that's the wilmington fire chief. he pulled me aside, tears in his eyes, confirmed he lost two firefighters today. others are still injured in the hospital. people that lived in the house i am told were able to get out, but firefighters went into the row home. the floor collapsed, a few firefighters were able to pull up out of it, and the firefighters that died were not. we were there earlier, a photographer, mark, was there as a body came out with a flag-draped over it, typical for firefighters killed in the line of duty. again, a tough day here. again, we understand the mayor of wilmington and others are at christiana hospital with other firefighters. we are awaiting a press briefing from the wilmington fire chief on camera. he had to pull himself together, get more details about what was happening. as soon as we get details, we'll bring them to you. again, fire representatives from all up and down the state of delaware here in wilmington now. again, two firefighters lost their lives serving the public. live in wilm

to follow breaking news out of wilmington, delaware. a devastating morning for that city's fire department. two firefighters are dead. a third is critically injured after an overnight house fire, this happened on the 1900 block of lake view road. that's where we find jeff chirico who joins us live with the very latest, jeff? >> reporter: brian a quiet and somber scene out here this morning, neighbors and firefighters stunned and saddened by the news we're waking up to this morning. right now you can see the burned out buildings behind us. this fire started at 3:00 a.m., heavy flames and smoke were pouring out of the home on the 1900 block of lake view street when firefighters arrived. they found that smoke and heavy flames despite that went inside while trying to rescue several children and an adult, the floor beneath them collapsed. two firefighters were rescued and taken to the hospital. one body of a firefighter was dug from the rubble. he was then carried out by firefighters draped in a flag. those two firefighters at the hospital,

nbc 10's monique braxton is live in wilmington. monique, another tough die for the firefighting community. >> reporter: that's right, vai. i can tell you that not a lot of words were spoken. we did see a lot of embracing as the firefighters began the painful week of saying goodbye to two of their own. a moving tribute. firefighters standing at attention as the draped coffin of lieutenant christopher leach is carried to an hearse. these emergency responders and police officers from surrounding cities are also here to comfort wilmington's men and women in blue. we saw hugs and tears as these public servants grieved for their fallen brothers. a short time later, senior firefighter jerry fickas is saluted as his coffin is brought to an hearse. both died after the floor collapsed while they were battling a blaze here on lake view road early saturday morning. a family of six escaped intense flames, but the firefighters didn't know it. two of their colleagues are in critical but stable condition. two others were treated for their injuries

and somber day here in wilmington. we're right outside saint elizabeth roman catholic church in wilmington where a funeral will be held for second fire fighter who died, who will be laid to rest, hundreds will be paying their respects to the family of lieutenant christopher leach during a 10:00 a.m. viewing at saint elizabeth followed by funeral mass at noon, 41 year-old lieutenant leach and 51 year-old senior fire fighter jerry fickes, junior died, two other fire fighters were seriously hurt when a floor collapsed as they were battling a a fire on lake view road in the city of wilmington. a fire that has been ruled as arson as you just heard. now last night senior fire fighters fickes was honored by family, friend, colleagues during a viewing for him. fire fighters from all over told us why they felt compelled to be there in a risk they face every day. >> amazing young man, his dynamic would do just about anything you asked him to do. he was a family man. he loved his family. he loved the fire department. >> it is a v

the grief grips the city of wilmington.flags are flying at half-staff here, draped bunting symbolizing the sadness felt. we were at a local high school when mourners prayed and held each other close. many lifelong friends of the two firefighters who perished. 41-year-old lieutenant chris leach and 51-year-old jerry fickes. vice president joe biden visited the fire scene as did delaware senator chris coons. >> they're superheroes, both of them were fantastic firefighters, they loved their community. >> firefighters trapped. >> reporter: investigators tell us smoke detectors woke up a woman and five children here on lakeview road. firefighters rushed in not knowing everyone had escaped. the floor collapsed under the intense heat and flames. a handful of firefighters were trapped. once again, two firefighters who did survive are in the burn unit here at crozer-chester, two others have been treated and released. we are waiting word now on the funeral arrangements of those two who died. live for now outside the hospital, monique
