let go of it. we didn't hear anything over the intercom. we spent probably the next ten minutes or so handing items back to each other. my cell phone and my tablet ended up a couple rows ahead of me.

tonight, a united airlines flight attendant is in the hospital. she is one of several people injured in severe turbulence last night. flight 1676 was on its way from denver to billings, montana, when the boeing 737 dropped violently. one woman hit the ceiling so hard, a panel broke. the plane landed safely in billings. we got a fascinating report today on one of the president's top priorities. the congressional budget office looked at what would happen if the minimum wage was raised to $10.10. the report said that nearly 1 million people would be lifted from poverty. on the other hand, another half a million would lose their jobs altogether. nancy cordes is on capitol hill for us tonight. nancy. >> reporter: scott, republicans argued today this report from the nonpartisan congressional budget office is evidence that raising the minimum wage will lead to fewer jobs, something they say the economy just can't afford right now. democrats and the white house, on the other hand, chose to highlight some of the more favorable aspects of the report, like t

officials familiar with the warning say it applies to airlines that fly from overseas to the united states. flights at foreign airports that go directly to the u.s., passengers will see increased attention paid to their footwear. shoes that are worn and are carried in carry-on bags should be x-rayed, and it's urging airlines to use the swabs that check for traces of explosives on passengers' shoes as well. it will be a new spernks for many foreign flyers. >> this is a change. unlike passengers in the wraits who are used to taking their shoes off, in many airports overseas, that is not required. >> reporter: officials say threat information is not specific to any particular airline, country of origin, or time frame, and they say there's no indication of a specific plot, but airlines that fly from the middle east, north africa, and some parts of europe are being advised to be extra cautious. the idea of hiding explosives in shoes has been tried before by an englishman, richard reid, who attempted to blow up a flight from pair toys miami just before christmas in 2001. he had an explosive hidden in the
