in fact, the most strategic region at the time was in western pennsylvania, particularly at the forks which make the beginning around mark the beginning of the ohio river where the allegheny and the monongahela rivers meet to form the ohio. and there the french established a fort in 1754 called ft. duquesne, and the british colonials in virginia were very concerned about that. they would not easily tolerate that. virginia claimed boundaries stretching to the south sea based on its charter from the crown back in 1609. the virginians were very much expansionists. and leading men of virginia had already formed a land company which got british permission to colonize this area. and if a certain number of colonists could be situated there, let's say 100 families, that company, by right from the king, could receive a grant of up to 500,000 acres. so there was much at stake. it was not only in the interests of ordinary british colonials in colonies such as virginia that were at stake, but also the interests of a land company such as the ohio company that wanted to expand settlement and do so

we have this last disturbance up through western pennsylvania and once this comes through which willw not only will it really get the snow levels going up through the great lakes, that northwest wind really does, it but down here in d.c. and the mid-atlantic it's going to feel like it's in the teens and 20s from the wind and this fresh influx of cold air we're expecting during the day tomorrow. your high temperature tomorrow which should average around 43 degrees and we've been way above that this december and also through november, only 33 degrees tomorrow. you have to go back to february 9th to find a day as cold as tomorrow is projected to be. wednesday is not much better. it's 35 degrees. the good news is i don't think wednesday will be as windy. now thursday, here we. go this is a little more like it, average temperature 43. we'll be very close to it and by friday up to 47 degrees and into the weekend we think we can start improving on those temperatures, but cold tonight. we've seen colder. the breeze and the clouds are keeping the atmosphere mixed up a bit relatively speaking,

and accumulating snow tonight up through pennsylvania, the front itself just pushing into western pennsylvaniae in the 30s here, warmer than last night, but look at the cold air behind this front. it drops to 19 in columbus, 10 degrees in detroit, 6 degrees in chicago. so colder air will roll into town tomorrow. expect the cold friday. you don't have to worry about the morning rush hour tomorrow. i don't think there are any problems. tomorrow night rush hour should be fine, but tomorrow night around 10:00, 11:00, perhaps down to our south we think some snow and sleet is going to move into the region, maybe changing over to freezing rain in some spots and out ahead of that possibility some winter storm watches have been issued to our north and west. that would include you in hagerstown, frostburg, cumberland and martinsburg into charlestown. a winter storm watch is up there for the potential for some accumulating ice and maybe 1/4-inch or so. obviously that would be a travel concern. the good news is at least this is probably going to be mostly when people aren't on the road. we'll let you know
