virginia waters. captain fountain and into this 1856. november, authorities heard rumors there were the civil war fugitive --enslaved fugitives on his ship. so the mayor of norfolk took police officers, boarded the city of richmond, and started chopping up parts of the ship, looking to find secret compartments, in which enslaved people were hiding out. fortunately, captain fountain was able to assuage the norfolkies, and left fugitive people successfully hidden on board his ship. as another conductor on the undergroud railroad who regularly appears in william still's diary. nickname. is the referring to william bayless, a captain from delaware, who regularly travels throughout virginia's waterways, transporting people and cargoes from virginia to northern part. -- ports. was able tohe successfully transport dozens of fugitive slaves to freedom in the north, he did run into trouble. incidentthis represents a breakdown on the undergroud railroad. may of 1858, he was transporting five fugitive slaves hid

we are one virginia. these stories inspire me and i want you to know that your government is following and taking action to help people. awe are going to move even fasr in this new year when we met a year ago before anyone had even heard of covid-19, we met in a spirit of celebration. we celebrated new leadership and the first women to lead the house of delegates and to the speaker and at the president pro tem. [applause] together we embarked on a past that is more progressive and forward-looking than ever before. we took these steps because the voters sent us here to take action, so we did. we passed landmark clean energy legislation and the common sense gun safety measures. we raised the minimum wage and advanced important criminal justice reform such as raising the felony larceny threshold and ending the practice of taking away someone's driver's license because they couldn't pay their court fees. we took important steps forward with dignity and respect becoming the first southern state to ban discrimi

the virginia story is an amazing one. it brings together some of the most important figures in early american politics. opposing the constitution we have great revolutionary figures like patrick henry, richard henry lee, george mason, were opposing the constitution. supporting it was james madison the father of the constitution itself and the young john marshall. he would give influential speeches on behalf of the constitution including a defense , of judicial independence. the importance of the judiciary articlethe importance of the judiciary three, within our constitutional system. despite opposing views with someone like patrick henry, the firebrand, one of the most powerful figures in virginia, he even tried to deny james madison a seat in the senate and ran james monroe against him in the house. but john marshall is someone who was really easy to get along with. so, even despite political disagreements with patrick henry, he would maintain close relations with him. so we see this theme as we go through his career abo

unlike his contemporaries in virginia, even older generations, like patrick henry would think of virginia as his country. but john marshall thinks of the united states as his country. we get this amazing letter. and then we have different artifacts that talk to his time in the military. i want to focus on the one in the bottom corner. these are revolutionary war uniform buttons that were pulled from valley forge. if we think about john marshall's experience in the revolution, he was there in the brutal winters in valley forge, he was there with george washington and alexander hamilton. they felt firsthand the sacrifices of war, of fighting for your country. they also felt the inadequacies of the government at the time. government that could not keep them properly supplied, that relied too much on states to volunteer supplies and fight in the war. so they would emerge from this -- hamilton, washington, and marshall -- from this war, feeling they needed a stronger federal government, one that could undertake big tasks. this philosophical view would and up informing much of marshall's views
